Peets alert!

It may not be economic but it's definitely stimulus.
It may not be economic
but it’s definitely stimulus.

Here’s another one for the “things are not as bad as they seem” file.

For all you midtown Peetniks, a new Peets has opened up at the southeast corner of Capitol and Alhambra. You’ll be happy to know there is yet another caffeine option in the area.

So, even though times are tough, apparently the fundamentals of our coffee are strong.

Red Hawk highlights our schizophrenic economy

Apparently the economy is like, bad or whatever. But you wouldn’t know it if you examine the booming casino market, as evidenced by the long lines to fill out applications at the new Red Hawk casino going up in El Dorado Hills. I suppose you could see this as a good sign–even in these volatile times there is enough walkin around money walkin around to create 1,700 jobs in our area. But one would hope that we Californians might have learned a thing or two about money and risk over the last few weeks!

Great show at Harlow’s

I saw one heckuva great band last night at Harlow’s. The funny thing is, this band has been together for slightly more than 30 years, yet they outrock bands half their age.

I speak, of course, of X, one of the best bands to come out of the LA punk scene, back in 1977. However, X is about far more than punk rock, although that is certainly integral to who they are. But they also bring in many other influences to their sound, such as country, rockabilly, old time rock n’ roll (a la Chuck Berry), even hints of jazz and funk. And there’s no denying that singers Exene Cervenka and John Doe are two of the most talented lyricists ever in the rock world. Continue reading “Great show at Harlow’s”

CBS13’s awesome credit fraud advice

amexCBS13 has some timely advice for victims of the latest credit card scam, which unfortunately has ties to a local sham company. (My transcript from the video below)

CBS13: Criminals actually tapping into credit cards and charging people for things they didn’t buy. … Investigators say these worldwide complains have been traced right back here…. Officials say this could be just the tip of the iceberg…

CBS13: Opening her American Express bill, [Granite Bay resident Amy Galloway] found charges from a company she’d never heard of called 24 Hour Corp.

Galloway: I finally called American Express and said can you check this out?

CBS13: They did, and credited her account….

Barry Goggin, CEO, Better Business Bureau chimes in with some helpful advice:

Ain’t no party like a AAA championship party!

Don’t forget, the PCL Champion River Cats’ season is not over yet. Today Sacramento will play the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (cool team name!) in Oklahoma City for the unofficial AAA championship game, pitting the International League and PCL champions against each other in a one-game “Bricktown showdown.” The River Cats won this game last year, the second year it was played. Because they are the best minor league franchise EVAH.

The game will be on at 5:00 pm on ESPN2. GO CATS!!! Update: Champions!!!

Congratulations Rivercats!

Here’s to the boys in white and black and maroon, who brought in their second Pacific Coast League title in a row. Congratulations go out as well to Carlos Gonzalez and Chris Denorfia who were named co-MVPs of the series.

What makes this feat even more impressive is that this team bears almost no relation to last year’s PCL title team. Because of the A’s penchant for bringing up players to fill the spots of traded-away stars, the ‘Cats roster is almost totally overhauled from last year. Which, of course, means that everyone who runs the team, from the scouts to the coaches to the manager, really deserve the accolades for not only putting together a great group of guys, but also getting the most out of them.

Thank you, Rivercats, for giving us something to cheer about.

R.I.P. Peter Camejo

Long time Folsom resident Peter Camejo died of lymphoma yesterday at the age of 68.

Camejo was the most famous Californian member of the Green Party, took 4th place in the recall election to replace Gray Davis, and was Ralph Nader’s running mate in the 2004 presidential election. He was active in politics since the 1960’s, where he involved in the Free Speech movement and Vietnam War protests at U.C Berkeley, and ran for president in 1976.

Known for his controversial political views, Camejo was an important figure in offering an alternative to our two-party political system. He will also be remembered for his pioneering work in investing, including creation of the Eco-Logical Trust for Merrill Lynch, the first fund of a major firm to hold investments to environmental standards.

East Broadway Rundown

Other than being the title of one of the best and most overlooked Sonny Rollins albums (I know you don’t care about jazz, just humor me), the title above refers to the fact that we’re going to race through your myriad dining options on Sacramento’s Broadway with a no-holds-barred, no-stone-left-unturned, no-child-left-behind attitude.  Are you ready?

Let’s go.  These will be in no particular order (other than geographically west to east):

Jamie’s Bar & Grill– Decent prices for hearty food. My experiences have been underwhelming, but others swear by it. Expect burgers, sandwiches, barbecue, comfort food, cigarette scarred tables, and waitresses that call you sweetheart. Don’t expect a sign above the door.
Two stars– 427 Broadway

Market Club– If you’re looking for a breakfast dive, you’ve found it. Standard breakfast fare with a few Asian touches (fried rice and fried eggs anyone?). You won’t find a better divey yet friendly place located in a produce warehouse yard anywhere.
Three stars-2630 5th St (off of Broadway in the fenced in produce yard) Continue reading “East Broadway Rundown”
