The keys for restaurants to succeed

Help me out, folks. I read this article on kcra.com about downtown Sacramento Restaurants fighting to stay open, you know, because of the economy.

Or is there another reason?

Over the past couple of weeks, several downtown restaurants have shut their doors for different reasons. Table 260, Danielle’s Creperie and Fog Mountain Cafe recently closed….”The economy has really impacted folks, from furlough Fridays to reduction in the work force,” said Downtown Sacramento Partnership executive director Michael Ault. Ault said despite restuarants closing others are opening in their place.

How has it impacted folks outside of them not having enough cash to eat out?

He said the keys for restaurants to succeed are to offer a unquie product, know how to market your resturant and provide good customer service. (that’s a cut and paste, folks, enjoy the typos…)

So, did Table 260, Danielle’s Creperie, and Fog Mountain Cafe close because of the economy, or because they didn’t offer an unique product, or know how to market their restaurant, or provide good customer service?

Police clean up makeshift homeless shelter

Earlier this week, I witnessed law enforcement removing folks who were living under Interstate 5 along the Garden Highway. Since I ride by this area every morning I have been tracking the growth of this tent city wondering how they are created and ultimately removed. They gathered quite a pile of belongings and trash which was gone the next day.

Then this morning I read this article about police returning to Discovery Park in wake of rape and I wonder if there is a connection.

The woman was at the park for a company barbeque when she was attacked about 8 p.m. Wednesday. She walked into the restroom at the park near the Garden Highway and Truxel Road when she was grabbed and sexually attacked, police said.

Anyone know how makeshift homeless shelters are allowed/removed? Makes you wonder where the folks end up once they are pushed out of an area like this.

Band Tesla ft. Nick Toma

So what’s up with Band Tesla threatening to cancel their appearance at the Kings rally because of Don Geronimo? and Where is Nick Toma from Good Day Sacramento?

Don said he was broadcasting his show live from the Kings rally at Cesar Chavez Park in Sacramento when local band Tesla, who was scheduled to perform at the rally, was on stage getting ready. Don, who’s known for his crude and often biting humor, saw the band from across the park and commented on air that Brian Wheat, Tesla’s bassist, who has long hair and was wearing a Chicago Blackhawks jersey, looked like Garth from Wayne’s World.

How crude…and biting.

And now Nick Toma goes missing and has two, count them two, Facebook pages created in his honor?

i asked this on their page and they deleted it. there is something going on. they said he was on vacation and then off and then he was just gone. with a generic post as to “he is no longer with the company and is pursuing other options” yada yada yada i have not watched their show since that day…

I say Don is behind this what with his new three-year deal at KHTK and job as program director and all, not to mention his addition to the Good Day Sacramento lineup.

Next thing you know, Don will be opening restaurants with Mark S. Allen.

Sexual wellness sees growth

Senor Butthead
He said "growth"

Times are tough, the fit is hitting the shan everywhere we look. I say it’s time to have us some fun. With that I present to you this little gem from kcra.com (thanks, David Bienick!) …

At least three major drugstore chains in the Sacramento area have begun selling personal massage devices, also known as vibrators…”The sexual wellness category has seen considerable growth in retail pharmacies due in large part to the comfortable setting and tasteful, responsible merchandising,” Vergara wrote in an email to KCRA 3. “Also, many consumers may feel more secure purchasing this type of product from a trusted, health-focused retailer.”

Good luck carrying one of these things around in your wallet.

America is again hungry for a good steak

From the Sacramento Business Journal

So it’s been a tough climb back for Florin Towne Centre – as well as shopping centers old and new throughout the region – but deals are gradually trickling in. The latest lease for Florin Towne Centre is a Sizzler restaurant, which a couple weeks ago committed to taking a pad space between Starbucks and the building that houses Verizon and U.S. Bank.

I really have no idea what makes a restaurant chain successful. Just when you think you’ve found one you like and is always busy, it shuts its doors.

The Florin Sizzler, which will employ 100 to 120 workers, will be one of the first locations built with Sizzler’s latest design. Sizzler’s corporate office announced this week that it is starting to expand again with corporate-owned and franchisee-owned locations, and will soon open its first new restaurant in more than three years. “America is again hungry for a good steak,” is how the eatery’s promotional materials put it.

Can’t wait for Sac-eats’s review (the new old school says “s’s” by the way).

Jason Williams retires (again)

I am just now catching up on the news and noticed that former Kings point guard Jason Williams announced his retirement last week.

The 6-foot-1 guard finished with career averages of 10.5 points and 5.9 assists. He is the Grizzlies’ all-time leader in assists with 2,069…Williams played for the Grizzlies twice and played for the Sacramento Kings, the Miami Heat and the Magic. He was the starting point guard on the Heat’s championship team in 2005-2006.

Those were the days. Here’s a cool video of the glory years on YouTube. Oh, and that the elbow pass, and more.

When is the last time you thought of Lawrence Funderburke?

It’s like that moment

So, you're getting a burning sensation when you urinate?
So you're getting a burning sensation when you urinate?

Back in 2007, CoolDMZ wrote this post about the rate of sexually transmitted diseases in Sac county. Well, it’s 2011 now and apparently Sacramento hasn’t lost that loving feeling.

“ALARMING” is how Chief Public Health Officer Glennah Trochet describes the STD problem in Sacramento. In fact, it’s so bad the county received $30,000 from a national organization to promote STD testing.

It’s good to see Glennah still has her job. Or is it “Glenna”?

“They really don’t care about protection now days,” Raquel Perez is 16 and she tells a familiar story. “It’s like that moment, they don’t really think about it; so they just like forget about it and at the end they end up suffering the consequences.”

They sure do, Raquel, they sure do.

Kings receive a deadline extension

This is some saga.

NBA Commissioner David Stern reported Friday that the league has decided to extend until May 2 the deadline for the Sacramento Kings to produce an application to relocate to Anaheim. Stern said the NBA Board of Governors’ relocation committee, headed by Oklahoma City owner Clay Bennett, will explore claims by Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson that he’s mobilized millions of dollars in community support to sponsor the team and purchase season tickets.

What? No love for Carmichael Dave?

Parting is such sweet sorrow, even in cow towns

…this is how an article about the pending Kings move begins at latimes.com. Sigh.

This article does bring up some interesting points, however.

Time Warner’s new $3-billion Lakers TV deal reportedly has a third-team clause, reducing it by $250 million.

Twist!

Does someone think Buss will watch $250 million fly away because someone set up a lemonade stand in Orange County, then say, “I’d be glad to kick in an extra $5 million to $10 million annually?” When the looming lockout complicated New Orleans’ sale, Commissioner David Stern swooped down, bought the Hornets and put talks on hold.

And Stern can’t sell the Hornets to save his life.

Here’s another interesting article from the Orange County Register… Continue reading “Parting is such sweet sorrow, even in cow towns”
