Takedown is coming!

Surewest warns subscriber not to torrent Game of Thrones

A local pirate warns (via email-he must have 3G on his ship):

So I got a notice from Surewest that they had detected that I downloaded, specifically, Game of Thrones over bit torrent and they advised that they would monitor for copyright infringement and would terminate service for anyone that is caught abusing the service in perpetuating copyright infringement. Just an FYI. I don’t know what makes GoT special as opposed to all the other shows, but just be careful. No more pay channel torrents for me.

The other local angle to this is that Ashwin Navin, a co-founder of BitTorrent Inc., is totally from Sacramento.

The true cost of an arena

This is my excerpt.

Sprint Center 3-10-07
Sprint Center 3-10-07 by ChrisM70 on Flickr

This week you’re going to hear lots of discussion about arena financing, and piece in the Bee today calls attention to the Sprint Center in Kansas City, which is acting as the new model of an arena plan that worked without costing taxpayers anything.

So you might hear a lot about the Sprint Center this week from various groups, and one thing to take into account is that the touted $200 million price tag for that arena is about far less than half ($470 million what folks thought a new Sacto arena would cost back in 2006 in recommending the failed arena tax. Just keep that in mind throughout the week.

UPDATE: KCRA reports that the cost could actually be closer to $370 million.

Wonks: The Next Generation

Today Sacramento State is hosting a commencement ceremony for this year’s graduates of the Master’s Program in Public Policy and Administration. I finished this program a few years ago and still consider it one of the best investments I’ve ever made.

If you work in the public sector, or in the political or nonprofit arenas, or if you aspire to work in these fields, I’d recommend giving this program a close look. The training I received in this program marvelously strengthened my skillset as a wandering politico and generally opinionated person.

Le SFFF, c’est magnifique!

I’ve been sworn to secrecy…but un peu oiseau whispered a few details in my ear about this year’s Sacramento French Film Festival  — celebrating its tenth anniversary! — and it is shaping up to be quite the event.  It opens on Friday, June 17th and features some fantastic French classics you won’t want to miss.

Whatever plans you might have had for that weekend, or the next, just toss them! The Crest is where you want to be!

Return Of The Ribbonses!

Agent Ribbons

I know I wasn’t the only one to shed a tear when Natalie and Lauren of Agent Ribbons packed up their vintage 1920s suitcases — as well as the Danelecto guitar and drumkit — and moved to Austin, Texas.  But the lovely and incredibly talented ladies are back for not one but two shows in our fair city this month!  They kick things off next Tuesday, May 10th, at Harlow’s at 7:30.  Only 7 bucks for what’s bound to be a fantastic show.  But if you’re not up for going out on a schoolnight, you can catch them Friday, May 20th for the Concerts in the Park series at Cesar Chavez.  If you’ve never seen them play live, you need to.  And if you have, no doubt you’ll want to catch at least one if not both of these shows.  See you there!

Voetberg Family Band concert on Sunday!

The wonderful Voetberg Family Band, from Centralia, WA, is making a return trip to the Central Library this weekend. Last year’s show was well attended and surely won scores of fans here in Sacramento, and I expect to see a massive crowd at the show on Sunday.

This outrageously cute octet is recommended for fans of all sub-genres of Americana music, from bluegrass to gospel. (“Both kinds: country AND western!”) Bring some cash, because you’ll want to bring home one of the family’s CDs, or the debut solo CD of eldest band member Liddy Voetberg, a beautiful collection of religious songs and other traditional tunes titled “He Leadeth Me.”
