One of the great things about California is our love of fine alcohol. We are home to some of the best breweries and wineries in the world, and the California State Fair is an opportunity to sample some of the good stuff.

Fair Fare
One thing I know to be true about the California State Fair is that there are so many booths, tents, lean-tos, shacks, plazas, pavilions, and chuck wagons, that it would be impossible to eat everything. So, let’s start with the things that I didn’t even bother trying: Mexican, Chinese, Greek, Thai, soft serve, cheesesteaks, onion rings, ribs, and corn on the cob. Why, you ask? Because, I respond, there’s very little point in chomping down on stuff that’s really, really easy to get anywhere in the city at any time of year. You only have so much room in your tummy, and I won’t endorse binging and purging (unless it’s for charity), so I suggest that spend your limited stomach resources on the truly unique and special meals. Here are those things, in no particular order: Continue reading “Fair Fare”
Pronto- Farmer’s Market in a Bowel [sic]
Despite its insistence on using a grammatically flawed slogan, “Real Italian, Real Fast,” Pronto continues to deliver top-notch luncheon fare.  Today’s meal was the “Farmer’s Market” salad. Mixed greens, arugula, corn, cornbread croutons, avocado, dates, almonds, goat cheese, and a citrus tarragon dressing. Sweet, savory, crunchy and crispy. This very well might be my favorite salad ever. Continue reading “Pronto- Farmer’s Market in a Bowel [sic]”
Maalouf’s Taste of Lebanon
When one thinks of “Mediterranean Cuisine,” one thinks of Italy, Greece, Morocco, or even Spain. One rarely thinks of Lebanon. But one should. Instead, one usually has questions about this foreign cuisine. Those questions are probably “What kind of food is it,” or “how much does it cost,” or “do I need to bring my epi-pen?” Unfortunately, these are the wrong questions. To steer one down the right path I have conveniently included the correct questions one should ask along with the appropriate answers from a recent visit to Maalouf’s Taste of Lebanon by Mrs. Eats and me.Â
Can we say “delicious gut bomb”? Of course we can. Can we still taste last week’s schwarma? Of course we can. Can we still smell the food on our clothes? Of course we can. Will we go back? Of course we will.
This is not a meal to be taken lightly–richly marinated meats, thick dips and sauces, plates the size of dried lake beds. Almost nothing at Maalouf’s is “lite,” but everything is pretty damn good. Â
Here’s a quick list of things that you are advised not to attempt after a meal at Maalouf’s: running, biking, swimming, walking, climbing, moving, sitting, speaking, thinking.
Things that you are advised to do after eating at Maalouf’s: horizontally lounging.

Watcha Doin’ This Weekend?
Here’s a sample of what the Eat’s might be doing this weekend. What are you doing?Â
FRIDAY– State Fair-Day 1: Eating (Especially looking forward to the BBQ Beef sandwiches at “Buns on the Run,” a small stand towards the back of the fair, next to the “kiddie” midway. Go check it out, the homemade potato chips are divine.) Also, don’t forget to check out the “Derby Girls.”
SATURDAY-State Fair- Day 2: Animal Extravaganza, 10am Morbid activity “From Dirt to Dish,” how living things are slaughtered for your sustenance, 11am Goat Milking! 2pm Swine Championships ( I have no idea what this entails)
SUNDAY- Recovering from State Fair. Also, may just go over to Old Ironsides at 9pm to check out the tribute to the Kinks featuring “Baby Grand” among others.Â
BBQ Update
Thanks to the urging of FOTR (Friends of the ‘Rag) CSI Sacramento and Carl, I had to go back and try Texas West BBQ on Fulton Ave. You see, I truly appreciate our valued readers and commenters for calling us to task when we fail to exceed their expectations, for going beyond the story and getting into the human angle of those things about which we write, for disagreeing with my taste in barbecue quality and urging me to reconsider my hasty judgment of a Sacramento-area institution. The institution about which I speak, of course, is Texas West BBQ, which has one thing in common with another fine Sacramento-area institution, Folsom Prison, and that thing is food quality.
Yet again, I have let someone talk me into going back to this swill-trough of an establishment and have been sorely disappointed. Today’s lunch, pulled pork sandwich and french fries (by the way, I refuse to capitalize the “french” in “french fries,” I’m not sure I can really explain why I’ve chosen to take a stand now, but I have), was a miserable failure as far as lunches go. Let’s start with the pork. The pork was pulled, I’ll give ’em that; pulled off of what though, I have no idea.  That meat was dry, I mean really dry, drier than sands outside of Barstow during a drought when a kitty litter truck, a silica gel transporter and a mass migration of super absorbent sponges all collided and sucked every last bit of moisture out of the land. Then there were the fries which had that stupid coating on them that Burger King started putting on their fries about 10 years ago, right at the time when they became totally irrelevant–coincidence? Finally their BBQ sauce, which was sweet, yet spicy without being weighted down by any of that pesky stuff called flavor.
Thank you, fine readers, for urging me to once again confirm my previous impressions that Texas West BBQ is, without a doubt, the worst barbecue joint to be voted “Best Barbecue” in all of the land.Â
Leatherby’s Celebrates 25 Years
Leatherby’s Family Creamery is celebrating 25 years of iced goodness by offering it’s original menu items at their original menu prices today from 11AM to 11PM.
From the Sac Bee article:
The price cuts apply to all items that were on the original menu, such as the company’s monster-size banana split, which uses a half-gallon of ice cream. It’s on the menu today for $10.49. On Aug. 14, it’ll cost only $3.80.
The hot fudge sundaes that today are $7.29 will be rung up at $2.50. The shops’ crab sandwiches will go for $3.99, compared to the current $11.99.
Yet another reason Sacramento should be on a Best Places To… list.
No more Cobbler for you
Out walking the neighborhood, my wife and I noticed that soul/BBQ restaurant The Cobbler was gone, replaced by a new Mexican joint called “Cantina el 7 Copas.” Does that mean “Seven of Cups” restaurant? Like it’s Tarot-themed?
We never got around to eating at The Cobbler, but with that and the bad news (for me) about Sidewalk, it’s almost time to ask: Are tacos becoming the next crepes?
Fare-thee-well to Willemina’s
The scuttlebutt on the street says that Willemina’s in Old Sac will be closing in the next 60 days. For those of you whom have not had the pleasure, this young venue has recently been the epicenter of Sacramento’s rockabilly, hotrod and tattoo loving community. It is also one of the few spots in town to feature quality German beers on draught.
Will the new owners of the property be the proprietors of Davis’ G Street Pub? If so, let’s hope they keep bringing the same high quality acts and events as the current owners. Cheers, and good luck!
J Street Sidewalk Pizza gone
UPDATE: 7:12 pm – My wife informs me that I misinterpreted her IM earlier, and that the change is official at the location formerly known as Sidewalk Pizza. It’s a taqueria. Sniff. Mmmm, tacos…
I had recently seen what I assumed was a facelift in process at Sidewalk Pizza on Jay street. My wife passed by the spot earlier today and reports that actually what’s going on is that the location is changing over to a Mexican restaurant. Pizza is one of those things — like burgers — that one person can be in love with, and the next guy absolutely hates. Sidewalk on Jay was one of my absolute favorite pies. I’m sad to see it go.
Interesting discussion about this at Yelp… speculation that it was going to be part of the La Fiesta/La Favorita enterprise, accusations of blindsiding the staff. It never seemed like business was very good at Sidewalk but it always seemed like a good location for eats. Plus as my wife just pointed out, it’s hard to complain about another Mexican joint.
