Where Everybody Knows Your Name

So about two years ago I was appointed to Sacramento’s Housing and Redevelopment Commission. Twice a month, yours truly and ten other wonks meet to provide input and vote on what the city’s and county’s redevelopers want to do with public money.

Meetings are open to the public, but I can count on my own ten fingers (no toes) the regulars who show up and spout off. These eight or nine folks by default represent all of Sacramento’s residents. Continue reading “Where Everybody Knows Your Name”

Trash Talkin’

Earlier today I discovered that, for the second week in a row, my yard waste container was not emptied. Immediately, my blood began to boil and my skin tingled with anticipation and sweat. My pulse raced as I picked up the phone to call 311, praying that she would answer. Lately, almost anything is an excuse for me to call and hear her sexy instructions for better citizenship. Within seconds, her sweet, stern voice informed me that she was aware of the situation.

Oh baby, tell me more. Tell me that all your public services are going to satisfy my needs. Tell me how important my call is to you. Make me feel special.

Return Of The Ribbonses!

Agent Ribbons

I know I wasn’t the only one to shed a tear when Natalie and Lauren of Agent Ribbons packed up their vintage 1920s suitcases — as well as the Danelecto guitar and drumkit — and moved to Austin, Texas.  But the lovely and incredibly talented ladies are back for not one but two shows in our fair city this month!  They kick things off next Tuesday, May 10th, at Harlow’s at 7:30.  Only 7 bucks for what’s bound to be a fantastic show.  But if you’re not up for going out on a schoolnight, you can catch them Friday, May 20th for the Concerts in the Park series at Cesar Chavez.  If you’ve never seen them play live, you need to.  And if you have, no doubt you’ll want to catch at least one if not both of these shows.  See you there!

Kings rally Tuesday, Don G has details today UPDATE: Scot Pollard, Doug Christie, TESLA

Come party with these guys

Yesterday on KHTK’s Don Geronimo Show, Don G and Carmichael Dave shared the news that a “HUGE” Kings party/rally is being planned for Tuesday in Downtown Sac. Today on the show they will announce the exact location as well as some special guests planned. Fingers crossed for Chris Vlade and Peja. After the whole “purple tie” thing I think C-Webb is probably a lock. I’d tune in to Don G right off the bat if you want the details — Dave is promising to make the announcements at noon.

CBSSacramento.com has a clip of Don G interviewing Gavin Maloof on his show.

UPDATE: Scot Pollard, Doug Christie and TESLA are confirmed for the rally on Tuesday from 5-8pm downtown. I only know this from the Twitter pages because I had a meeting until just now. Did they talk locations?

More Than Just Hot Dogs

OK, next up on the Big Eight is Capitol Dawg on Capitol and 20th Streets. That’s right, I’m listing what is basically a hot dog stand in my top eight favorite bars in Sacramento.

Why would I do that? Well besides offering a smorgasbord of ‘specialty’ dogs and like fodder, Capitol Dawg also offers you perhaps the most elusive drinkable I’ve sought throughout Sacramento’s sprawling barosphere: the sublime Olympia lager.

Sexual wellness sees growth

Senor Butthead
He said "growth"

Times are tough, the fit is hitting the shan everywhere we look. I say it’s time to have us some fun. With that I present to you this little gem from kcra.com (thanks, David Bienick!) …

At least three major drugstore chains in the Sacramento area have begun selling personal massage devices, also known as vibrators…”The sexual wellness category has seen considerable growth in retail pharmacies due in large part to the comfortable setting and tasteful, responsible merchandising,” Vergara wrote in an email to KCRA 3. “Also, many consumers may feel more secure purchasing this type of product from a trusted, health-focused retailer.”

Good luck carrying one of these things around in your wallet.

Hopsauce tomorrow!

Rubicon Hopsauce Douple IPA will be released on May 4, 2011.

People are always asking me what my favorite beer is. I can never give a straight answer, as one of the many things I love about beer is the variety and seasonality. In the winter you may find me curled up with a spicy barley wine. In the summer, I’ll be in the mountains drinking nothing but pale ales for days on end. Usually, the best answer truly is “whatever is in my hand.”

Tomorrow, however, I will actually have a firm answer to that question. Not only will I have this beer in my hand, but it is one of the local beer releases that I look forward to the most. I have a soft spot in my liver for monstrously hoppy IPAs, I boisterously support local beer and I am a sucker for really fresh beer. Rubicon’s Hopsauce hits all of my sweet spots.

Cal Expo opens 9/11 Memorial today

Amid all the high-fiving, America, Fuck Yeah!-ing and patriotic thong wearing, today’s events also give us the opportunity to think about the tragedy and loss we have seen over the past 10 years. The 9-11 Memorial Plaza at Cal Expo will be open from Noon-7pm today for quiet reflection, contemplation and community unity. I know someone who lost her life in these senseless, violent times. Chances are, you know someone as well. I don’t find much comfort in celebrating the death of the man who killed her, but I do celebrate the chance that this may bring us one step closer to an end to the killing. To that, I lift my glass.

We now return you to our regularly scheduled snark.
