Mayoral Debate on Monday

I’ll be attending the Sacramento Mayoral Debate between Mayor Heather Fargo and Kevin Johnson on Monday at CSUS. It will be broadcast on KCRA-3 and Capital Public Radio 90.9 from 6:30-8:00 pm. Walt Gray, Pamela Wu and Jeffery Callison will moderate.

Most of the audience will be college students, who will also present most of the questions.

What questions would you like to ask the candidates?

Masullo: Another Reason to Eat Out More Often

Calling Masullo a pizzeria is like calling the Taj Mahal a grave marker.  Ok, maybe that’s too grandiose. How bout this, calling Masullo a pizzeria is like calling Ron Jeremy an actor.  Sure, it’s technically true, but it really doesn’t tell you all you need to know about the “Hedgehog,” or Masullo for that matter.

Yes, in most tellings, Masullo will be referred to as a pizzeria, but it’s much more.  The majority of the menu is made up of small, crispy, elegant pies, true; but the rest of the menu should not be ignored.  Beautiful salads, house-made pastries, top-notch ingredients, attentive service, modern design, dogs and cats sleeping together–it all works, it’s all tops, it’s all recommended.  Continue reading “Masullo: Another Reason to Eat Out More Often”

Help needed: University Park trees endangered UPDATED

Got this in the inbox this morning:

Can anyone refer me to a certified arborist who doesn’t make their living cutting down or pruning trees? I live in University Park Homes, a gated community of 150 or so homes that is set in an urban forest. It is near the American River, between campus commons and sierra oaks. The area is known for its tall colorful trees. Without notification, the homeowners association voted (three people) to remove 22 trees, 10 of which are directly in my view. An arborist has recommended the removal of 144 trees over two years replacing large shady greenery with a shorter variety of trees that don’t provide shade. It appears they are going for the Southwest look?

If this was my hood I’d be pretty darn upset. Everybody knows Sacramento is all about the trees.

A geek’s dream weekend

Wil WheatonMy geek credentials are seriously lacking, but even I can tell that this weekend is pretty much a star-loving geek’s dream right here in River City. With a capital T, and that rhymes with W, and that stands for Wheaton.

Friday and Saturday it’s From the Land Beyond, Sacramento’s horror and sci-fi show. Meet Wil Wheaton and Doug Jones, and (for your Battlestar geeks out there) not only THE Richard Hatch, but also Chief (and Final Fiver) Galen Tyrol himself Aaron Douglas!

Best Sacramento Web site
2. The Sac Rag

Congratulations to sac-eats, who for my money is the best blogger this town has seen or will ever see. (I may be a tad bit biased.)

As in previous years, we must extend a hearty Thank You to all of our readers. Without your participation this site would not be what it is today!

Proven innocent?

Perhaps all of you legal eagles out there can help me with something. The Sacramento Bee reports that a man was shot in the abdomen yesterday in downtown Sacramento. The story has a headline that reads, “Sacramento panhandler accused of shooting disabled man.” The first sentence of the story reads, “A woman panhandling in downtown Sacramento Monday pulled out a gun and shot a disabled man who refused to give her money, scattering a terrified crowd gathered at a busy bus stop, police said.

Is there a difference between *accused* and *police said*? Throw in a photo of the “accused” and you got yourself an open and shut case…

I did enjoy this quote though:

“Why would someone ask money from someone who is obviously disabled?” asked his younger brother, Adrian Perez. “This is really outrageous.”

Do disabled people have a history of not carrying spare change? Just sayin’

Update: Bad example as the suspect has basically confessed to the crime. I do still wonder what terms the media can use, quote, etc. with regard to criminal activities.

Mates of State announce show at Harlow’s

According to fft (*MLNSFW picture), Mates of State will play Harlow’s on October 6. Mrs Cool and I have seen some great Mates of State shows in our day (Old I, Capitol Garage…those were the days!), so I recommend highly. Between the Mates, the Shins and Electro Group, I was pretty much Omnibus records #1 fanboy from 1999-2001 or so. Mates of State have really turned into that label’s most successful alums; you’ve heard them somewhere on a cell phone commercial or something. Some tunes from the new album “Re-Arrange Us” are available on Mates of State’s website.

This show is not listed on Harlow’s calendar yet but 10/6 would fall between the band’s show in Portland and a show at the Fillmore in SF the next night 🙂

* Might Look NSFW (but everybody is covered).
