Breton keeps to Bee party line on Slavic Christians

This is one of the good ones.

Marcos Breton’s Metro column today features his take on the search for the men responsible for the murder of Satender Singh a month ago. Once again it’s important for me to state that those people need to be caught and punished, and that Singh’s death is a real tragedy.

Breton takes Sacramento to task for being the kind of place where culprits don’t walk into the police station and turn themselves in routinely. He also brings up the “unwanted attention” this case brings on the area’s “Slavic community.” Although he acknowledges that only “some members” of that community belong to Evangelical churches who have engaged in anti-gay protests, he goes right on ahead and assumes that the attackers should turn themselves in because “[a]ttacking a man, causing his death and then hiding from the law is the opposite of Christian principles.” He’s obviously read his stuff, this Marcos Breton.

Yellow journalism at the Bee?

I’m wondering what other people think about the Bee’s stirring article yesterday on “wounds that have festered for some time between Sacramento’s gay community and members of the Slavic evangelical community,” brought to clearer light by the beating death on July 1 of Satender Singh at Lake Natoma.

But I think it’s irresponsible for the Bee to make the jump that the attackers are part of that church. The tragedy of Satender Singh’s death is a reality. The danger represented by the tensions between the gay community and anti-gay Slavic Christians is a reality. But the lone thread connecting those two stories is that the attackers spoke Russian.

One need only read the comments on the Bee’s article to see how quickly readers picked up on the Bee’s assumption that these attackers were motivated in any way by their church. Some commenters go so far as to advocate closing the nation’s borders to prevent entry by “these people.” The only reason such commenters think this has anything to do with Christians is because the Bee made that assumption.

I feel like this might only inflame those tensions by putting it in the minds of readers that all Russian-speaking Sacramentans are necessarily bigots. If it’s true that those bastards, when they are caught, were influenced by the church’s rhetoric, then we have a problem. But until that is known, isn’t it irresponsible to cast the net as wide as the Bee has done?

County pays for medical neglect of inmate

The Bee reports today that the County has settled with a former inmate who was suing over neglect for a cut on his hand. Health care reform is all the rage these days, but something about this case tells me it’s not going to be the straw that breaks the camel’s back…

Ricky Kirk, in jail on a spousal abuse charge in 2004, had cut the palm of his hand on his wife’s teeth while hitting her in the mouth.

CBS13: Watch your back, Sacramento

CBS13 last night reported a story about a local mom who left her baby in the car seat, covered by a blanket, while she went shopping. Parents in the audience, and also anyone with a pulse and a lick of common sense, are duly horrified. Fortunately the baby is safe and the mom is out on bail. Somehow the baby was allowed to return home with mom–apparently this is a possibility if authorities determine it’s okay.

But to CBS13, the real story is at the perp’s house. Continue reading “CBS13: Watch your back, Sacramento”

City Beat, starring SacPD as itself

My wife and I were looking for information about the Sac PD’s bus billboards that show a random trunk search with the text “How much junk is in your trunk?” when we found City Beat, the Sac PD’s video channel. I dare you not to think of those public service announcement videos on “Reno 911!”

There’s actually some fun facts in episode #1 about the history of Sac PD. I would embed one of the videos here for you to watch but I don’t want to mess with the po-po…

“Man sought after making Virginia Tech-type threats”

Sutter County officials are looking for Jeffery Thomas Carney (oh really, they used his middle name?) because he has reportedly been telling acquaintances that he is planning a shooting rampage that will “make Virginia Tech ‘look mild.'”

This is really scary. I hope they find the guy. If only there were some way to remove the fame aspect from the minds of these psychos. For example, you might be able to prevent that by not rushing out to print whatever deranged rantings they send you, NBC.

My mind is reeling that at no point was there anybody in whatever team put that crap on the air who had the good taste and/or an ounce of brains to put a halt to it. I hope the parents of the victims sue the crap out of NBC.

“Monster Teacher” reporting

I was a lot more fired up to write about female teacher-male student molestation scandals last night, when I thought there was a brand new scandal on the heels of the Dry Creek situation. I swear there was a teaser for a story about an “FTMS” scandal with a mugshot of a completely different woman. But that was right before bedtime. Turns out, like many stories are on the Sacramento news, that was a flub. I just confirmed with RonTopofIt, he saw the same thing. Get it together, people.

But still, there’s much to discuss. It’s a shame that the reporting on cases like this always has to highlight the “double standard” controversy, but it’s still shocking when you hear the double standard working in soundbites and it goes completely unremarked. Like the neighbor of Kelly Spaich, who was quoted on the evening news saying “She’s an attractive woman… seems like she could get a man.” Or the numerous acquaintances with the perp who say “she’s a good person… I’m not going to judge her, I’ll leave that for the jury.”

“No red flags” found in radio contest death

From the “I don’t wanna go off on a rant here” files we learn today that Sacramento County prosecutors will not file any criminal charges against radio staff in the water-drinking death of a Rancho Cordova mother of three (read Runnergirl’s comment).

“Any reasonable person wouldn’t have concluded that she was seriously ill or in danger of dying,” said district attorney’s spokeswoman Lana Wyant. “There were no red flags.”

Uh, uh, really? The Sac Bee article goes on to cite facts to the contrary (saving me the trouble). My hunch is (and you legal eagles out there can help me out) that this is cost saving move to the County and the taxpayers. Thus allowing the civil case to move forward and the real fireworks to begin.

As much as I am behind personal accountability I just can’t come to terms with the footage of the DJs flippantly dismissing the callers who tried to warn of the dangers of such a contest.

Masque Ristorante: Would You Like a BJ with your Osso Buco?

This piece falls in the “total rumor” category as it was told to me by a few friends who live in Serrano.  Apparently there was a bit of a sting operation up the road at Masque Ristorante in El Dorado Hills last week.  It seems that the posh eatery did not only cater to the residents of nearby Serrano and their guests, but also catered to a number of prostitutes who used Masque as home base to troll for wealthy divorcees.  I’m sure that the management of Masque in no way knowingly supported a criminal enterprise and, knowing that they serve an exquisite duck sausage, do not wish to sully their name.

One thing does come to mind, though.  How would you be able to sort out the prostitues from the cougars in any El Dorado Hills bar?

Jackpot’s..err..I mean..Didley Squat’s Gear Stolen by Thieving Dicks!!

(Author’s Correction – The gear did not belong to Jackpot, but to their friends Didley Squat, and Jackpot helped pass along the alert.  I stand by the accuracy of the “Thieving Dicks” part, unless the brigands are revealed to be ladies.  In that case, I will issue a correction to “Thieving Cunts”. – Stickie)

This always pisses me off. Musicians and other artists have a tough life, and I can’t think of anything more professionally devastating than having your gear ganked by some fucking fuckity fuck fuck.

Local faves Jackpot have issued an alert. Please keep an eye out….
