I took the number 30 bus from East Sac to downtown yesterday. The bus driver was calling out each stop on his microphone. Cool. No problem. I was absorbed in my book pretty much ignoring it. Until he called out the Alhambra stop, and then belched before turning off the microphone. Ouch. Everyone looked slightly uncomfortable and there were a few snickers. Part of me thinks maybe he did on purpose, and part of that part of me thinks in that case, AWESOME! The other part of me feels confused and slightly violated. Plus the bus was late. Still better than driving and parking. That is all. Over and out.

Speaking of Election
As the SacRag is surely the only source of information to many of you we felt compelled to mention that today is Special Election Day 2005.
Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Not sure where to go to vote? Look up your polling place here. Not sure what to vote on? Do your research here.
These are crazy times, people, and expensive ones.
Did you know?
Found this great Sacramento site today (remember Geocities?) that details many of Sacramento’s claims to fame. While it hasn’t been updated it quite some time, you life long Sacramentans will enjoy strolling down memory lane with Ian and his HTML 101 listings of such nuggets like:
By the News & Review’s count, the Sacramento area has hosted 15% of the country’s serial killers, a high rate for the U.S.’s 20th-largest metropolitan area. (Caveat: the SNR counts 9 serial killers between 1971 and 1992, and three more since then, but adds in non-Sacto killers like Juan Corona, Leonard Lake, and Cary Stayner.)
or
In August 2002, Time magazine declared Sacramento the most diverse city in the nation

Light Rail News & Advice
FYI, “Trust No Man; Fear No B*tch” is the advice I got from new graffiti at my light rail stop today. I’ve had since about 7:30 a.m. to contemplate the saying and I’m still not finding it too relevant to my life. Also experienced on the light rail today, the following conversation on a cell phone: “They didn’t even have a convertible for me. I’m the homecoming princess and they didn’t even get a convertible. My mom was hecka mad, she was all like, ‘y’all are the most unorganized bunch of people how can they not have a convertible for the homecoming princess?'” At that point I put on my Ipod so over Allison Kraus all I got was “princess… homecoming princess.. convertible… next year…” but I think I got the important parts. Boy, somebody had a case of the Mondays! I’m just wondering who in their right mind would ride in a convertible in this weather. Anyway, that’s the news from Sac Light Rail. You heard it here first.
Bridges (?) on the River
“Bridges on the River” certainly sounds nicer than “Overpasses on the River” – but if the sight of an old highway’s underbelly doesn’t fit into your idea of a delightful culinary experience, I suggest you pick your table strategically. If you’re headed to the bar (and my focus at sacrag is bar experiences, not full-blown restaurant reviews), then you’re pretty much safe from the view of Highway 80, unless you’re by the big window at the far end.
Bridges has a good wine list, full bar and a fabulous food offerings. I hear the froglegs are the best appetizer, but my fellow cocktailers were too chicken (yeah, pun intended) to try them. Bridges is a converted mansion – each room is different, and the bar is no exception. Its warm, casual atmosphere is quite a contrast from the elegant foyer entrance and upscale manicured grounds.
Bridges’ location (way out on Garden Highway) probably limits its potential patronage – especially those looking for just drinks and apps. I do hope that more Sacramentans discover that Bridges is a great find, not too far from downtown. And especially that my fellow Natomas-dwellers realize an escape from stripmall eatery hell is not that far from home.
When You’re a Jet…
Heckasac comes roaring back this morning, with a nice counterpoint to previous comments made here about daredevil East Sac cyclists. On second thought, what if “Olaf” is the puncher? I know that’s a male name, but a handle is a handle for a reason.
Cool It With the Spacehog!
If you listen to KWOD 2.0 with any regularity, I’ve got a wager for you: Bet you can’t go a week without hearing that Spacehog song. You know, the only Spacehog song anybody knows. It was great for that one week in 1995, but I’m not sure how you’re going to contrast yourself from Bob or Jack or their younger cousin (coming soon, I’m sure) by putting it on weekly rotation. What’s next, Marcy’s Playground?
Two Nostalgic Observations
One bittersweet, the other just plain bitter. How about bitter first. Everytime I find myself down in Old Sacramento, I am amazed that for a large portion of my life–my adolescence–going to Old Sac was the most fun to be had. The walk from K Street (Comics & Comix) through the old DTP (Orange Julius) and through the tunnel to Old Sac (Evangelines, Time Zone) was a full day for a 12 year old. These days, I can’t imagine getting out of my car. Except for the Jazz Jubilee. And the Train Museum, which is actually still really fun. Who doesn’t love them that dining car with the fake nighttime outside the windows?
My second nostalgic moment today came when I noticed that when the light is right, say in the late afternoon, the word “Lucky” is clearly visible at Little Lucky where the word “Albertson’s” has been removed. I think it’s mostly 40-year old dirt, but it should bring a tear to the eye of longtime residents.
Sacramento Public Libraries…”Check” Them Out
I know, I know, very punny. But now that I have your attention I wanted to remind you of the many wonderful resources available to you at any of the 27 branches of the Sacramento Public Library system. Who knew, right? I’m sure most of you, but with the advent of the home computer and more importantly the Internet, public libraries have sort of drifted off my radar. Well, Mrs. T has been spending a lot of time there lately and really turned me on to the many free features the library has to offer.
I’ve mostly been to the Arden-Arcade branch. If you haven’t been, you’d be surprised by the number of computers they offer with free internet access or the wide selection of CD’s and DVD’s you can check out. Each time I’ve visited the vibe has been rather mellow in spite of the large numbers of people there. Plus, right now you have unique opportunity to see a Princess Diana collection. I only say that last part with my tongue partially in my cheek.

Endodontic Shout Out!
Well, looks like “sac-eats” has been opting for dessert too often on his nightly forays into the Sac eating scene because he had to have a root-canal yesterday. Apparently this surgery caused him also to refer to himself in the third person, which will cease immediately. I just wanted to give mad dental props to the folks at Sacramento Endodontics at 2 Scripps Dr. They made the harrowing root canal procedure painless and brief. I was especially fond of their use of chlorine in their irrigation water which led me to think of hot summer days and backyard swimming pools and not the eight inch probe sticking into my head.
If you need a root canal, you can always go to the town blacksmith, who will cauterize your face with a white-hot horseshoe or go to Sacramento Endodontics, where every tooth is special.*
