Jimboy’s Grass Valley – A giant history taco

Checked out Jimboy’s Tacos second-newest location in picturesque Grass Valley this weekend, and let me tell you, it’s a treat. The same menu, the same addictive taco, the same distinctive taco sauce, with a few wonderful additions: free refills, which for Jimboy’s lovers is like manna from the heavens, and a delightful decor more appropriate for a sit-down taqueria than a fast-food joint. And along with your local boosterism you get some historical photos and one big lesson: as it turns out, the original Jimboy was a Grass Valley native! Though Jimboy himself is no longer manning the grease station (thanks MTSac), his name lives on. And after 50 years it’s finally come back full circle. And I am seeing an additional benefit of the Sunday taco sale–next time you’re making your way back from the North Shore enjoying some great skiing, stop off for a six pack of ground beef goodness (and the other kind of six pack too–they serve Cerveca). West off the Brunswick exit in Grass Valley.

Everytime I think we find the last one…

Sac Rag reader Plumwin sent me this tip last Friday, about another murder by sword:

Jonathan Ralph Lee, 25, a transient [from Sacramento], went to the Happy Valley home and allegedly used a martial arts-style sword on display in the house to attack his mother, Deena Smith, and stepfather, Barry Alan Smith, said Shasta County Sheriff’s Capt. Dave Compomizzo.

This is the third story in almost four months involving a murder where a sword was used as a weapon. That has to be a record or something.

“Blue and Gray Flannel Shirt” Robber Still at Large

It’s been a while since a great police description of a crime suspect has been worth mentioning. However, News10.net warns us that the “Poncho Robber” has struck 22 times in Sacramento recently and folks better be on the lookout.

The robber is described as a white male; 5 feet, 6 to 8 inches tall and weighing 150 to 180 pounds. His hair is brown or blonde and worn short. He is believed to be in his 30s or 40s.

Brown…or blonde, hard to say. 30’s…or 40’s, it’s anyone’s call. 150 to 180 pounds, if only people that knew me saw a 30 pound range in describing my weight.

Right Awn! Friday: Sticking to their guns

Happy Cesar Chavez Day!

It’s interesting that Right Awn! Friday falls on the same day as the one that commemorates Cesar Chavez. This is a person who exemplifies what Right Awn! is about – not just a shout out (usually), but a recognition of the “little guy” who tries to make a difference.

Along that vein, this week’s Right Awn! comes from Sac Rag contributor RunnerGirl (the future Mrs. sac-eats, yes yes we get it). Thanks for the tip RunnerGirl…

So Sad, So Very Sad

My attention was just directed here by the future Mrs. Eats and my day is nearly ruined. Bravo Ristorante, on Fiar Oaks Blvd, wedged behinds Swanson’s Cleaners, is closing its doors. I am so sad to see Bravo go. It was, in my opinion, the best Italian food in town. The atmosphere was charming, the piano music properly cheesy and the service was as good as any restaurant in town. Their dishes were simple and elegant without much in the way of flair or fusion. It was simple, Italian dining at its best and we are poorer in spirit and in stomach now that Bravo Ristorante is gone. Good bye old friend, I’ll be missing you.

I’ll drink to that…

KCRA.com reports that Chico State has canceled the remainder of its 2006 softball season after a high school recruit was admitted to a hospital for an alcohol overdose. Glad to see that dry campus thing is going well.

Which reminds me…while there has been a ban on alcohol at sporting events on California State University campuses, our own Sacramento State has decided to stay wet.

The fact that Sac State will continue to allow the sale of alcohol on campus is good news for students who enjoy washing down their pizza with a beer.

Amen.

Postcards from Sacramento

No, I’m not referencing Maya’s always engaging web log of the same name, although I’m sure she’s done this before. I’m speaking of a search on eBay for postcards from Sacramento. Have you done this? If not, give it a shot. What a nice little stroll down Sacramentocana Lane it is.

For example, check out this 1950’s shot of Sutter’s Fort. Or this great 1932 shot of the lake at McKinley Park. Look closely, no toxic green stuff to be found! Ah, the good ole’ days. How about Sacramento’s “busy” K Street postcard from the 40’s? I could go on and on.

I am no Sacramento historian, but the more I learn about this town the more I’m glad I live here.

Attack of the killer turkeys

Sacramento, and northern California in general, has a unique relationship with its farm animals. Yeah, I said it. Be it chickens, cows or pigs, we seem to have an interaction with these species that is all our own.

For example, take this story:

Foy said his office has received many calls about wild turkeys from Sacramento to Fairfield. He said it is currently mating season for the birds.

Those damned free lovin turkeys. You woulda thought we solved the problem last November. I guess we didn’t get them all.
