Bin Laden Killed, Maloofs Scrap Plan for Move to Anaheim

In a flurry of activity today, news of Bin Laden’s death has convinced the Maloofs not to move the Kings to Anaheim. Unconfirmed reports put most of the funding for the move coming from the Al Qaeda stronghold of Newport Beach and Orange, so the two events might indeed be connected.

Asked about his opinion on the matter, Kings fan Newton Carruthers said, “I think we should change that 6th Man jersey to a Navy SEAL wetsuit; they’re the real heroes in all this.”

Sacto MoFo – Get your ass there

If, by some chance, you haven’t checked out the Bee, or News & Review, or News 10, 13, 3, 40, 58, or pi, or one of the 1253 websites that have done profiles on tomorrow’s event, then you might not know that tomorrow will be your opportunity to sample the region’s best mobile food at the Sacramento Mobile Food Fest, or Sacto MoFo!

Head down to Fremont Park (16th and Q) Saturday, 12-6. You’ll pay nothing to attend, yet you’ll have access to some of the best tacos, gyros, sliders, bangers, trousers, slippers, and knickers you’ll ever want to put in your mouth. There’ll be DJ’ing from 12-2, FreeBadgin’ from 2-4 and the sound of wails as the food runs out from 4-6.

Say hi to the organizers Paul, Catherine, and Joshua while you’re there, and make sure to tell Josh your best super-offensive racist joke. I hear he loves them.

Smoking is Good for You

Smoking fish that is. And I was reminded again last week that there is no better smoked fish in our fair city than at Laszlo’s Gourmet Smoked Fish in Old Sacramento.  Sure, going to Old Sac is a pain in the ass what with the brick streets (notice they’re not cobblestones, they’re bricks, make note of it), the all-day meter enforcement, the strange DMV-like conglomoration of humanity, but it’s all worth it once you get a bite of Laz’s incredible fish. I’m telling you, his smoky treats were the hit of my family’s Easter feast. Even my nephew for whom ketchup is an exotic condiment loved it. Be it sturgeon, shark, shrimp, or salmon, you’ll be hard pressed to find a better chunk of formerly swimming goodness than at Laszlo’s strangely located Front Street store.

And before you start to complain that it’s too expensive at $7.95 per quater pound, realize that a) Laszlo is adorable, b) fresh fish is only slightly less expensive and c) honestly, how often do you buy smoked fish anyway? It’s not like they made a Sesame Street short about it.

Railyard Recycled

So here’s a new (-ish) video about the Sacramento Railyards project. The Center for Creative Land Recycling is one of many partners – public, private and nonprofit – trying to redevelop Sacramento’s historic (and historically blighted) former Union Pacific railyard.

240 acres of abandoned railyard has been spooning the north-west corner of downtown Sacramento for years. City leaders hope to transform this rail-etched wasteland into a downtown annex with housing, retail, office space, and entertainment and cultural venues, not to mention development of the riverfront. Fairweather Fan at Streets of London

I stopped by Streets of London for a drink yesterday and decided its still too early for Streets of London. Streets is a proud member of the Big Eight, Summer Edition. Why? Because it’s a great pub and most of its plaudits are earned in its outside area.

Between the outside foosball table and fact that there’s more seating in the backyard than inside, this little pub’s every quirk favors the great outdoors to its claustrophobic interior. For one, Streets is cacophonic when it’s crowded; you’re going to want to be outside. For another, did I mention foosball? Yeah, that’s outside too. Attention fanboys!

For all you Joss Whedon fans out there, unless you can survive merely knowing that somewhere he is shooting THE AVENGERS, come out Friday night to the Colonial Theater for a showing of “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”! Get your tickets at AmbersSweets.com, which is a website.

Are people dressing up and stuff, making this into the new Rocky Horror? I would be in favor of that–of other people not me doing that, I mean.

America is again hungry for a good steak

From the Sacramento Business Journal

So it’s been a tough climb back for Florin Towne Centre – as well as shopping centers old and new throughout the region – but deals are gradually trickling in. The latest lease for Florin Towne Centre is a Sizzler restaurant, which a couple weeks ago committed to taking a pad space between Starbucks and the building that houses Verizon and U.S. Bank.

I really have no idea what makes a restaurant chain successful. Just when you think you’ve found one you like and is always busy, it shuts its doors.

The Florin Sizzler, which will employ 100 to 120 workers, will be one of the first locations built with Sizzler’s latest design. Sizzler’s corporate office announced this week that it is starting to expand again with corporate-owned and franchisee-owned locations, and will soon open its first new restaurant in more than three years. “America is again hungry for a good steak,” is how the eatery’s promotional materials put it.

Can’t wait for Sac-eats’s review (the new old school says “s’s” by the way).

Jason Williams retires (again)

I am just now catching up on the news and noticed that former Kings point guard Jason Williams announced his retirement last week.

The 6-foot-1 guard finished with career averages of 10.5 points and 5.9 assists. He is the Grizzlies’ all-time leader in assists with 2,069…Williams played for the Grizzlies twice and played for the Sacramento Kings, the Miami Heat and the Magic. He was the starting point guard on the Heat’s championship team in 2005-2006.

Those were the days. Here’s a cool video of the glory years on YouTube. Oh, and that the elbow pass, and more.

When is the last time you thought of Lawrence Funderburke?
