Right Awn! Friday: Sticking to their guns

Happy Cesar Chavez Day!

It’s interesting that Right Awn! Friday falls on the same day as the one that commemorates Cesar Chavez. This is a person who exemplifies what Right Awn! is about – not just a shout out (usually), but a recognition of the “little guy” who tries to make a difference.

Along that vein, this week’s Right Awn! comes from Sac Rag contributor RunnerGirl (the future Mrs. sac-eats, yes yes we get it). Thanks for the tip RunnerGirl…

Attack of the killer turkeys

Sacramento, and northern California in general, has a unique relationship with its farm animals. Yeah, I said it. Be it chickens, cows or pigs, we seem to have an interaction with these species that is all our own.

For example, take this story:

Foy said his office has received many calls about wild turkeys from Sacramento to Fairfield. He said it is currently mating season for the birds.

Those damned free lovin turkeys. You woulda thought we solved the problem last November. I guess we didn’t get them all.

Newsflash: Cars crash into Sac buildings (yawn)

This time, it was a three-fer, as a car and two cop cars hit a house:

“I was sleeping nice and sound and warm and I thought, ‘Oh this must be one of those California earthquakes, but I heard the sirens and you don’t ever hear the sirens in the house so I got up, checked the dog, saw the lights, I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh,'” resident Robert Ashcroft said.

No, Mr. Ashcroft, not one of those California earthquakes. It was one of those Sacramento-drivers-driving-into-a-building things.

UPDATE: I missed this story too. Keep an eye out for flying Lexusesses, people.

Right Awn! Friday: Feeding the need

rightawn.jpg

This week, I’d like to give a personal shout-out for Right Awn! Friday. Why? Because I can. And why else? Because there are so many angles to this admittedly short story, that perhaps is worth exploring.
I will leave it to you to explore, but here’s a thought…

Do smokers get a bad rap? Always a debatable issue…

Right Awn! Friday: Seeing green

rightawngreen.JPG

Today, we’re bringing you a double whammy (RIP with big bucks, Peter Tomarken), because not only is it Right Awn! Friday, but it’s St. Patrick’s Day too. And, not only do both bring us great joy this Friday, but both also give us reason to see green.

So, here’s a little story to tell your buddies at the bar, while you’re partaking of St. Patty’s Day festivities

Right Awn! Friday: Get your paws off me!

rightawn.jpg

This week Right Awn! Friday would like to remind you all to be careful out there. There are a lot of scams floating around. People get you coming and they get you going.

But, before I continue, here’s another shoutout to MyMotherLode.com, which is quickly becoming a Sac Rag favorite.

After all, they brought us this story…

Bowling for Sactobine

A few months ago, RonTopofIt reported on the state of bowling in Sacramento. He was right, it’s not your pop’s bowling alley anymore.

Last weekend, I partook of a little three-hole roundball over at AMF’s Landpark Lanes – the closest bowling alley we could find near Elk Grove (a town that seems only good for big box shopping and big box eating). Our group spent the better part of an hour in a post Macaroni Grill-induced haze trying to find the place.

Right Awn! Friday: Can you hear me… NOW?

rightawn.jpg

After a brief hiatus last week, Right Awn! Friday is back, jack. The Right Awn! steering commitee was hard pressed to find any thing to write awn last week, and we were worried that maybe we were losing steam.

But fear not, because Sacramento never disappoints, and came up big this week. We had the old prospector who removed little Buddha heads from the American River, and then got himself arrested. Then, we had little Josephine Kao, who took first in the California Central Valley Spelling Bee competition, and now is going to the nationals in DC. Good on both of them!

While they were certainly Right Awn! worthy, another candidate emerged and took the props, just on sheer dollar value. Please set your phones on vibrate, and find out who takes the honor this week…
