Attention “Reno 911!” fans

Reno 911
Dangle takes down Big Mike

Starting tonight at 2:00 a.m., CW31 will begin airing reruns of “Reno 911!,” the Comedy Central mockumentary-style show about Reno’s bumbling and offensive fictional sheriffs, starting with the show’s pilot episode from 2003. Reruns don’t currently seem to be airing on Comedy Central, so that’s a pretty good deal right there if you’re looking for some fun comedy viewing to tide you over until fall TV starts. Happy Admission Day Weekend

157 years ago, on Sep 9, 1850, California was admitted to the Union as the 31st state.  In order to celebrate this great day, there was a somewhat understated presentation at the Capitol including a barbershop quartet and a color guard.  Maybe it’s just my Calicentric viewpoint, but I think is a day that we should celebrate with a little more oomph.  There should be fireworks and parades and lots and lots of drinking.  In fact, this is a day that we, as Californians, should reflect on the greatness that is our state, and how fortunate the other 49 states are to have us.

I mean, think about it.  California provides 60% of the fresh produce, 35% of the commercial lumber, 68% of the wine, 90% of the movies, 80% of the attractive people, and 100% of the “California Cuisine” in America.  (all of these stats are made up, and therefore, totally true)  We need to celebrate all that is California this weekend.  Fly your Bear Flag in front of your house.  Shout “Eureka” a lot.  And don’t ever forget that you live in the greatest state in the greatest country in the world.

Other Directional (or lack thereof) Designations

So, you’re driving on Elvas from Folsom Boulevard and you’re trying to get on to Fair Oaks Boulevard (it’s “Sacramento’s Rodeo Drive” don’t you know, but that’s another post) and you notice a sign indicating that you can go to the right and get on to Fair Oaks Boulevard, or you can go straight and reach the “Central District.”  What is this “Central District” to which the sign alludes?  And when was anything close to Elvas ever considered “Central?”

Are we “Silicon Valley East”?

Sacramento is known as “Silicon Valley East” because of the large number of computer and high-tech companies that have moved to, or established a facility in, the greater Sacramento metropolitan area.

By whom? I don’t mean to disparage our tech sector, but has anybody actually heard that appellation used before? Also wouldn’t East be a bit too specific, considering we are just a few clicks East of San Jose? I think North would be better. Not sure what Redmond, Washington would think about that, though…

Thank You Note to the Sacramento Bee

ScoopyHere at the ‘Rag, we are quick to take shots at the Bee, but sometimes slow to give credit where credit is due.  So please allow me to take this opportunity to thank the Bee.  For what, you ask?  For having the good taste to pick my name in their drawing for free “Gold Circle” tickets to the Weird Al show.  That’s right, Mrs. Eats and I were right up front for the glory that is Weird Al Yankovic.  Thank you to Scoopy and all the folks at the number one news source in Sacramento.

The concert was, to put it mildly, badass.  Weird Al went for almost 2 1/2 hours, covering recent hits, old favorites and everything in between.  Sitting next to us were two kids, neither more than 9 years old, who told us that this was their first rock concert.  The Mrs. and I were very excited to explain to the kids how things work, like the fact that “rock” concerts don’t always start on time.  Thirty years from now, these men will be talking about how their first concert ever was Weird Al, and I hope they think fondly of “super cool” old people that sat next to them and showed them the ropes.

By the way, we managed to get out of the fair mere minutes before they broke out the riot gear.  Thanks Bee.

The Mandarin

The MandarinThe Mandarin has been a family staple for me since before I could pronounce “chowmein.”  The thing about having a “family” restaurant that you grow up with is that you tend to judge all similar restaurants by it.  And here’s the thing, in all my travels, I haven’t found a better Chinese restaurant, period.

Why only three and a half stars then?  Because, I have a sneaking suspicion that the food at The Mandarin is not what any respectable person from Asia would call “authentic.”  Nevertheless, what The Mandarin does, they ‘does well.  In all my years I’ve never had better sizzling rice soup or General’s Chicken or Hunan string beans.  This is “blue-eyed” Chinese fare to be sure, but it’s the best “blue-eyed” Chinese food in town.
