Last chance to gaze on the grotto?

I read in this morning’s paper that Vitoon “Vic” Assavarungnirund, owner of Thai Cottage, is going to be moving his popular restaurant to the former location of Thai Palms, which he also owns.

Thanks, Mike Dunne for a great bit of trivia–the grotto in back is part of Chicken Ranch Slough, which you can get a pretty good aerial view of couresy of Google’s satellites.

Gut Budget-Gourmet Wraps

For about $5 you can grab a very tasty treat from Gourmet Wraps in Town & Country Village on Fulton Ave. Wedged between a Starbucks and Jamba Juice (come on, what isn’t wedged between a Starbucks and Jamba Juice these days?) you’ll find a nice little storefront offering gyros, falafel, and cheesesteaks…yes, that’s right, cheesesteaks. This afternoon, the future Mrs. Eats and I grabbed a bite there with great results me the chicken gyro and her the chicken schwarma. Both of us full, satisfied and not too light in the wallet. Don’t let the girl working the front counter throw you off either. Sure, she might be dressed up to go clubbing at some Armenian disco, but she’s not afraid to dig elbow deep into some yogurt sauce and give you the daily specials. Trust me, the “price is right” for this “deal of the century;” you won’t “press your luck” by eating a “hot potato” at this fine establishment. (RIP Peter Tomarken)

Newsflash: Cars crash into Sac buildings (yawn)

This time, it was a three-fer, as a car and two cop cars hit a house:

“I was sleeping nice and sound and warm and I thought, ‘Oh this must be one of those California earthquakes, but I heard the sirens and you don’t ever hear the sirens in the house so I got up, checked the dog, saw the lights, I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh,'” resident Robert Ashcroft said.

No, Mr. Ashcroft, not one of those California earthquakes. It was one of those Sacramento-drivers-driving-into-a-building things.

UPDATE: I missed this story too. Keep an eye out for flying Lexusesses, people.

All snark aside…

A pretty rough weekend for Elk Grove, but one that created a few heroes in the two female Elk Grove deputies who faced down the maniac who had just shot randomly at several people and put an end to his spree. Who’s up for a Tuesday morning RIGHT ON!!?

Jon Johnson

Unfortunately this sick twist to an otherwise peaceful Laguna Blvd evening created another tragic story in the murder of John Johnson, the local photojournalist who was shot and killed while out on a date with his wife. Sounds like an all-around good man, with a passion for helping orphans, especially those in the Gulf Coast region, through his work with the charity group Assist One Foundation. He was planning a trip to Africa later in the year to work on a film about AIDS orphans there. RIP

Right Awn! Friday: Feeding the need

rightawn.jpg

This week, I’d like to give a personal shout-out for Right Awn! Friday. Why? Because I can. And why else? Because there are so many angles to this admittedly short story, that perhaps is worth exploring.
I will leave it to you to explore, but here’s a thought…

Do smokers get a bad rap? Always a debatable issue…

Bob Moricz and the frontier spirit

We, or at least I, talk a lot here at the Sac Rag about the frontier spirit being alive and kicking here in Sactown. Most of the time it’s being used in a funny sarcastic way, to describe the “paranoid grasping at humanity” embodied historically by the Forty-Niners (the gold-panning kind). But the frontier spirit has its good side as well: take SNR’s cover boy of the week, local horror auteur filmmaker Bob Moricz. I’m not much of a horror film guy, but I’m a big fan of the do-it-yourself, anti-Postmodern artistic mindset Moricz represents. My favorite quote is when one of Bob’s super fans tries to call his newest film “Palace of Stains” (screening at The Crest tonight at 11:00 pm) an “amazing feat” and Moricz replies “What’s amazing is that it doesn’t suck shit.” Bob Moricz, humble genius.

UPDATE: Great review of “Palace of Stains” on FILM FOR TOURISTS. FFT is putting together a really well-written blog, unless your definition of “well-written” includes “employs capitalization.”

In other SNR news, kudos to SNR president Jeff vonKaenel for launching SacYouth.com, a new Website listing of faith-based activities for Sacramento’s young people. Yay togetherness!

Midnight snacks

George Bush hates pork buns

I do not get out much. I really don’t get out much after dark. So when I found myself out and about yesterday in the wee small hours of the night AND hungry, I was at a loss for an all night eatery (other than Del Taco that is.) Luckily my handsome companion suggested that we visit the Plum Blossom for some pork buns. Man o’ man was that a great call. And at .75 per bun, you really can’t go wrong. They are open till 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday and have also applied for a liquor license. Mmmm, beer and buns…

Pancake Circus – Gut Budget

On the corner of 21st and Broadway lies a special treat for those in the know, an establishment with high family values, understated elegance and waitresses name Phyllis and Flo. It is, of course, the Pancake Circus, or as I like to call it, “Le Cirque de Crepe.” This is greasy-spoon eating at its best. Silver dollar pancakes, mounds of bacon, cereal and milk that come out of giant machines, men with high, conical chef’s hats slinging hash and gum chewing waitresses who call you “dear” and “honey” and “sweetie.” It’s a blast from the past with all the modern conveniences. You can get pigs in a blanket with a side of egg beaters and pay for it with your ATM card.
