FANtastic

If the Kings have the best fans in the NBA, why do so many people leave before the game is even over?

Last night’s spanking of the Warriors provided one of the largest premature pilgrimages to the parking lot that I’ve ever seen. When else are you going to see ALL the Kings play in one night? (I think the guy who mops the floor with the Kings logo mop even got to play for a minute or two.)

I was particularly thrown by the gentleman wearing his “DIE HARD KINGS FAN” t-shirt checking his BlackberryTM as he made his way up the stairs to leave at the beginning of the 4th quarter.

At least Sign Man, who sits just steps away from my mom & her friends’ seats, stayed the entire time (as did we.)

I heard it on the radio

One of the great things about local radio are the advertisements (I know Sac Rag author runnergirl1971 agrees with me). Specifically, the advertisements that are read (usually in real time) by the actual local radio personality. Sports 1140 really has this nailed down. From the Rise Guys to Grant & Mike in the afternoons, if you want to refinance your house and then add a home theater system with your new found riches, you’ll get honest info from these guys whose voices you trust.

From time to time, however, I’ll hear a spot that really makes me scratch my head. And, no, I’m not talking about Whitey‘s fake conversations with Steve Moskowitz, the 1 (888) TAXDEAL guy. Seriously, how come no one in the studio ever calls him out on that? It’s a comedy show, right? But I digress…

No, I’m talking about Mike Lamb’s recent spots for Equifax. He begins with a discussion about Harrison Ford’s new movie “Firewall” which involves identity theft apparently. This leads to the plug for Equifax where you can pay a monthly fee to have your credit monitored, or something, who the hell knows. It’s the last part of the spot where Mike really tests your intelligence, and I quote:

“Take it from me, if it can happen to Harrison Ford’s character in the movie ‘Firewall’ it can happen to you!”

Not to put too fine a point on it (I dare you to read that line and NOT finish it with "say I’m the only bee in your bonnet"), but isn’t identity theft a real enough problem as it is that associating it with a fictitious character in a movie only serves to lessen the credibility of both the company and the endorser?

Rag Alert: Seat belt sting snags several

RonTopofIt and SinghCity are out on assignment and reported back with this image of a CHP seat belt sting operation in effect in the midtown Alhambra corridor. RonTopofIt reports several stops in a few block radius of the picture (Alhambra and L, obviously) with seat belts being the topic of “conversation” in all cases. If you’re heading toward that area in the next hour or so be advised the fuzz are clamping down. Also buckle up because otherwise if you crash you might die.

Heckasac on Fargo

Beckler’s comments on the newest proposal for K street revitalization are spot on. I wholeheartedly endorse her use of the F word. Fargo is endorsing making K street “unique,” and here’s what Beckler has to say about that:

Well, if by “unique” you mean “copying another city’s idea” I guess you could say it’s unique to try to make our town look like the Holy Grail of revitalized downtowns.

You know what was unique? That mural on the inside of the entrance to the Tower Records on K Street. I haven’t been down there much lately–is the mural still there?

Jensen interviews Newhart

A great interview of comedy icon Bob Newhart on the Retrocrush podcast by Rockass.net and I Can’t Believe it’s Not Comedy’s Keith Lowell Jensen. Jensen manages to do a great interview without being starstruck–something I can’t imagine being able to do with someone of that stature. I always imagine myself as doing that Chris Farley interview bit. Jensen captures some really great trivia bits (that his wife contributed the “the show was all a dream” idea, for example) and some priceless reminiscing about Newhart’s early days. Don’t miss it, comedy fans.

Right Awn! Friday: “Reddish” is the new rust

rightawn.jpg

Much like LL Cool J, Right Awn! Friday has become something like a phenomenon. And you know what else? Like P.Diddy back when he was Puff Daddy, we won’t stop because, indeed, we can’t stop.

We’ve weathered the storm, fellow Raggers, and we’re pressing on because gosh darn it, Sacramento, you’ve done good!

Now, unlike R. Kelly, take your keys out of the ignition, and find out who gets the big shout out this week…

Nothing common about it

Whatever happened to common sense? You know, that little voice in your head that sort keeps you from doing stupid things? It’s sort of like a sense of what to do and what not to do that is common to all people, right?

In the words of George Costanza, “Was that wrong? Should I NOT have done that?”

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Inmates gained access to personal information about prison employees, including their Social Security numbers, after the state unlawfully allowed them to work in a warehouse storing the data, a guard union said Thursday.

Suuuuper, greeeat, graaaand. I’m sure you’re thinking, “Hey, they’re in jail, what are they gonna do with this information” right?

One prisoner found with confidential records had asked an inmate serving time for identity theft to teach him how to use the information, Jimenez said.

It is fitting that only the personal information of prison employees was compromised.

As you were, Sacramento.

Planning for our future

If you’re the type who watches Metrocable for fun (it’s OK to admit it), you may wish to give input on developing the Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) for the next 20+ years. The MTP contains big ticket items such as a beltway from the 99 corridor in the Elk Grove area to 50 in the Rancho area and light rail to the airport.

A series of workshops is beginning soon, put on by the Sacramento Area Council of Governments, known as SACOG, (which happens to be my former employer of about 5 1/2 years from ’95-’00.) Click here for dates, locations, and times.

Also take some time to poke around for data, maps, and all other things regional.
