Reminder: Survivor tryouts tomorrow

Those of you with free time tomorrow (Thursday, July 15th) may be interested in heading out to Thunder Valley Casino to audition for the next season of “Survivor” which will be held in Nicaraqua.

“This is no picnic. If they want to last on ‘Survivor,’ they have to be able to survive the Sacramento heat,” Elmets said.

Good one. I can’t believe this show has been on for years and still only offers up one million to the winner. Perhaps this will pave the way for Sacramento (Wow!) to host an American Idol audition (An official resolution? Double Wow!).

Zombie Jamboree

Braaaiiiinssss

In celebration of Trash Film Orgy‘s 10th Anniversary, an attempt will be made to break the world record for the largest zombie walk (current official record = 4,026). More details will be coming to their website, but the parade will be Saturday, July 10 from 7-9pm starting at Sub-Q. To get prepared, there are plenty of sources for advice and inspiration on perfecting your undead look. One great spot uses the Socratic method to help you fill out your story (Were you buried underground? Have you eaten yet?) and eHow has a fifteen part video series that provides step-by-step instruction.

Far at Daytrotter Studios

Another Sacramento band graces the Daytrotter Studio, this time the recently reconstituted ’90s proto-emo band Far, led by Jonah Matranga. From the trippy-dippy (in a good way) intro by Daytrotter’s Sean Moller:

… [T]he band builds itself around very intense and very serious thoughts of when we’re living and when we’re doing something less than living. It could refer to dying, but more often than not, in listening to the words that Matranga pens, we get the feeling that being dead and dying don’t carry all of that permanence. These just happen to be conditions – no less serious – but situations that can be fixed if the winds and minds are right.

Vacationing on the cheap

A little Ford’s Real Hamburgers shout out on Friday (actually, she credits roadfood.com, which is a great site, btw…Hello, Marie’s Do-Nut Shop!) on Fox 40 Morning News when Paul Robins interviewed Amy from “On the go with Amy,” a mother of two who blogs about vacationing on $150 – $200 a day. She offers up some great ideas on making it work including finding activities that are free or inexpensive (walking across the Sundial Bridge in Redding, visiting the Oregon Vortex where balls roll uphill, and strolling through the zoo in Portland). This trip takes them from San Francisco to Seattle.

I discovered a little travel trick of my own recently. When renting a car, try agencies located outside of the airport. If you’re traveling light enough, the cab or shuttle fare is well worth the hassle. I was able to cut $150 off the same reservation at an agency 5 miles from the airport (the same agency, mind you). Fewer taxes, too.

Watch the clip after the jump… Continue reading “Vacationing on the cheap”

Jubilee Highlights

This year’s Jubilee was a rousing success. Great weather, huge crowds, and incredible music.
Every year there seems to be some old song that everybody plays; this year it was “I Would Do Anything For You.” Also each year there’s a band that knocks me on my ass; this year it was the New Orleans Ale Stars who knew how to milk an old Dixieland standard for all it was worth. And every year there are myriad “Jubilee moments” that make the whole thing worthwhile; this year my favorite such moment was Ralph Reynolds of the Reynolds Brothers getting a young boy so excited about playing the washboard that the poor tyke got a nosebleed. Don’t let anyone tell you that jazz isn’t dangerous.

First Jubilee Set

First set of Jubilee found festival emperor Bob Draga playing with Sacramento 32 year old wunderkind Jason Wanner. Not exactly the most exciting gig bit not bad for a Friday afternoon warm up.
But the set I’m at now is rocking. The band: Coronet Chop Suey. Check them out if you get a chance.

Sac-Eats Will be Live-Blogging From the Jubilee!

I’m not sure what “live-blogging” actually is. So I may not be doing it right. Is it just having conversations with people face-to-face? Because if that’s the case, then that’s just “talking.” Seems like you don’t need a two-word techno phrase to describe that.

Anyway, I’ll be updating this here blog with my favorite acts, favorite eats, and favorite old-ladies-with-flapper-dresses-and-parasols throughout the weekend, so be sure to check back for up to date Jubilee info.

Here’s tip number #1, if you’re not jazzed out by 10pm any night this weekend, check out Bill Dendle and Eddie Erickson on the Delta King. They’re heroes of mine and fantastic musicians and hilarious entertainers and generous benefactors to animal rescue charities and beings whose mere presence can make the sun rise and set and Capricorns.  Check ’em out.
