L’Image

In the Arden/Arcade ‘hood, residents, tired of having to shuttle downtown to eat at a high-priced chain steakhouse located in a mall, are abuzz with the arrival of their very own high-end chain steakhouse located in a mall. Ruth’s Chris (or is it Ruth Chris’? (or Ruth’s Chris’ (or maybe Ruth’s Kris (which is the way you would describe some lesbian who is a friend of yours but you happen to know a lot of lesbians named Kris so you have to describe her by who she’s dating which would, of course, be Ruth, like, “Not Kris Kelly! Kris Stephenson, you know, Ruth’s Kris!)))) is open and ready for business in the old home of Mace’s in the Pavilions shopping centre. As people flock to this nationally proven commodity, might I point out a little gem tucked away in the bejeweled embrace of the Pavilions, a gem that has grown a little duller since Vlade left the capital city, L’Image.

Riva Bar & Grill: Pride of Gold River

Honestly, I can’t even begin to describe the food at the new Riva in Gold River. So many other aspects of the meal outshone the food that I have no idea what to say. First, there was the fact that it’s Gold River neighbor, Il Forno Classico, a fine restaurant and our eatery of choice for the evening, was not in the Entertainment Book. I mean, how dare they! Who do they think they are! Just for that, we decided to eat at Riva. Next was temperature of the window booth in which we were seated. I’m not sure what the exact temperature was, but it’s safe to say that it was on the low end of the Kelvin scale. Add to that our rather interesting fellow diners at an adjacent booth, and any chance of actually enjoying the meal was gone.

K-Bar is ka-put

Rumor has it that Paragary’s K-Bar is closed as of today. First, I must admit I’ve never been to K-Bar. I know it was the it-spot for the nightlife crowd when it first opened, and also heard it was a quality place for post-work cocktails. Hmmm. It also had a decent location smack-dab in the middle of the downtown/midtown area. So, any theories on why it closed?

Did it suck?
Or are Sac-town cocktailers all about the new hotspots?

Banner Day, Hold the Onions

Today, I had my first egg salad sandwich ever. No kidding. I can’t say I’ve ever had an aversion to eggs or the idea of an egg salad sandwich, but I just never got around to consuming one. Until now.

Thanks to the fine folks at DAD’S on S St, my sandwich scavenger hunt is complete. I found the egg salad to be eggy and mayonnaisey, two of my favorite thingys. I couldn’t have been happier. Add to that some special DAD’S ingredients like meunster cheese, roasted red peppers and spicy brown mustard and I was a happy man. If you’re in the neighborhood, drop by DAD’S for some friendly midtown hipsterdom and fantastic sandwiches.

Support Your Local Pizza

Noting the rather cloying abundance of chain pizza places throughout the region, it’s important to revisit the local establishments, whether for good or for naught, making their own special brand of pizzas; all slightly different, but all containing the original pioneer spirit that made Sacramento “The Capital of the West,” or whatever other catchy phrase the Metro Chamber is trying to think up for us. Let’s focus on a few local joints that might offer respite from the likes of Round Table and Papa John’s.

New Restaurant Rating System

Not to step on sac-eats toes or anything, but it appears that Sacramento may be adopting a restaurant rating system much like the one used in Los Angeles.

I, for one, am in favor of this new system of green, red, and yellow signage. It is very annoying to visit a restaurant in Sacramento and order your food only to happen upon the hand written inspection results (scribbled, at best) posted on the wall that are either vague and/or detail something disturbing involving warm mayonaisse containers and a cockroach. I am sure the restaurant owners in town might have a different take as who knows what the guidelines are for getting a green card.

I wonder if this will change the way the web site sac-eats brought to our attention in August displays their inspection results. I am sure the Rice Bowl on Florin does, too.

Quick Hits: Local Mexican

I was walking downtown yesterday, the wind blowing full throttle, sheeting down fall leaves like Technicolor snowflakes, the ipod playing some intellectual Keith Jarrett piano solo and I thought “Christ, I feel like I’m in some independent film.” So, before I went all Zach Braff and convinced myself I could write a screenplay, I went to go get some tacos, because nothing is more down to earth than some good greezy Mexican food. If you need to shake the cotton loose try any of the following, they’re some of my favorites:

Angels Fresh Mex– 16th and U St.

Yes this is that place you see every time you take the 16th St. exit and head for downtown. And on occasion, you’ve said to yourself, “I should check that place out. It looks just run down enough to be good.” Well, it is run down, and you can only get your food at a walk-up window, but the food is fantastic. The meats used in dishes is so laced with flavor and spices that one can only imagine that they actually feed the hogs cumin and cilantro before they’re slaughtered. Prices are criminally low. Stop the car next time you’re heading downtown.

SacBee(n) Loves Them Some Mason’s

Though commentary at Heckasac lately (at least that small percentage of it that concerns itself with The Sac Rag) has been coming down strongly against the Snark, I hope the Sacblogging community can read between the lines and see that this interesting discussion developing there about Mason’s and Sacbee restaurant review suckiness is tangentially related to my comments about Sac being all about getting the newest trendiest thing and turning its back on the old and cherishable.

Barbary Coast Savannah BBQ

Quick bite here: Barbary Coast gets a JPG rating for “Just Plain Good.” The Carolina bbq plate is scrumtious with a spicy vinegar sauce that clears the sinuses and tempts the tummy. My only disappointment was that they were not offering potato salad at lunchtime. What’s bbq without potato salad? And why did the owner feel he had to give me a Forrest Gump-esque rundown on why they didn’t have the potato salad ready? It went like this: “Oh, we ain’t got no potato salad yet. We make it fresh here ya know, but it takes a while. First we got to boil em, then cool em, then peel em, then slice em, then dice em, then julienne em, then run em though a mandolin slicer, then pasteurize em, then cauterize em, then wring em out, then flambe em, then hoist em up a flag pole, then dry em, then use them to make a 3-D portrait of William Henry Harrison, then we add some mayo, then it’s ready.” Good food means never having to say you’re sorry.
