Tre-gic, just Tre-gic

A few months ago I ate crow over Haines brother’s newest offering, Tre. It had a fantastic menu, filled with inventive, whimsical, and, most importantly, delicious dishes. So it was with a heavy heart that I read Chris Macias’s post over on the Bee’s Appetizers Blog about Tre overhauling its menu.

It appears that the same crowd who was showing up for the food wasn’t showing up enough to keep the kitchen humming, and the late-night crowd wasn’t much in the mood for risotto balls and ribeye steaks. So, the new menu will be filled with “American comfort food,” (basically upscale Chili’s fare) and gone will be the Cajun shrimp and cioppino. It’s really a shame, but I’d hope that the Haines bros take the successful menu and transplant it to a place that will work. No matter what though, you can count on the menu having french fries. Mmmmmm, Haines fries.

Your Sacramento Jazz Festival (Jubilee) Guide for 2009

It’s that time of year again: Memorial Day weekend. It’s a weekend of jazz, good weather, and a civic event that is older than time itself (or at least older than anyone in their mid-thirties) the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee.

The big news this year for Jubilee fans is the renaming of the festival to the generic and absolutely non-descript name of “Sacramento Jazz Festival.” Despite the name change, it’s still a great event, maybe a little smaller this year, and maybe a little lacking in international or New Orleans talent, but still a blast. This year’s emperor is one of the best trombone players of the last 50 years, Bob Havens. A vet of the Lawrence Welk band, Havens could always swing the hell out of songs that should have been undeniably square. Check out this video for proof. For those of you who have never been to Jubilee before, I highly suggest you read last year’s Jubilee Primer to get tips on where to eat, where to park, and what to avoid. It’s also filled with really good jokes. I mean, really good.

Sports Show RIP

We heard from a reader named Doug this morning that CBS13’s “The Sports Show” may have been canceled. It looks like that scoop is indeed correct. Arran Anderson’s bio page on CBS13.com is “Page not found,” though Andrew Luria’s is still on there. Reader Doug also wonders whether CBS13/CW31 has canceled all sports coverage in general, which would seem to follow. “Sports Show” pretty much was the entirety of CBS13’s sports coverage. I guess we’ll see this weekend?

They always say these things happen in threes: Kozimor, KWOD, Sports Show…

UPDATE: looks like Anderson and “Sports Show” are gone, but there will still be sports coverage.

KWOD RIP (1977-2009)

Unless you are unemployed, drunk or an insomniac, by the time you are reading this, 106.5 KWOD is gone. As of 9AM on Friday 5/22/09, the commercial home to alternative music in the Sacramento Valley since 1991 is off the air. Be careful not to step in the pools of black mascara left by mourning fans of the holy trinity of mope rock (Morrissey, The Cure and Depeche Mode).

The irony is, according to rumor, it will be replaced by a station called The BUZZ, which will specialize in 90’s rock and alternative music. That’s right. KWOD may very well be replaced by a station that will be using KWOD’s exact format, but from 15 years ago.

Stuffing the ballot box

The cars-crashing-into-buildings news story has long lost its snarkworthiness in these parts, but there’s something special about this one:

K.J.’s Campaign Headquarters Collapses, 2 Hurt

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – The building that housed Mayor Kevin Johnson’s 2008 campaign headquarters has partially collapsed following a violent crash this afternoon.

The building located on 2030 16th St., gave way at around 2:20 p.m. Tuesday after two vehicles ? a Volvo sedan and an ICEE delivery truck — collided, sending the truck into the building and apparently into critical supports.

Drivers of both vehicles suffered minor injuries.

The building was thought to be vacant, but rescue personnel have sent a search dog inside to check for possible victims.

Is something afoot? Have people just lost their minds with their 12th election in seven years?

Nah, it’s just Sac being Sac.

Police cops at my polling place?

CHP officer at polling placeI’m not sure of the relevant legal issues but this just “didn’t feel right.” I believe this was a CHP officer doing a speed trap right in the entrance to my polling place this morning on Broadway near 59th Street.

He was perched about 5 feet away from the big sign that said “VOTE.” I’m sad to say that I’m not “in your face” enough to try to get that shot, but it would have been classic.

West Coast Brew Fest 2009

This is American Craft Brew Week, so wrap it up with the biggest brewfest in the Sac area all year. This Saturday is the 10th Annual West Coast Brew Fest. Several changes will happen this year to make it, are you ready? —-> The Best West Coast Brew Fest yet!!!! (You weren’t ready for that, were you?)

First, the nitty gritty. 60 breweries pouring more than 120 beers from 1-5pm. No tokens, just a glass, you, and beer ’till they run out or you are cut off, baby. $25 for advance tickets, $30 at the gate. Food, music, sun and fun at Miller Park, which will help to fight the hot forecast with heritage oaks and the cool breeze that cuts up the Sacramento River. Of course, carpooling, walking, biking, public transport, taxis or designated driving is highly encouraged.
