“Supernanny” has great idea

So, we’ve all heard by now that the casting team of ABC’s popular parenting show “Supernanny” will be interviewing families from 12 to 5 p.m. on August 23rd in Roseville, CA. Cool, right? Parents with rambunctious little ones can audition to have their lives improved by their “behavioral expert.”

The show is looking for families of all types who need help from Supernanny Frost, who is a “behavioral expert,” said Tiffany Dejillo, a Supernanny casting producer.

The casting call is being held at Pump It Up, an indoor inflatable party destination located at 10556 Industrial Ave., Suite 100, Roseville.

Hmm, really? Anyone that has been to one of these inflatable Thunderdomes will tell you that even the most “normal” kids can quickly get out of hand as they bounce around haphazardly, high on birthday cake, leveling anyone in their path.

Am I alone in thinking that opening up this facility to kids that may or may not have behavioral issues while their parents talk to casting producers is a dicey idea at best and should be video taped to air as its own reality show?

“Kill the pig! Cut his throat! Kill the pig! Bash him in!”

Jus’sayin.

I’m finally an Art Beast

I finally got a chance to take the whole family to Art Beast yesterday, and I submit for your consideration that Art Beast is the coolest family outing that has ever existed in Sacramento.

Imagine you live in a charming, drafty old Victorian in Midtown. Now imagine you have a second charming, drafty old Victorian in Midtown that you can use exclusively for your kids to play. (I’m not sure how you came to own 2 homes in Midtown. Maybe you had a lot of money invested in gold, or you own the agency that makes “There’s an app for that” ads for Apple. Work with me here.) If you were to dedicate the entire basement to dress up, the whole living area to every kind of art and/or craft known to man, the entire upstairs to dance and other creative movement like tumbling and arm-wrestling, and your backyard to water and sandboxes, you would have something like Art Beast.

Burrous takes credit for spotting Art Beast

This morning’s Good Day Sacramento featured Art Beast in several spots in the “Prego (sic) & Beyond Posse” segment. (Or are they are covered in delicious sauce?) Reporter Lisa Gonzales spends a few hours at the studio, which looks like the most amazing place ever, interviewing owner Bridget Alexander. Anchor Chris Burrous then takes credit for “finding” Art Beast. What I assume he means is that he saw it first on this here web log and thought it looked like a good story ripe for horkin’. Only Mr Burrous knows for sure…

Funny side note: the title on the videos tab says “Prego Posse & Beyond,” which is what you might think it was supposed to be called if all you had was the logo, which shows the words “Prego” and “Posse” in the same typeface (see right).

Kids art studio ArtBeast opens today

ArtBeastToday is the grand opening of a new venture called ArtBeast:

ArtBeast Studio provides open studio space, arts exploration rooms, and loads of classes so that children can dig into the arts.

It benefits the awesomely named Tubman House. For parents of little kids this is a godsend — both because of the budget and because of the lack of things to do in Sac when it is hot or raining. And I can’t say enough about the fact that they have a “pledge to the shy.” In addition to arts & crafts they have puppets and costume stuff and a music room, and in addition to free range play ArtBeast will also offer a number of organized classes. Perfect for preschool age kids or homeschooling families. This might be the coolest thing to ever hit the 916, family fun-wise. Not to mention the pretty slick Web design!

Hunt the Grid

One of my favorite kids’ comedies was Midnight Madness, which featured an all night scavenger hunt through Los Angeles. Riding the coattails of Animal House, Disney released a safe-and-sane college comedy that got its street-cred for casting Stephen Furst, featured the great Eddie Deezen (king of all nerd actors) and introduced the world to an young Canadian named Michael Fox. Wackiness ensued.

Where is Sunshine Today?
Where is Sunshine Today?

Now, it is finally my turn. Thanks to the Sacramento Bicycle Kitchen and MidtownGrid, I can live out this childhood fantasy in a wacky urban scavenger hunt. On May 9th, you can, too, if you come to the first annual Hunt the Grid. Zip around Midtown on your bike for glory and prizes with an after-party sponsored by New Belgium Brewing Company.

Sac City USD ‘Tour of Excellence’ on Friday

Attention Sac City Unified parents: the district will be holding a “Tour of Excellence” of district schools this Friday. This will be a good opportunity to tour any schools you’re considering for open enrollment; especially since you’ll have an extra week to wait on finding out if your kid will be getting in. Here is what the Open Enrollment page says about the timing of open enrollment acceptance and school registration:

Acceptance notifications will be mailed home (tentatively) by March 13, 2009. Upon notification, parents are required to complete student registration at the school of choice between Monday, March 16, 2009, and Friday, April 17, 2009.

Love that the District gets “tentatively” for their part but the parents have a hard date. As it turns out, the acceptance notifications probably won’t be mailed out until next week, according to the Open Enrollment office. So their “tentativeness” could cut into parents’ requirement by two full weeks.

Fairytale Town celebrates 50

Folks may be surprised to learn that Fairytale Town opened its doors on August 29, 1959!

Of course you already know that…

Fairytale Town is a nonprofit family park with more than twenty three-dimensional child-size play sets based on favorite fairytales and nursery rhymes. A family of friendly animals and children’s gardens nestle in this safe and colorful place. Fairytale Town’s mission is to promote the imagination, creativity and education of children.

Yesterday they kicked off a two-week book drive.

…families bringing in a new book to Fairytale Town March 2 – March 16 will receive one free child with a paid adult admission. All books will be donated to Woodbine Elementary School here in Sacramento.

Be sure to check out their calendar as they are celebrating all year long (with a new site on the way, too!)

Congratulations!

“Mastering the Mysteries of Love”

City Parks & Rec are offering a saucy class that would make a great gift to share with your sweetheart: “Mastering the Mysteries of Love”…

Talk about it, watch others do it, practice it yourselves.

Hey-O!!! They are talking about communication, of course. Though presumably there is the possibility of communication about watching others doing it and practicing it yourselves.

free play care will be included for children

What more do you need!

“I’ll play along with the charade”

Wait, WHAT?!?!

Rick Springfield, aka Dr. Noah Drake, will be performing at Tuesday’s tree lighting at the State Capitol. Festivities begin at 4:30pm.

(Maybe Luke and Laura will renew their vows on the Capitol steps during the ceremony, too.  I was always more of a Bo & “Fancy Face” Hope fan myself.)

Mario Lopez will be the MC; although, I’m sure it will be too cold outside for him to show off his ripped abs.

RunnerGirl will be out of town on business; otherwise, I would SO be there.
