Enjoy a (La)Tour of Fine Wine

Brew It Up! is offering a vertical tasting of Georges de Latour Private Reserve.

I don’t do Napa Cabs.

However, many of you do. Cabernet Sauvignon from the Napa Valley is widely recognized as one of the gold standards for California wines, and the Beaulieu Vineyard (BV) Georges de Latour Private Reserve is a highly regarded example of this varietal, a benchmark in fine winemaking for the past 80 years.

Brew It Up! is offering a special opportunity to enjoy a vertical tasting and to add some bottles to your library, both for a bargain.

Rubicon benefits SABA on Wednesday

Rubicon continues its support of local charities with their latest installment of 501c Wednesdays benefiting SABA, the Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates. A portion of purchases all day tomorrow go to promote safe and fun cycling.

If you haven’t visited Rubicon yet during Hoptoberfest, tomorrow would be a great day to warm up for the grand Hoptoberfest celebration on October 30 and 31, which will feature more than 20 of the hoppiest beers you can find in California.

I’ve got a proposition for you.

Here is a catchy little ditty to start you on the road to understanding the 2010 ballot propositions in California.

Year after year, I am amazed at the things that get put on the ballot for people to vote on. Most people have no idea what the hell the propositions on the ballot mean, yet we still vote for/against them. The system is clearly dysfunctional and the first step to solving this is education.

Some local friends from the California Voter Foundation have composed an educational, non-partisan, and catchy little ditty to get you on the trolley to understanding the 2010 ballot. Please feel free to ask questions and/or discuss particular propositions (NO talk of candidates, propositions ONLY) as long as you keep it directed towards educational discourse and don’t try to lobby our readers. I’ll do my best to answer any questions in an educational, non-partisan manner. Trust me, I’m a professional.

Temple Posts New High Score

Coffee Review recently scored Temple Coffee’s Guatemala Hunapu Antigua Bourbon 97/100, which is the highest score for any coffee in North America this year.

The Bee reports that Temple Coffee got some proof that their coffee is the finest in the land. Coffee Review recently scored Temple’s Guatemala Hunapu Antigua Bourbon 97/100, which is the highest score for any coffee in North America this year. They are already sold out of their current offering, but squirreled some aside to share with locals on Saturday from 8-11am at both locations.

Congrats to roaster Ed Whitman and Temple Coffee on this fandabulous feat!

Furlough Fridays Found Falsely Foisted!

An analysis was conducted by a non-partisan and neutral economic research firm that discovered the furloughs are actually harming the California economy. Hear that silence? That is the sound of local businesses dying.

The California Supreme Court ruled today that furloughs on state employees are not illegal, but that the Governor does not have the power to impose them. This creates a window of opportunity for Californians like you to stand up and call to an end of this ridiculous practice.

What? You support the furloughs? Well, read on, dear Sacraggians, maybe I can change your mind with some hard facts.

Roz Savage to speak at CSUS

Roz Savage is the first woman to compete in the 3,000 mile Atlantic Rowing Race
Roz Savage is a true bad-ass. She is the first woman to row solo from California to Hawaii, is one of the only women to row across the Atlantic Ocean, and will soon be completing her attempt to be the first woman to row across the Pacific. With so many millionaires paying to get sherpa’ed to the top of Mount Everest and environmental tourism turning dangerous adventures into family fun, the oceans are one of Earth’s final frontiers. People who dare to challenge themselves and mother nature on the high seas risk their lives in ways we can’t imagine.

With so much time spent on the open water, Roz has a unique perspective on our oceans. She has been named a United Nations Climate Hero, among many other honors, for her campaign to promote sustainability and to fight rampant pollution of our oceans by plastic.

Sacramento, eat and drink locally today!

As today is 9-16, we at the SacRag would like to encourage you all to show your local pride by enjoying food and drink from the 916 area code. I already stopped by Old Soul for some locally roasted coffee. Later, I’ll be helping some friends shop for wedding booze by sampling various delights from Rubicon Brewing, Two Rivers Cider and Revolution Wines. I still haven’t decided where I’ll be stopping for a locally sourced sandwich, recommendations are welcome.

Localvores unite! Celebrate every day like it was 916 day!

PS – Local brewers are on their way to Denver today for the annual Great American Beer Festival. Wish them luck!

LL Cool B!

Ladies love cool beer! If you are one of these ladies, our friends at Brew It Up! are forming a club just for you. Currently named Sacramento Women Who Love Beer (but looking for a catchier name), they are planning several ladies only events, including brewery tours, brewing parties and lessons, philanthropy and good old fashioned drinking fun.

Their first event will be a basic tasting to get your toes wet if you are new to beer appreciation. For $10, you’ll get to try four beers paired with four appetizers. Mark your calendars for Thursday, October 7 from 6-8pm and come meet the girls!

SF Mime Troupe this weekend

September brings us the annual visit from political provocateurs, the San Francisco Mime Troupe. Their shows are always poignant, professional, hilarious and free.

This year’s production is an original musical titled Posibilidad, or Death of the Worker. As a factory shuts down and robs the workers of their pay and pension to fulfill promised dividends, a pregnant worker accidentally instigates a strike. Bring a picnic, lowback chairs and a few bucks for when they pass the hat.
