Seeking the Sikhs in the River City

Last weekend, the Sikhs of Yuba City held their annual festival and parade, commemorating the installation of their holy book (the Guru Granth Sahib) as their spiritual guide. This was a record setting event, as the celebration drew a crowd of 60,000 people from several countries.

As unfamiliar as Sikhs are to the average American, the presence of such a large Sikh community in Sacramento and the Central Valley is actually a unique characteristic of this area. Northern California is no stranger to Sikhs by any means. The area is known to Sikhs around the world for being a hub for the community in North America. Almost every Sikh has a relative or close friend living in this area, which has one of the largest Sikh populations in the United States – comparable to and quite likely exceeding New York or Los Angeles. So, who are the Sikhs? Since you didn’t ask, I’m going to tell you…

Why Pink Floyd will live forever

We’ve all heard about the story of the drama teacher who was fired from the Catholic school where she taught, because of her pre-employment work at a family planning clinic.

What do I find interesting about the story?

The student whose mother first complained about Bain was expelled from Loretto after launching what school officials characterize as a public attack against the school on her personal website.

Man, firing the teacher and kicking out the student. Loretto administrators, you’re gonna run out of bricks for that wall at this rate!

But, I’ll tell you what I find even more interesting…

The Second Coming

This town really has a love-hate relationship with Wal-Mart, but maybe, that’s because there’s stuff to love, but other stuff to hate about the place.

I’ll tell you one thing, you have to give the ‘mart props for giving us reason to hope that the mallsore called Florin Mall gets razed to the ground. A new Wal-Mart supercenter can only be an improvement to the area. Plus, it makes it more convenient for people who do their banking at all the pawn shops over there.

Rancho Cordova is rated NC-17.

A while back, Mrs. TopofIt observed how common it was to see kids in public places during school hours.

Well, my blogger-in-law, your voice was heard through the Sac Rag megaphone, and the powers-that-be have listened. Rancho Cordova is thinking about locking all kids down during school hours.

But, I wonder if the cops should also be locking down the adults in Rancho as well, although for other reasons than you think…

Remember how we said “You heard it here first”?

I’m sure you do. If you don’t remember, pay attention: You heard it here first.

RonTopofIt has been keeping us all up to date on this missing woman, and commented on the fact that there seems to be disparities in the attention that some missing persons get over others.

Two whole weeks later, KCRA finally picked up on the disparity issue. Too late though KCRA, you’ve been scooped by almighty Rag of Sac. What exactly are you doing during work?

I don’t get it.

A day after this hit the headlines, KCRA reports about this in Elk Grove.

Under a plea agreement, the attempted murder charges were dropped, and Howard pleaded guilty to the child endangerment charges.

Does this rub you the wrong way at all? It shouldn’t because, you know, strangling and setting fire to your children isn’t really attempted murder.

It really doesn’t make any sense, but hey, thanks for getting to the bottom of that one, KCRA!

No wonder we’re known as bad drivers.

I found this piece from today’s Sac Bee extremely disturbing. Who the hell blogs from their car while racing a train?

While on the one hand I can appreciate the fact that the writer is one bad-ax-muther-trucker for being able to blog while he’s fighting the maniacs on Highway 50, to blog while driving is maniacal as well. Who authorized that story anyway? No wonder Sacramento has such a bad reputation when it comes to driving ability, or really, with anything to do with a motor vehicle.

This story will only promote bad habits on the road. I DEMAND that the Sac Bee publish a retraction to this story. They should also publicly hail the Sac Rag as the most trusted name in fair and balanced reporting in Sacramento in a full page ad in the Lifestyle section. WHO’S WITH ME?
