I’m not sure a) why this is at all a news story, b) why it is highly featured on our local newspaper, nor c) why a headline has to be written like this: “Pa. dad denies playing ninja when son, 4, alone.” The only thing I understand about this story is that if somebody saw him doing it, then he obviously wasn’t a real ninja.

Over the weekend a friend and I took our families (or they took us) to the City Theater’s Storytime theater production of “Jack and the Beanstalk.” The performance offered exactly what you want in children’s theater — a cute little story, some jokes aimed at the parents (in this case, lots of perfectly wholesome SF Giants bits), brisk timing, and not too much overacting. Doug Lawson’s staging is fresh, and it is a tidy piece of theater, with some funny talking cow business (always a necessity in quality children’s theater) and good performances overall. This story from Sacto 9-1-1 made me chuckle as I can’t believe the movies this guy was pirating.
A Sacramento man pleaded guilty today in federal court to felony copyright infringement in a case involving the pirating of DVDs…His inventory for sale or rental included unauthorized copies of Hollywood movies such as “The Godfather” and “Indiana Jones”, according to a U.S. Department of Justice news release.
Really? You are going to do time for Indiana Jones? And people are still pirating DVDs? And selling/renting them in stores?
According to court documents, Yan Akhumov, 45, of Sacramento, distributed unauthorized copies of copyrighted motion pictures in Music Land stores that he controlled in Rancho Cordova, West Sacramento, Citrus Heights and North Highlands.
Avoid stops. If approaching a red light, see if you can slow down enough to avoid having to actually stop (because you reach the light after it is green). Speeding up from 5 or 10 miles per hour will be easier on the gas than starting from full stop.
Anticipate the stop signs and lights. Look far ahead; get to know your usual routes. You can let up on the gas earlier. Coasting to a stop will save the gasoline you would otherwise use maintaining your speed longer. If it just gets you to the end of a line of cars at a red light or a stop sign a few seconds later, it won’t add any time to your trip. Ditto for coasting to lose speed before a highway off-ramp: if it means you catch up with that truck halfway around the curve instead of at the beginning, you haven’t lost any time. In many cities, if you know the streets well, you can time the lights and maintain the appropriate speed to hit all green lights. Usually this is about 35 to 40 MPH.
Limit your driving (now that’s a concept!). This article includes ideas such as carpooling, combining trips and taking the first parking spot you find.
I wish folks would adhere to these tips regardless of gas prices. I hate that I get passed aggressively by folks when I try to coast into a stop sign or light.
While we’re talking about it, what do Sacramento drivers do that irritate you?
Guy Fieri continues his tour of Sacramento when Diners, Drive-ins and Dives visits Dad’s Kitchen. Bought by Julio Peix from some juggalos scant more than a year ago, Dad’s has quickly become a local favorite on Freeport with a tasty mix of comfort food, craft beer and great music. Poke your head in tonight, it will probably be a fun party. DDD is on the Food Network at 9:00pm.
Matthew McGuire, who blogs at From the Capitol, seems to have info that the Kings move to Anaheim is a done deal. Other than The Wall, on which this has been written for weeks, I don’t actually see that news anywhere else so I’m interested to see what develops.
Also don’t you love hearing that the Maloofs are willing to pay “whatever it takes” to the Lakers and Clips to get them to sign off on the relocation deal?
Surinder Singh's widow, Amarjit Kaur, second from left, is comforted by friends and family Saturday at her Elk Grove home. (http://www.sacbee.com)
Police said Saturday that they don’t know why someone gunned down two men – frail from heart attacks and advancing years – as they slowly ambled through a quiet Elk Grove neighborhood during their daily afternoon walk.
Surinder Singh, 67, died Friday afternoon on the sidewalk along East Stockton Boulevard near Geneva Pointe Drive. Gurmej Atwal, his 78-year-old friend, was shot twice in the chest. His family said he was in critical but stable condition.
The police have not identified suspects nor a motive, but have not ruled out that this was a hate crime.
I’ve never read a more heartless editorial. Steve Dilbeck of Abu Dhabi’s The National seems to think that the Kings woke up last week in Sacramento after a bender and need to get the fuck out of Dodge.
Get this: free agents do not want to live in isolated Sacramento; they do want to live on a bluff overlooking the Pacific.
He sounds like some kind of median income Nazi who only knows about basketball from the dictionary and only knows Sacramento from the map. Don’t they have like, slavery in Abu Dhabi? I’ll take Sacramento, ocean view bluffs or not.
