Proper Hydration

As the mercury rises, it’s important to ward off heatstroke, and apparently the staff at Danielle’s Creperie have taken note of this.

A coworker and I just returned from a lunch meeting there and had no fewer than three employees topping off our water and iced tea with virtually every sip we took. Danielle’s, located at the busy Arden Town Center at Fair Oaks and Watt, runs a tight ship for their busy lunchtime crowd. Tables are turned quickly; however, the diner is never made to feel rushed. The food is always of top quality — I recommend the smoked salmon salad and splitting the raspberry chocolate crepe with your guest for dessert. (Danielle’s is also in the Entertainment Book.)

La Fiesta stunts your growth

Still restoring the caloric depletion from last weekend’s training, when I found myself starving in Midtown, I heeded the numerous recommendations of fellow ‘raggers and headed to La Fiesta.

I was impressed with the efficient line and process flow, as a young lady took orders prior to our paying while her coworkers (all in matching futbol jerseys) rung up orders, prepared the food, and served up meals in a matter of seconds.

La Fiesta prices their specials so when tax is added in, it’s a flat dollar amount — in my case, $7 for two soft tacos and a beverage — thereby expediting the lunch process that much more. The Type-A process-driven side of me was most pleased.

That definitely did not suck

Unfortunately, I’m talking about the vacuum cleaner I just used at the gas station.

I’m slightly OCD about the cleanliness of the inside of my vehicle. Since I go off-road for work and recreation on a regular basis, it’s not economical to get the Jeep professionally cleaned any time it gets grubby, so I resort to using the vacuums at gas stations and do-it-yourself car washes.

Here’s a quick list of some good & bad car washes and vacuums:

There are TREES on Fair Oaks Boulevard?

Shocker!

If you travel on Fair Oaks Boulevard between Eastern and Watt Avenues — also known as miles 18-19.5 of the marathon course — you’ve no doubt seen the new signs reading, “CAUTION: TREES NEAR ROADWAY,” complete with a graphic representation of trees near a roadway.

I’d post a photo, but given the speed at which people drive in this section, even my hardhat and orange vest wouldn’t protect me from being mowed over by a (insert name of luxury car or pricey SUV here.)

Coming Soon on ESPN2

Competitive cup stacking, cheerleading, and double-dutch jumproping will soon take a back seat to the next craze that’s sweeping the Midtown area: XTreme Blood Donations!

I give blood about every eight weeks, and I was overdue for this most recent appointment — with the wedding a couple weeks ago, I knew that if I gave blood that week, that would be the one time that they nicked something and my whole arm would be purple (for those who don’t give blood, that’s a rare occurence, so don’t let that scare you.)

Sitting in the snack area post-donation and noshing on my 2nd plate of nachos, my attention was diverted from the May ’97 issue of Better Homes & Gardens when an older gentleman asked me how often I donate.

Sorry, wrong number

One of the first things I learned when moving into my house in ’97 was that my phone number confused a lot of people — namely, people trying to call the auto parts store and drug treatment clinic/halfway house, both of which are one digit off of my number and yield no fewer than three wrong number calls per week. You’d think that with my answering “HELLO” and not “Hello, Cheezer’s Pizza!” or the name of some other business, that they’d clue in that they’d called a private residence.

With the house on the market, I answer all calls since it might be a realtor calling to show the house. Yesterday, the Caller ID showed a 415 area code calling, so I picked it up. A woman said she was moving to the Sacramento area from the Bay Area (“This is going well so far,” I’m thinking), and she needs to make an appointment. I said, “OK, when do you want to come over?” She told me she needed to get set up on her regular schedule. “Regular schedule?” I asked, especially confused since she woke me up from a nap that had me in deep REM mode.

How to plan a snark-free wedding

When my beloved popped the question on Christmas Eve this past holiday season, both of us knew we wanted to get married soon. (Why wait? It’s the classic “When Harry Met Sally” line of “When you know you want to spend the rest of your life with someone, you want the rest of your life to start right now” feeling.)

Both of us have gone to countless weddings over the years, have heard horror stories of Bridezillas and relatives getting carried away with the planning process, and with both of us leading busy lives, we wanted to keep things patently simple.

Here are a few things we did that kept things stress-free and allowed us, our families, and our friends to have a relaxing and enjoyable wedding weekend. Continue reading “How to plan a snark-free wedding”

Assuming it will ever stop raining

Most people I know are afraid to exercise outside when it’s raining (and many even run on treadmills at the gym when it’s a perfectly beautiful day outside.) As your resource for all that is running, I’d like to offer a few tips for those of you who wanting to incorporate running into your fitness routine:

– If you’re the type to be unmotivated unless you’re working out with someone else, give one of the local running clubs a try. My club, Buffalo Chips, is the oldest, largest, and friendliest club (we were even named “Best Running Club in the US” by Runner’s World magazine.) With more than 800 members, we have every level of runner — from those who couldn’t run down the block when they first started, to those of us who do what some think are crazy distances. Fleet Feet on J Street also offers some great beginning running courses, targeted toward newbies (but all levels are welcome.)
