A flood of attention

As most of us have heard, Arnold the Governor has been lobbying in DC to get some federal support for our flood control system:

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff will visit California to get a first-hand look at the state’s levee system, Gov. Schwarzenegger announced.

Of course, Chertoff wouldn’t commit to a specific time to visit the soggy state. I heard he’s waiting for better weather, because, you know, it’s not worth surveying our flood control systems while we’re being threatened with, like, flooding.

In other flood-related news, the Sacramento Business Journal and the Sacramento Metro Chamber of Commerce are holding a holy-crap-what’ll-happen-if-it-floods breakfast (at $50 a pop but $40 if you register before March 8) at the Hyatt Regency on March 15. We may drown, but not without making sure we’ve partaken of the most important meal of the day.

More CBS13 squawking…

CBS13’s newsgathering/presentation has been a frequent topic of converation here on the Sac Rag (so much so that I think they should have their own category). The ability of these people to present news is unparalleled, and not in a good way. Check out these Pulitzer Prize-quality articles on their website, for example:

Chaos At Sacramento Bar After Shooting

Or:

HIV-AIDS Patient Information Stolen In Sacramento

Thanks, CBS13. More and more, I’m impressed with your online journalistic prowess. You just might be the worst in local news, and that’s saying a lot.

Right Awn! Friday: “Reddish” is the new rust

rightawn.jpg

Much like LL Cool J, Right Awn! Friday has become something like a phenomenon. And you know what else? Like P.Diddy back when he was Puff Daddy, we won’t stop because, indeed, we can’t stop.

We’ve weathered the storm, fellow Raggers, and we’re pressing on because gosh darn it, Sacramento, you’ve done good!

Now, unlike R. Kelly, take your keys out of the ignition, and find out who gets the big shout out this week…

Right Awn Friday!: California, the winter wonderland

rightawn.jpg

Damn, Gina! It’s Right Awn Friday! time!

As always, Sac has had an interesting week this week. From kids suing to graduate high school (um, you ever heard of studying?) to people getting stuck in hours of traffic to motivate themselves (don’t these last two items seem related?), there’ve been a few things to write about.

And let’s not forget the weather. How clearly can we see, now that the rain is gone? Sunny, warm and comfortable…exactly for what California is known, which is kind of ironic in a way.

Find out why, by strapping on your skis and making the jump…

Yes, it’s another list…

I’m back with another “Top something something” list. What, you’d rather I write about me?

Nationwide Homes Network just released their Top 100 Places to Live for 2005 list:

Residents, past or former, nominate their cities for possessing such qualities as a place’s serenity, beauty, low crime rates, safety for children, employment opportunties and cultural activities.

Inclusion in the top 100 gives “communities a sense of pride and accomplishment,” says Steve Nickerson, CEO and President of HomeRoute.

Sorry, Sacramento didn’t make the cut. We are obviously not a community with a sense of pride and accomplishment. But hey, Roseville made it, so we kinda got that going for us.

But then again, given the qualities that this list supposedly uses as criteria, how did Vacaville make this list?

Right Awn Friday!: Sacramento Idols

rightawn.jpg

Is it just me, or did this week go FAST? It’s time once again for Right Awn Friday!

There’s been a lot of negativity in the news this week. It seems like the new year has brought us a lot of crime and controversy. However, let us not forget those people in this city who are trying to use their limited resources, ambition, and even more limited talent to make a difference in the world.

So who will get the shout out this week? Get your Right Awn fists ready, and find out right after this break…
