Need Help With Your Passover Feast? Just Ask 3 Local Bloggers

It’s always fun to write about friends, and three fellow bloggers and friends and well-worth writing about right about now with Passover upon us. Friend of the ‘Rag Melody Elliot-Koontz (aka Melly), Eileen Makishima Thornton, and Shankari Easwaran, have been working their way for the last few months through the recipes of Marlena Spieler, a Sacramento native and world-renowned cookbook author. Specifically, they’ve been working on recipes from Spieler’s Jewish Cooking, a collection of over 100 Jewish recipes from all over the world.

They’ve been featured in the Bee, on the local networks, and the recipes have been used recently at the Oak Cafe at ARC. The whole project, called “Sundays With Marlena,” has not only highlighted the diversity and overall yumminess of Jewish food, but also the diversity and overall awesomeness in Sacramento. The local media have eaten up the diversity angle, what with folks whose ancestors came from India, and Japan, and England, getting together to cook Jewish food. But hey, why not?  This is Sacramento after all, the self-proclaimed (and demographically backed-up) most diverse city in America. I just find it funny since I’m either too much a Sacramentan or too naive to have noticed the whole diversity angle in the first place. I just heard about my friends Melly and Shankari and Eileen getting together to cook great food and though, “Cool. Yummy.” Continue reading “Need Help With Your Passover Feast? Iceland burns down

No, not the country.

Last night, Del Paso’s historic ice rink was lost in a five alarm fire. Fortunately, no injuries are reported and firefighters were able to keep the fire from engulfing any neighboring businesses.

Skating enthusiasts still have local rinks in Folsom, Roseville and Elk Grove, but Sacramento will feel a little less civilized without our own spot. The building was not insured and I cannot imagine that a new ice rink would be profitable unless it is attached to a larger project, such as a new sports arena.

Oak Ridge High School Trojans Win State Title

Props to the Oak Ridge High School women’s basketball team for winning their league title, the section title, the NorCal Championship, and now the CIF Division I state basketball championship. The Trojans took down the mighty Jackrabbits of Long Beach Poly 55 – 42 on Saturday night.

The Poly Jackrabbits (32-3) sought to become the first girls or boys team in state history to win five consecutive state titles. The Trojans, however, pieced together their own history by playing a fundamental brand of sharing the ball, defending with purpose and making free throws in the final minutes…Mark Tennis, longtime editor of Cal-Hi Sports/ESPN Rise, called the Trojans’ effort “the biggest upset in state girls championship history; not even close.”

Impressive!

Special props go out to the News10.net commenters who called out Ryan Yamamoto’s grammar and typographical errors.

The shoes are called “Uggs”, not “Ughs”. That would be more along the lines of “Ugh! You guys are supposed to be journalists and yet again, you were hellbent on getting the story out quickly as opposed to making sure it was correct.”

Nice one.

Visit Two FREE Museums Today

Snapshot from The Migrant Project website, where you can find a full gallery of photos from the collection.

Today’s a gorgeous day to get out and exercise your brain. Lucky for you, there are two museums offering FREE admission: California State Railroad Museum and The California Museum.

California State Railroad Museum, located at 111 I Street in Old Sacramento, offers two events (also free) while you explore. At 11 a.m., Rick Nahmias holds a lecture and book signing of his new book The Migrant Project: Contemporary California Farm Workers. This photo documentary book features forty black-and-white images of the often invisible faces of our state’s agricultural industry.

Photos from the book are also displayed in a 1920s refrigerated produce car in the museum–an interesting tie in for an industry that has built its success on the labor of those depicted in the images.

At 2 p.m., you can attend a multi-media presentation and panel discussion on the subject of fair food.

Meanwhile, at The California Museum, Continue reading “Visit Two FREE Museums Today”

The Case for Cloud Computing

I found this article about government agencies switching to Cloud Computing very interesting. As a Google homer, I try to force their services onto anyone I meet. If I could have Gmail replace my Outlook at work, I would be sound as a pound.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — For government agencies, cloud computing isn’t just intriguing; it also should be strongly considered, according to two public-sector decision-makers who recently made the leap, speaking at the Managing Technology conference Wednesday, March 17.

The conversation based organization Gmail provides would make sifting through work emails so much easier. Not to mention reducing the constant use of attachments taking up precious Inbox space.

Speaking of attachments, let’s see Outlook do this!

"I have included" message from Gmail
This is totally awesome and just wee bit creepy all at the same time.

Friday Night Concerts in the Park lineup announced

This won’t stop until one of them changes his name.

Downtown Partnership announced the lineup for their summer concert series at Cesar Chavez Park today. The series is sponsored by a local beer supplier, by which I mean they supply beer to local liquor stores: Budweiser.

Lots of the usual bands, including Kepi, The Secretions, The Brodys, Mike Farrell, and Mumbo Gumbo. Also quite a few that have never played the series before. And as usual, they have done a good job booking similar bands for each night.

Discount lift tickets for late season skiing

On the office bulletin board I noticed a flyer for the Sierra Avalanche Center, a non-profit resource providing avalanche advisories for the Tahoe area. Since they are sponsored by local ski resorts, they have some pretty killer deals on lift tickets for the next few weeks. If you’re looking for some late-season skiing this might be worth checking out.

Local Food Blogger Earns Two Top Award Nominations

Hank Shaw: Hunger Angler Gardener Cook (photo from his website)

There’s only one way to describe local food blogger Hank Shaw today: on fire! The writer was nominated this morning for the prestigious James Beard Award for his down-to-earth food blog Hunter Angler Gardener Cook. Earlier, his blog was also nominated by the International Association of Culinary Professionals for a Bert Greene Award. He finds out in April if he’s won the latter, and in May if he’s won the prior.

Last year, Hunter Angler Gardener Cook was also nominated for a James Beard Award, but the metal went to Sunset Magazine’s blog.  That’s right: our local guy was competing against a big company who can afford to pay their bloggers. My bets are on Mr. Shaw for this year’s award. Read it for yourself! I think you’ll love it.
