Here’s a interesting fun post from statehornet.com about the only college water pong club in existence.

“I learned of the actual sport of water pong while attending an event put on by Sacramento Pong Circuit almost two years ago. At this event, and all future events that I attended, cups placed at opposing sides of a table were all filled with water and none were consumed, rather, they were simply moved to the side,” Scandone said. “That is not to say that I had not been aware of other, more dangerous sides, of where the sport came from since high school.”

This story has a The Onion quality to it, huh? Keep reading…

This is why Scandone included language in the club’s constitution discouraging members from involving themselves in alcohol drinking games, citing risk factors such as the heightened risk of transmitting the herpes simplex 1 virus. This virus causes cold sores, and cases have jumped 230 percent since 2007 in beer pong players aged 17 to 21.

Yikes. Alrighty then. At this point, I think I’ll take the hangover.

The devil is in the gay details

Geraldo Rivera , right?

Interesting reporting of this story by KCRA and the San Diego Gay and Lesbian News. I know, I know, if we compare KCRA to the SDGLN one more time, but nevertheless, hear me out.

From KCRA.com:

A former porn star was convicted by a jury Wednesday of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon and other violent charges, the Sacramento District Attorney’s Office announced. He was convicted for punching his ex-girlfriend repeatedly and slamming a lid of a toilet tank on her head, the district attorney’s office said. Marc Anthony Donais, also a former model, committed the crime in 2009 after confronting his former girlfriend about his suspicions of cheating, the attorney’s office said.

From SDGLN.com:

Gay porn star Ryan Idol, aka Marc Anthony Donais, was convicted of attempted murder on Tuesday by a Sacramento Superior Court jury. Donais, 45, was accused of using a toilet tank lid to batter his ex-girlfriend in the head in an attack at the woman’s home on Sept. 5, 2009. The adult film star, who identifies as bisexual although he performed in gay porn, and the woman had broken up before the incident. During the trial, Donais testified that he thought his ex-girlfriend had a knife when they were in the bathroom, where she was taking a bath. He said he hit the woman in self-defense. Jurors, however, didn’t buy his argument.

Interesting clarification of Mr. Idol’s occupation, huh? At the Sac Rag, we often want to write about topics that may not be directly related to Sacramento, so we force (make up) an association just to “qualify” it for print. Do you think this is what the SDGLN is doing? Or, did KCRA omit this clarification of the type of work Mr. Idol did intentionally because they think their audience would be offended?

CAKE performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live

CAKE performed four songs on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night. Watch all four together here along with a little commentary about the band.

You couldn’t escape from Cake on Jimmy Kimmel’s show last night (Sept. 14). The Sacramento band played four songs on the vast outdoor stage the show sometimes uses, including three cuts (“Sick of You,” “Mustache Man (Wasted),” and “Long Time”) from the current Showroom of Compassion. At this point, 20 years into their careers, the band members are probably sick of their music being described as “quirky,” but it’s hard to avoid that description as you work your way through the tracks here.

The “quirky” thing reminded me of my favorite Deep Thought by Jack Handey.

Laurie got offended that I used the word “puke.” But to me, that’s what her dinner tasted like.

CAKE performs two shows at Freeborn Hall in Davis on October 6th and 7th.

A bunch of really cool sh!t coming up

Ok, this post is going to be all over the place, but there’s so much to do in the next few months, I don’t know where to start. I know, I’ll start by looking backwards:

The Cambridge Footlights performed last night at the Sacramento Comedy Spot and were nothing short of hilarious. If you missed it, you probably don’t care whatsoever about English comedy, so telling you it was great won’t make you feel the least bit guilty. So…take that I guess.

Doughbot, the new doughnut establishment on 10th and W has started off with a bang and a whimper. Their opening day (last Saturday) lasted all of 2 hours and 45 minutes, from opening to close, due to a huge rush in the early morning hours that exhausted the small bakery’s inventory in less time then it takes to read the new Grisham book. Good for them. However, waiting until Monday when things had died down a bit, I went and sampled the goods and found them to be quite underwhelming. While the flavors and combinations sounded interesting, I found that they tasted a bit bland and uninspiring. And, worst of all, their doughnut dough is a bit dry and dull and overly dense. I’m giving them a few months to get their nuts together and start pumping out something truly exceptional.

There are a slew of great shows coming up all over town. Here’s the short list

Colin Hay- Sep 11 Harlow’s: The former lead singer of Men at Work is an incredible musician, songwriter, storyteller. He’s a joy to watch and listen to.

White Noise Jazz Festival- Sep 11 Torch Club: Harley White Jr. is awesome. He’s bringing together a rich group of musicians to play from 2-midnight. Bay Area cats The Broun Felinis, local guitar wizards Aaron King and Mike Farrell, and more will be performing all day.

Rebirth Brass Band- Oct 6, Harlow’s: You feel like funkin’ it up NOLA style? Trust me, this will be a fun night.

Bill Cosby- Oct 29, Community Center Theater: Dude, it’s Bill Cosby. There’s no one better still alive.

Cambridge Footlights in Town This Week

Besides being English, were you aware that John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Douglas Adams, Geoffrey Frey, Hugh Laurie, Sascha Baron Cohen, and Emma Thompson all had one very specific thing in common? Yes, they all were featured players in the Cambridge Footlights. The venerable British institution has been THE seedbed of British comedic talent over the last 50 years, culling the smart-asses of Cambridge University and steering them away from honorable professions and into the ranks of grubby performers.

This Thursday, the Footlights will perform their new sketch comedy show “Pretty Little Panic” at the Sacramento Comedy Spot. It will most likely be the only time in your life you’ll ever get to see this group, so if you’re a fan of the British ha-has you’d better be there.

Cambridge Footlights- Sep 8, 8PM, Sacramento Comedy Spot, tix $12

Circumnavigate the pole

This was pole dancing in my day

Today’s LivingSocial deal offers up “Four Hour-Long Pole Dancing Classes ($20) or One Pole Dancing Party for Up to Ten People ($100).” Which comes with a witty description, of course.

But there’s one pole you’ve yet to explore: the dancin’ pole. Build strength and confidence as you circumnavigate the pole with four classes for $20 (regularly $40) at Sacramento Pole Dance Studio. You’ll tone your core, arms, glutes, and legs in these hour-long sessions, and the small classes and comfortable atmosphere will get you dancing at any shape, size, or experience level. Or gather up to nine of your cronies, and discover the power of the pole together with a 90-minute pole dancing party for $100 (regularly $200). You and your gal-pals will learn some basic moves and get to wear masks and feather boas for your flirty performance. Magellan may have spent years in search of the Spice Islands, but you’ll spice up your life in no time with this deal.

I still subscribe to the Chris Rock view on pole dancing.

Sacramento “Music” Festival to Feature “Music”

So, the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society announced last week that they were changing the name of the Sacramento Jazz Festival and Jubilee (formerly the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee) to the “Sacramento Music Festival.” My initial reaction is that this is weak and pathetic. But then I thought about it, and realized that it’s cowardly and pathetic.

When I started going to the Jubilee as a tyke, it spread all over town like a giant squid, its tentacles reaching into every crevice in Sacramento. Now it’s shrunk down to fill only Old Sacramento — which is fine as admittedly the crowd has shrunk over the decades due to the unremitting scythe of death — but in the process of shrinking, it’s losing its soul. Instead of concentrating the essence of the Jubilee, which was old-time music mixed with fried food and libations, it instead is trying to find that perfect mix of party music that will bring out the crowds and keep the whole thing afloat. And even that’s not being done convincingly. Throwing a Steely Dan cover band into the mix isn’t exactly going to bring out the masses.
