Prince is in Sacramento. Please go about your business as if he is not wearing the hat.
Hey Maw! Git a load of that feller's heels!Local restaurants, bloggers and even our mainstream media are reporting that Prince is hanging around.
Note to Sacramentans: If you don’t want to be seen as a cowtown, don’t crap yourselves when you see a famous person. Don’t disrespect someone’s privacy by bragging that a celebrity dined in your restaurant (especially if you want them to return, HELLO?), and don’t report it in the Sacramento Bee, even if it is a slow news day and you are simply reporting what other people are reporting.
Circo Hermanos Caballeros wraps up its Sacramento run this weekend at Cal Expo.
I'm really not sure what he is doing. But it looks awesome. When I saw the notice that Circo Hermanos Caballeros was playing Cal Expo through the end of the weekend, I immediately wanted to either praise them for not engaging in animal cruelty, or condemn them for their engaging in animal cruelty. Really, have you seen the PETA/Alec Baldwin circus elephant video? A lot of the time, PETA is a punchline, but that video is shocking and compelling.
Notably, the circus previously featured Jesús “Chuy” Aceves, who was introduced in the BBC series “Human Mutants”, profiled in his own special “It’s Not Easy Being a Wolf Boy”, and appeared on Maury. No reports of cruelty for wolfboy. Despite his difficult life, he was showered with gifts and offerings.
But.
Beyond the lack of any sort of cruelty.
The juicy bone you have been looking for in this story is…..
Continuing to step away from its image as The Trucker Brothel Capital of Yolo County, West Sac stepped up its game today by hiring Martin Tuttle to be the new City Manager. Tuttle will rival Rancho Cordova’s Ted Gaebler as our region’s coolest city official. Sorry, John Shirey.
Tuttle has already made his impression of the future of Sacramento (and past futures, too) by spearheading the development of the SACOG Regional Blueprint, which is used as a model for regional planning across the nation. He also plays a mean air guitar whenever AC/DC comes on the juke. At least that’s what I hear. Continue reading “Martin Tuttle to manage West Sac”
Two newish places have popped up on the eastern side of Broadway and I thought both deserved a little notice. The first is Original Poboys at the flat-ironish corner of Broadway and Alhambra. The place is so well-branded that I at first took it for a chain, but upon my questioning of the owner I found it to be an independent establishment. Specifically, the conversation went like this:
ME: Is this place part of a chain?
OWNER: Not yet.
So, apparently the owner is a go-getter type with Carl Karcher-esque vision, which could work as he has some pretty good ideas. First, Poboys is a small, clean establishment, offering the expected bayou fare, from poboy sandwiches to jambalaya ,bignets to fried oysters. The departure from the expected is the breakfast menu which features an all-you-can-eat cereal bar (not clear if milk is all-you-can-drink as well). I can just picture teenagers on their way to school devouring a pound and a half of fruit loops without batting an eye. I’m thinking that might be a tough sell to franchisees. Cooking great fish in Sacramento with Hank Shaw and Mickey Melchiondo.
It is fish cooking season. Whether you are pulling trout out of a lake, stripers out of the American, or chartering a boat to chase big catches like Chinook salmon, a lot of you out there have fish to fry. Or griddle. Or…. poach.
In the past day, two of my favorite angling writers posted killer fish recipes, which I have included after the jump. One is simple: How to sear a fish, as told by Sacramento’s own Hank Shaw. The other is an East Coast recipe for Striped Bass Cakes, which Captain Mickey Melchiondo says are five times as good as crab cakes. Continue reading “Stickie’s latest musings on fish”
This Saturday, the 2nd annual Amador Barbera Festival kicks off at Cooper Ranch. Unfortunatley, for the second year in a row, the event has sold out. So, if you didn’t get tickets and still want to sample the finest nectar to drizzle from the fruity bosom of Amador county check out this post from 2009 about where to get some of the best Barbera this side of Italy:
If we were to be honest with ourselves for just a moment, we’d readily admit that we live in the deep, enveloping cleavage of the bosom of great wine. Just barely peeking out over the plunging neckline of our beautiful valley, we can see some of the best vineyards in America staring back at us. And while Zinfandel, Cab, and Chardonnay get all the attention and all the praise, it is the simple Barbera that I seek out every time. Continue reading “Barbera on the Brain”
I don’t know why but this job description for a pizza cook position at Apple’s Sacramento office makes me laugh. I guess I’ve never read a description for a job in the food prep world but the specific language is cracking me up. I wish my own job description was as precise as this. For example, an equivalent expectation to being able to flatten dough without using a rolling pin would help weed out some undesirables in other fields, I’m sure.
Some excellent news came this week for Tahoe Park residents — and for anyone else who has enjoyed the park’s public pool. An effort by the Tahoe Park Neighborhood Association was successful in reopening Tahoe Park Pool for the 2012 season! TPNA was able to secure donations by the Sierra Health Foundation and local representatives Councilmember Kevin McCarty and County Supervisor Phil Serna and will be able to run the pool June 19th through August 25th from 2-6 PM Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
Not only is it now open but it will have hours after business hours on Weekdays? I couldn’t ask for more. I don’t know about you but I am really looking forward to Saturday late afternoons at the Tahoe Park Pool.
The pool has been shuttered for more than a year since being shut down by the City’s Parks and Rec department, so the TPNA is organizing a cleanup of the building (using NextDoor.com, because we’re plugged in like that).
Adrienne, who joined the KCRA-KQCA family in 2004, will be moving to Dallas to start her new job as co-anchor of weekday morning newscasts at KTVT. In 2004, Adrienne came home to Northern California to join the Traffic Pulse 3 team at KCRA 3. She would later become a morning reporter and co-anchor for KCRA 3 and KQCA My58 TV.
I just recently ran into Adrienne at the airport as she interviewed my family after a long flight about a story she was working on. She was as pleasant in person as she is on TV. We even did the tweetering thing.
California State Fair is looking for cars and RVs to participate in Metal Mayhem.
One change I appreciate at the California State Fair is their increasing involvement of the public. There are more competitions, more local bands, and more opportunities for you (yes, even you!) to participate in the Big Fun.
This year, there will be two nights of Metal Mayhem. Cars and even RVs are invited to smash it up, with a $5000 purse for cars and $6000 for RVs. Admission to witness the fun is only $5. Continue reading “Demolition derby drivers desired”
