Geeks of the Underground

I recently dragged the wifey to a new history geek attraction: Old Sacramento Underground Tours. Turns out, beneath those kitsch saloons and taffy vendors we know today as Old Sacramento, there are a bunch of underground tunnels where the streets used to be before landowners used screw jacks to literally raise the city in the 1860s.

They did it because the Sacramento River kept flooding. So streets, sidewalks and buildings all had to come up about 10 or 15 feet. Some buildings stayed put as the sidewalks rose up around them so, as Mark Twain once observed, pedestrians could literally peer into people’s hotel bedrooms from the sidewalk. Creepy.

For $15 you get an hour-long tour of the tunnels left behind and, at least in our case, a very knowledgeable tour guide to explain all things Sacramentan history. I don’t usually find dirt and flood prevention inspiring but I was actually inspired. It’s a great testament to Sacramento’s time-honored tradition of thumbing its nose at those pesky forces of nature, such as gravity and water.

Best of all, it turns out the very serious show Ghost Adventures even visited Old Sacramento to inspect these very tunnels for evidence of the undead and we were lucky enough to get the same tour guide as Zak, Nick and Aaron.

How much more a part of history can you get?

Kickstart KLJ’s new live comedy album “Cats Made of Rabbits”

KLJ with that one guy from that one thing

Keith Lowell Jensen is at it again, raising money on Kickstarter this time to make his new live album “Cats Made of Rabbits” a reality. Or he’s raising money to make actual cats made of rabbits a reality. Either way it’s money well spent.

The album was recorded at a sold out show at the Sacramento Comedy Spot. For $15 you can get a copy of the CD when released, and $25 will get you the DVD copy.

Is it just me or is it hard not to insert “frickin'” into that title?

SF Outside Lands Festival lineup announced

Arcade Fire should play here

The 2011 lineup for the SF Outside Lands festival was announced today, headlined by 2 sets by the venerable Phish and seemingly required visits by Arcade Fire and the Black Keys. Mick Jones’s Big Audio Dynamite will also make an appearance, as will ex-Sacramentans !!!. This year’s lineup features a great mix of acts, from the standby hipster rock to old school R&B (the Meters), Sugar Hill records Americana (the Infamous Stringdusters), and loads of hip hop (Big Boy, the Roots). Heavy on the “know your popular music history” acts, which is cool — Mavis Staples, John Fogerty and several of the aforementioned. As Laura Mason of 7×7 points out, lots of cult favorites and local bands, so it should be a major turnout.

Comedy Spot Seeks Funds for Signage

Anybody who knows anything knows that the Sacramento Comedy Spot kicks ass. I’ve been seeing shows there since their humble beginnings on Broadway and love their theater at the MARSS building, but it is pretty easy to walk by them and not even know that there is a professional theater troupe there. Why? No marquee.

This is why SCS is holding an online fundraiser to try and grab some attention. There are a variety of ridiculously generous offers in exchange for your support. A lifetime pass for $500? Six months of advertising for your business for $200? Awesome.

I’ll gladly be ponying up the $20 to help in the effort and I hope you will, too.

Voetbergs swing the crowd at Library Galleria

The rain finally broke Sunday and this was almost as welcome a sight as the Voetberg Family Band filling the stage in the Tsakopoulos Library Galleria. And when I say filling the stage, I mean it literally. As promised, the Voetbergs put on a high energy show full of traditional music to a standing room only audience on Sunday. The crowd seemed bigger to me than last year’s show in the same space, but my wife pointed out this was mostly due to it being a Sunday afternoon and not probably due to the overwhelming popularity of my music journalism. Also, having been to the Camellia Symphony concert the previous weekend I saw almost all of the same people. It’s a really diverse crowd that comes out to these library events, from young hippie couples to old hippie couples and everyone in between.

The next time you get an opportunity definitely come check out the awesome Voetberg Family Band!

(l to r) Annie, Elisha, Vance, Tucker (on drums), Deter, Liddy, Rudy, Lilja. All bass players should be required to be named Deter.

City Theater’s “Beanstalk” pleases

Jacob Vuksinich as Jack and Mikayla Lambeth as
Kobe the Cow

Over the weekend a friend and I took our families (or they took us) to the City Theater’s Storytime theater production of “Jack and the Beanstalk.” The performance offered exactly what you want in children’s theater — a cute little story, some jokes aimed at the parents (in this case, lots of perfectly wholesome SF Giants bits), brisk timing, and not too much overacting. Doug Lawson’s staging is fresh, and it is a tidy piece of theater, with some funny talking cow business (always a necessity in quality children’s theater) and good performances overall.

Don Geronimo on stage at the Sac Comedy Spot

This Saturday, radio host Don Geronimo will be the star attraction at the Sacramento Comedy Spot. He’ll be the featured interviewee as part of the Comedy Spot’s 9PM show, Anti-Cooperation League. In the show, Geronimo will be interviewed by SCS owner Brian Crall. Undoubtedly Geronimo will share tawdry stories of life behind the mic, and improvisers from the ‘Spot will create a whole show based on those stories.

If you haven’t been keeping track, Geronimo is doing more than fine in his 12-4 slot on 1140 KHTK, but he’s also started co-hosting Good Day Sacramento on channel 31. We’ve also heard rumors that he might start co-hosting the evening news with Edie Lambert, calling Kings games with Jerry Reynolds, and reviving the role of Captain Mitch on daytime television. I will personally lobby him this weekend to also take on the role of Joe Carchione, the Green Grocer, and go into business partnership with Preet Kalrai.

Coexist? Comedy Tour film needs a kickstart

Keith Lowell Jensen

My favorite local raconteur Keith Lowell Jensen is seeking funds through Kickstarter to finish a Coexist? Comedy Tour documentary the troupe has in the works. Looks like they have about 2 days left to make about $5,000.

If you’re in the dark, The Coexist? Comedy Tour was a tour made up of a Jew, a Muslim, a Christian, a Hindu, a Budhhist and an atheist comedian, the atheist being your’s [sic] truly.

The way Kickstarter works is that the pledges will be returned if the sought goal is not met.

Sacramento may have talent

No sword swallowing allowed

You won’t be able to perform
this talent at the audition

From kcra.com we learn that auditions for the popular television show will be held today and tomorrow.

Come down to the all new Hyundai Store in the Westfield Downtown Plaza in Sacramento for your chance to put together an audition video which will be sent directly to the show’s casting director.

I did enjoy the “What Not to Bring” page.

We are sorry, but during the taping we cannot have fire, swords, or other sharp objects at the venue. If you have prop or dull swords, knifes, or other props that appear dangerous but are not, or if you need sharp tools (i.e screwdrivers, scissors, etc) to do your act, please bring a DVD of your act if your act.

And remember to…”arrive 10-20 minutes early to your taping location and a staff member will give you the rundown on what is expected. Each session will only last 90-seconds and you will only get one chance to get it right. You will not be able to re-do, so if you make a mistake, keep going.

This can’t miss.
