Via Rachel Leibrock Time magazine will mention local YouTube stars Smosh next week. “The SNL of YouTube?” If that’s anything like being the SNL of TV shows, is that even a compliment?

More fun from Craigslist
Folks trying to sell their PS3s on Craigslist better take note. Cbs13.com reports that a seller was beaten and robbed while trying to meet the buyer of his Playstation at a local gas station Tuesday.
And to think, I was worried about handing out my email address.
The news station recommends meeting buyers of goods sold on the popular online classifieds site at your local police station parking lot. That’s right. The next time you sell a good for a few thousand dollars online and need to meet the buyer to make the under the table, most likely unreported cash transaction, be sure to do it somewhere where your tax dollars will ensure your safety.
New crime mapping tool on KCRA
KCRA rolled out its Crime Tracker tool just in time for Halloween this year, and RonTopofIt just pointed it out to me this morning. It is a mashup of Google’s ubiquitous mapping service, and it works way better than the SacPD’s Crime Mapping tool, although I’m sure the SacPD’s offering is more inclusive and updated faster. One thing I have always loved about the SacPD’s tool is the ability to search by neighborhoods, not just Zip codes — this link, for example, shows you residential, auto, and business burglaries in the Ben Ali neighborhood (which is apparently a microhood between El Camino and Marconi on the West side of the Capital City, who knew). To get a similar map on KCRA I had to use an address, 1941 Iris Ave, and I get all of the crime hits (including Invasion of Privacy). But the ease of searching by Zip, intersection, or “Landmarks” on the KCRA site makes it worth a look.
Craigslist for dummies
I need some advice. I used craigslist.com this weekend to clear out some old boxes and miscellaneous garage items that I didn’t want to haul to the dump. Plus, the idea of recycling these items made sense. I only listed things that I wanted to give away. The sign up was easy enough and the service is free. However, once folks began replying to my posts I ran into a bit of trouble. What do you do about folks that say they want your stuff but then never show up or email back with specifics. Help me out here. I tried following the first come first serve method, but I had folks that said they’d be by my house in a few hours and then never showed up. Meanwhile I received several more emails asking about the items. What do I tell these guys? Has anyone found a method that works for dilemmas such as this? I feel weird about giving out my physical address, too. Do you find a common meeting place to make the hand off? Talk to me, Sacramento.
New Commuter website
Just got an email from our building’s transportation coordinator about a new website, Sacramento Region Commuter Club. Who doesn’t want to explore alternative transit solutions and be part of a neato club at the same time? I hope we get decoder rings. If you’re interested, check out the registration and see if your employer is on the cool kids list.
New forum for the politically minded
Got an email tip last night about Sacramento Political Forum, a new site providing a sounding board for Sacramento’s diverse opinions. Stop on by and squip to your turty’s content!
Barnesyard spamjacked, on hiatus
If you’re like me you’ve been hurting for new content on The Barnesyard. Well, turns out his old Blogspot blog was hijacked by spammers, so his archived content is available on a new URL. DB tells me he is putting the site on permanent hiatus, but says he might give it another go in the next year or so. I think The Barnesyard was one of the most enjoyable blogs in town so I can’t wait. With no new posts this month on “Film For Tourists” as well, that makes two smart, well-written local film blogs off the radar for the time being.
In the meantime though you can catch DB’s reviews (attributed to his much longer and harder to remember full name, Daniel Barnes) in the News & Review.
Haunted?
Cbs13.com has a helpful page on all things Halloween. Here’s a list of local pumpkin patches, corn mazes, and haunted houses.
However, what really caught my attention was a link to a listing of “actual” haunted places in California and, specifically, Sacramento. Apparently the Crocker Museum and Sacramento Theatre Company have experienced their share of paranormal activity:
The (Sacramento Theatre Company) 50-year-old vaudeville stage is home to a ghost that employees have named Pinky  because of the pinkish aura it manifests. The apparition has been seen on numerous occasions and is even credited with warning electricians of the impending collapse of an overhead lightbar. Several people could have been seriously injured had they not evacuated the area because of Pinky’s ghost. In the last four years, psychics have detected the presence of five other spirits in the building.
Man, doesn’t this sort of thing get you fired up to do some Paranormal Investigating? If it does, you may benefit from an online course or two at Flamel College: Continue reading “Haunted?”
A Travis-ty at My58
Meet Kelly and Travis, co-winners of the Host Hunt competition on My58. Faithful readers will know that I had a pick to click in this race, but I’m simply shocked, shocked that Travis pulled ahead of the pack.
For a taste of what you’re in for, check out Kelly and Travis as Phoebe and Joey announcing that MyTV has taken the bold step of airing “Friends.” See if you can get past the words “smelly cat,” I couldn’t. (I can’t link you to it, so if you think you have the stomach, visit Travis’s page and click on “Teaming Up: Travis And Kelly” in the video list.)

We’re #1!
The good people of Sacramento have demonstrated their..err.. exquisite taste and sophistication (?!) by selecting the SacRag as Best Local Blog in the News and Review’s annual Best of Issue, tying with Heckasac and decidedly kicking the shit out of the extremely weak Mark Williams Radio Show Blog.
Congrats to our writers and thanks to all our readers, fans and detractors!
