SF Mime Troupe this weekend

September brings us the annual visit from political provocateurs, the San Francisco Mime Troupe. Their shows are always poignant, professional, hilarious and free.

This year’s production is an original musical titled Posibilidad, or Death of the Worker. As a factory shuts down and robs the workers of their pay and pension to fulfill promised dividends, a pregnant worker accidentally instigates a strike. Bring a picnic, lowback chairs and a few bucks for when they pass the hat.

Facebook giveaway for 94.7 Smashing Pumpkins gig

Radio 94.7 emails:

RADIO 94.7 welcomes Smashing Pumpkins in concert on Monday, September 6th at the Crest Theater.
Before the show, Billy Corgan and band will visit the RADIO 94.7 Video Lounge for an extremely intimate plugged in set that only a very few select fans will see!
RADIO 94.7 is using Sacramento’s fastest growing Facebook page to giveaway the spots in the lounge, where you’ll be so close, you’ll be able to put your drink on Billy’s amp!

Because Billy Corgan definitely seems like the kind of guy who loves when his fans get up close like that. To win this chance to see the Pumpkins, you have to do some Facebooky stuff on Facebook. Details here.

Nirvana: Live! Tonight! Free!

Negative Creeps
Twenty years ago, Jerry Perry hosted a young, mostly unknown band named Nirvana at the Cattle Club. This was on the Bleach tour, before Nevermind and Smells Like Teen Spirit drove a nail or two into the coffin of 80’s hair metal, brought punk rock guitar to the forefront of popular music and made most people forget that Use Your Illusions was supposed to be the album that changed rock & roll that year. Luckily, he filmed it.

Mr. Lobo tapes live today!

Sacramento’s two best kept film secrets activate their Wonder Twin powers tonight to bring you some awesomely campy horror.

Movies on a Big Screen welcomes Mr. Lobo and his weekly show Cinema Insomnia, which is syndicated throughout the US but (sadly) not broadcast locally. Mr. Lobo provides hilarious commentary and insight to misunderstood and under-appreciated gems from late night film vaults.

Tonight’s feature is The Undertaker and His Pals, a macabre tale of motorcycle riding psychopaths, groovy chicks turned into lunchmeat, and acid-fu. Be there and be square.

Where was I? Hella hard to find

Where am I? These guys are hella tight.
Why do I have craving for a high quality meal at a competitive price?

This story about the UC Davis physics undergraduate trying get the word “hella” to be accepted as a unit of measure, distance, etc. is quite entertaining. The comments of course are choice. Is he the smartest dude ever? Or, is he totally stupid? Such a lame debate. Whatever.

Oh, speaking of, did anyone ever use the word “moded” when someone was embarrassed or insulted? You got moded! Just curious if that was specific to my junior high or what.

Local Bands Play Beach Boys

The original B Boys, yo
Some of my favorite local shows in recent years are part of the “tribute” series Jerry Perry has been putting on at Old Ironsides. Not only do you get to see classic acts such as David Bowie and The Clash reinterpreted by local artists, but the scene is always a who’s who of Sacramento musicians, largely because half of them are playing that night. On Saturday, you can join in the madness at the Beach Boys Tribute Show. Acts will include Aaron King, Adrian Bourgeois, Baby Grand, David Houston, Dog Party, The Free Badge Serenaders, I Scream On Sundae, Jackson Griffith, Jem & Scout, Justin Davis, Ol’ Cotton Dreary, On Display, The Only Men and SAUCER. Be on the lookout for crazy harmonies and some seriously punked out surf tunes. I hope someone brings a theremin!

PETA convergence today

According to a media alert issued by PETA, members of the animal rights organization will gather at the intersection of K and 7th streets in Sacramento today at noon.

Prior to the arrival of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in Sacramento, PETA members will gather at a busy intersection and show the public pictures of still-nursing baby elephants being captured rodeo-style and dragged away from their mothers. The compelling photos, which were taken by a veteran elephant handler inside Ringling’s Florida training center, also show how baby elephants are stretched out, slammed to the ground, gouged with steel-tipped bullhooks, and shocked with electric prods. These abusive sessions go on for several hours a day for up to a year—often as the helpless, chained mother elephants look on.

Check out the photos and judge for yourself. I’m no fan of the circus anyway, but I am sure there are two heated sides to this issue.

Giveaway: State Fair Care Package

We have just received a complimentary “Fair Care Package” from the folks at Chevrolet in California and would like to offer it up to one lucky reader. The package includes four general admission tickets, ride tickets, fair necessities, and some Chevrolet goodies. With this deal, you have the opportunity to stop by the Chevrolet test drive track for a VIP ride in a new Camaro, Equinox, or Malibu.

The fair ends on Sunday, August 1st, so we’ll have to end this contest tonight at midnight (Monday, July 26th) to make sure we get the package out to you. To enter, tell us why you love Sacramento and we’ll choose the one we like the best. Simple enough, right?

UPDATE (07/27/10): We have a winner! Thanks for playing, everyone. People love them some Sacramento.
