Play Punkers Can’t Stop the Rock

Oooookay. There are a couple of angles from which I could begin this review and I don’t know where to start so let me puss out and just lay the my main points out right here. First, the Boardwalk is a less than desirable venue that’s far-the-fuck-away from downtown with security that doesn’t let you go back to your car to get the cell phone that you’ve forgotten unless you want to skip the show that you’ve already paid for, wristband and hand stamp notwithstanding. I have no idea why that is, but I will float the idea that the Boardwalk, being the 18 and over venue that it is, is afraid that the teenyboppers, mall punks, newly-pierced and tatted future hipsters that I’ll want to punch who can’t currently drink will be sneaking out to their cars to take shots of ten dollar vodka and come back to the show and cause a ruckus that security will not want to deal with. It was just my phone dammit. I can understand that dealing with the young’uns can an amazing pain in the ass, but I mean, c’mon.

Thank You Note to the Sacramento Bee

ScoopyHere at the ‘Rag, we are quick to take shots at the Bee, but sometimes slow to give credit where credit is due.  So please allow me to take this opportunity to thank the Bee.  For what, you ask?  For having the good taste to pick my name in their drawing for free “Gold Circle” tickets to the Weird Al show.  That’s right, Mrs. Eats and I were right up front for the glory that is Weird Al Yankovic.  Thank you to Scoopy and all the folks at the number one news source in Sacramento.

The concert was, to put it mildly, badass.  Weird Al went for almost 2 1/2 hours, covering recent hits, old favorites and everything in between.  Sitting next to us were two kids, neither more than 9 years old, who told us that this was their first rock concert.  The Mrs. and I were very excited to explain to the kids how things work, like the fact that “rock” concerts don’t always start on time.  Thirty years from now, these men will be talking about how their first concert ever was Weird Al, and I hope they think fondly of “super cool” old people that sat next to them and showed them the ropes.

By the way, we managed to get out of the fair mere minutes before they broke out the riot gear.  Thanks Bee.

California State Fair 2007 – Closing Week

This year, the Fair was a week shorter, so it was harder to cram in every ounce of fun that I usually derive from my season pass. The last week always brings out the heavy hitters on the Golden 1 Stage, and we’ve got some good music coming up.

Tonight – KC and the Sunshine Band (Who among us can resist putting on the boogie shoes?)
Thursday – All American Rejects (You know… for kids. Kids that like to pretend that they have problems)
Friday – The Commodores (No Lionel, but I am willing to bet that they will bring it. And by it, I mean the funk)
Saturday – Amy Hanaiali’i Gilliom (Possibly the #1 performer of Hawaiian music in the world and, reportedly, an amazing vocalist)
Sunday – Chicago (Who really kick ass, ask someone who remembers)
Monday – Weird Al (Do I even need to print his last name? You know who I mean. An amazing show, you won’t be disappointed)

Here are a few quick recommendations to check out:

DB comes back to life with Movie City USA

DB, creator of one of my former favorite local blogs, The Barnesyard, has come back to the personal publishing world with a new film reviews/lists/humor site Movie City, USA

Many of you may remember that I used to run a little film criticism blog called The Barnesyard. It provided me with an informal setting where I could “rap” with the kids about the real issues facing today’s youth – the validity of the auteur theory, the effects of the monolithic American movie distribution model, early Ozu vs. late Ozu, peer pressure, bullies, and the like. I shut down The Barnesyard almost one year ago due to pressure from
Homeland Security – apparently The Terrorists were so disemboldened by my tales of freedom that they had become lazy and uninteresting – but I’m ready to restart it under a different banner – Movie City USA.

The new site will publish a different type of post every weekday. I look forward to more of DB’s keen film sensibility and devilish wit.

Local bands On Demand

If you have Comcast On Demand, you can see two of the Sacramento area’s best bands featured in the Music Video section.

The new video by !!! for the single “Must Be The Moon” from their latest album Myth Takes (name stolen from Robert Aspirin?) is sexy, anxious and just plain wacky. Filmed in Willemina’s in Old Sac and someone’s Victorian house, this hard-driving dance number perfectly represents the hedonistic nature of the band, with make-up design stolen from Adam Ant. Lots of chickens, too!

There is also a 14 minute video from The Mother Hips, who (thank god) did not spend long on their brief hiatus. The video is a behind the scenes look at the recording of their new album Kiss the Crystal Flake and features a few different songs.

Watcha Doin’ This Weekend?

Sunday– The sac-eats/Runnergirl braintrust will make its triumphant return to the Streets of London for Sunday Night Trivia.  Come join us as we sip on English ales and do our best to top the top minds in Sacramento at this weekly test of pointless and not so pointless facts.  Trivia starts at 9pm but get there early unless you like standing.  (Or you can be like Runnergirl and bring your own chairs.)  Streets of London, 1804 J St, Sacramento

Just something about this town

The Game Guy was YouTubin’ and sent me a “must post immediately.” I present to you Scottish pop group Middle of the Road with their 1971 hit “Sacramento.”

There’s something about the people
That everybody knows
That gives you a tender feeling
Of the future

It’s so true. Music video (hilariously not filmed in Sacramento… is it even about Sacto., CA?) after the jump…

Whatcha doin’ this weekend?

I don’t know what you’re doing, but I’m playing in this show:

Sacramento’s newest and most revolutionary folk band will have their first public concert on Friday, June 29 at 8pm.

The “Dutch Elm Trio” featuring Greg Sabin on banjo, Chris Olsen on guitar and Pat Skiffington on bass will
make its debut at the Sacramento Comedy Spot studio at 1716 Broadway in Sacramento.  The trio’s
interpretation of classic folk has been hailed by themselves as “groundbreaking,” “jaw-dropping” and
“somewhat better than we’d intended.”

Special guests, “The Tip Top Trio,” Sacramento’s favorite rockabilly band, will be following the Dutch
Elm boys and rounding out an evening of musical entertainment.

Tickets are just $5 at the door, and they’ll be going fast, so make sure to get there early.  See you
Friday!
