Public Access show goes 3D with new episode

Local YouTuber and Wallpaper drummer Arjun Singh has a new episode of his “The Public Access Show” up, and this time he’s going into a new dimension: the 3rd Dimension. The new episode, released Sunday on YouTube, is in 3D.

Singh filmed the entire episode using 2 cameras, so it is “shot in 3D” rather than converted. The whacked-out, offbeat humor translates well to this new dimension, where up is down and nothing is as it seems. Singh’s “Advanced Drumming Techniques” sketch is here, as well as Muppets, high fives, and a showpiece sketch set in the “Star Wars” ‘verse. RanSACkedMedia.com is a fan too.

Monster Energy Aftershock festival comes to Discovery Park

Monster Energy Aftershock Festival Map
Are they sure this is *our* Discovery Park?
As I rode into work today, I noticed a lot of activity at Discovery Park with guys installing fencing and tents. Turns out, this is in preparation for Sunday’s Monster Energy Aftershock festival featuring Stone Temple Pilots, Deftones, Bush, Chevelle, Hollywood Undead, Theory of a Deadman, Escape the Fate, and Oleander. Wow, say that 10 times fast.

Tickets are still available, but not cheap. Has Discovery Park ever hosted an event like this before? Is this why Park Rangers are rousting Sacramento’s homeless campers?

Wondering if this is going to be best time every? Check out what is and is not allowed. Continue reading “Monster Energy Aftershock festival comes to Discovery Park”

Sister Crayon gets Pitchforked

In what is sure to add some weight to those “next big thing” comments about Sacramento’s Sister Crayon, ultimate hipster scene maker-or-breaker Pitchfork is offering the preview track Cynic from their forthcoming EP Other.

If you like Portishead, Mazzy Star, or Sneaker Pimps, (or for you hip kids, CocoRosie, Natasha Khan or Matteah Baim), watch for Other to drop soon and catch them live around town while you still can.

New website for ex-Sacto record label Mt. St. Mtn.

Mt. St. Mtn., the vinyl-only record label of Sacramento lo-fi/garage bands like G. Green and Standard Tribesmen, as well as other SF/Nor Cal bands, has launched a new website at mtstmtn.com. Taking a big step up from the label’s 90s-era band site, the new hotness has improved navigation to showcase the label’s limited-edition vinyl releases and print zines, including integration with a PayPal store to purchase vinyl and zines.

The label is set to distribute a debut LP by Sacramento fuzz-rock supergroup Fine Steps, but Mark Kaiser (of Mayyors and Omnibus Records fame) tells me the initial run is almost completely sold out. The Fine Steps (featuring Sacramento rock scene stalwarts Chris Woodhouse and Julian Elorduy) play an infectious jangly surf-rock that could be one of Sac’s next big music exports. Here’s “Tomorrow for All Today”:

State Fair rock and roll

Dave Mason, Jim Messina and Joan Jett perform this week at the California State Fair.

American Idol Scotty McCreery performs to a packed house at the California State Fair
You know, the kind of music that soothes the soul? Lets you reminisce about the days of old?

Last week, the Golden1 Stage targeted the kids with celebs from American Idol, America’s Got Talent and Disney Channel. This week, the Big Fun includes Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Dave Mason playing tonight, Jim Messina on Wednesday and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts on Friday. All shows are free, but you can also buy seats up front and close to the action.

If you are a fan, resolve to join in on some community goodness and dance to the summer songs of yesterday.

Family circus fun this weekend. (and terror)

Circo Hermanos Caballeros wraps up its Sacramento run this weekend at Cal Expo.

I'm really not sure what he is doing. But it looks awesome.
When I saw the notice that Circo Hermanos Caballeros was playing Cal Expo through the end of the weekend, I immediately wanted to either praise them for not engaging in animal cruelty, or condemn them for their engaging in animal cruelty. Really, have you seen the PETA/Alec Baldwin circus elephant video? A lot of the time, PETA is a punchline, but that video is shocking and compelling.

There are no elephants at Circo Hermanos Caballeros. It has a psychedelic swirly tent, happy clowns, trapeze acts, ball juggling, balloons, hoop dancing, a human cannonball, motorcycle stunts, oddities, funky dancing, hazing, box juggling, the GLOBE OF DEATH, pin juggling, conspiratorial clowns, more hoop dancing, hat juggling, a doggie wedding, duo juggling, Las Chulas Chulas, more hazing, patriotism, and fashion conscious juggling. There is a bit of midget horse action, but no elephants. When asked if they were victims of abuse, the horses reported that, save an occasional case of the trots, their lives were stable and they were not harassed.

Notably, the circus previously featured Jesús “Chuy” Aceves, who was introduced in the BBC series “Human Mutants”, profiled in his own special “It’s Not Easy Being a Wolf Boy”, and appeared on Maury. No reports of cruelty for wolfboy. Despite his difficult life, he was showered with gifts and offerings.

But.

Beyond the lack of any sort of cruelty.

The juicy bone you have been looking for in this story is…..

the worst website in existence.

It is terrifying. Continue reading “Family circus fun this weekend. (and terror)”

RIP Travus T Hipp

Travus T Hipp has died.

RIP Travus T Hipp

Here’s one for you old time heads. Long time reader Hecuba alerted me to the passing of KZAP’s free form radio hippie libertarian (with a small l) rantmaster Travus T Hipp (the poor hippie’s Paul Harvey). In addition to his hilarious and thought provoking appearances throughout the day, probably when he would spark a jay and bust into the studios, he had a Sunday night news show “Travus T. Hipp and the Rawhide Reality Review”.

Hipp got his start in the late 60s on KNEW. Until his death, he had syndicated his freedom speak on lefty stations such as KVMR, KPIG and KMUD through Cabale News Service.
