Sacramento Rawks!

Hey kiddos,

Two very exciting shows coming up in November!

First up, on Friday, November 12th the legendary/infamous Jandek is playing on the UC Davis campus. Just in case you’ve never heard of him: he’s released more CDs than you can shake a stick at since his first — Ready for the House — in 1978, on his own label, Corwood Industries. And for years he flew, um, under the radar let’s just say, due to his atonal tunings, unconventional lyrics, and complete unwillingness to make any sort of public statement or appearance…

Bishop’s Pumpkin Farm

I first took the family out to Bishop’s Pumpkin Farm back in 2006, but we had been itching to go back — so we decided to take off in the afternoon on Furlough Friday and head out to Wheatland. Obviously it is quite a trip out there, so you have to be prepared for that. It’s beautiful country in my opinion, though more and more of it is suburbs. Lincoln is insane with the housing.

Bishop’s is still an awesome experience, from the large goat petting zoo to the long train ride around the family’s “pick your own” flower garden and a patch of ginormous pumpkins. This time around we ate on location, dining on grilled hot dogs and some massive saucy tri-tip sandwiches. It’s average food and it won’t break your bank. For treats they have a “make your own shaved ice” hut with more than a dozen flavors and flavor mixes. And of course there are homemade pies.

So if you still have to grab some gourds and you are up for the drive, Bishops is a great time. I have a few photos after the jump…

Hands off

Hudson Sangree’s Bee story today about a shooting downtown in which a jazz musician shot a troublemaker includes this fantastic detail about some of the troublemaking that led to the shooting:

As they exited the building, the men touched one of several human-sized cat figurines belonging to a jazz band that was playing on the patio just outside the restaurant.

I’ve got a proposition for you.

Here is a catchy little ditty to start you on the road to understanding the 2010 ballot propositions in California.

Year after year, I am amazed at the things that get put on the ballot for people to vote on. Most people have no idea what the hell the propositions on the ballot mean, yet we still vote for/against them. The system is clearly dysfunctional and the first step to solving this is education.

Some local friends from the California Voter Foundation have composed an educational, non-partisan, and catchy little ditty to get you on the trolley to understanding the 2010 ballot. Please feel free to ask questions and/or discuss particular propositions (NO talk of candidates, propositions ONLY) as long as you keep it directed towards educational discourse and don’t try to lobby our readers. I’ll do my best to answer any questions in an educational, non-partisan manner. Trust me, I’m a professional.

Math and the housing market

Help me out here, folks. I was reading this article about former Kings basketball star Kevin Martin being sent a notice of default on his million-dollar Rocklin home and I am left curious.

Martin, who will earn $10 million this year playing for the Houston Rockets, first missed a payment on his $1.5 million home loan in June, according to Foreclosures.com. His lender filed the notice of default last month…Martin’s Rocklin home is listed for $1.1 million as an “active short sale,” meaning that if someone buys at that price, his bank could take a loss…Martin paid about $1.9 million for the home in the gated Whitney Oaks subdivision in July 2007.

Is the 1.5 million number referring to what he owes on the house still? And how does someone making 10 million a year allowed to short sell his home? And we’re supposed to rest assured knowing that Kevin is not going to walk away from this home because he’s a stand-up guy? What if this property had gained in value? Would he have donated the profits of the sale to a local charity? You know, because he’s a stand-up guy? I wonder. You invested in a property that went south, you have to live with the consequences, right? At least you do when your income hasn’t been severely altered like so many others in this country. Obviously I am no expert and do not know the details of this particular case, but it sure is tough to read as a tax payer and Sacramento resident who is upside down on his home that someone with the means to pay his bills is finding away to get around them.

Help me out here. Am I way off base? I am assuming I can blame Obama here though.

Sac Ra’mento gets Flo Rida

As usual, I am 1 to 101 weeks late on the goings on in Sacramento, but I was reminded today that popular rapper Flo Rida will perform both during Fan Fest and at halftime when the Sacramento Mountain Lions (1-2) play host to the Las Vegas Locomotives (2-1) in a key game for both teams Friday at 8 p.m. Pacific at Hornet Stadium.

Flo Rida will perform on the “Coors Light Entertainment Stage” in Lot 8 of the Hornet Stadium parking lot during Fan Fest, which begins at 5 p.m. He then will perform a 12-minute set at halftime inside the stadium. “I’m excited to come to Sacramento and turn it out for the crowd at the Mountain Lions game,” Flo Rida said last week. “I’m going to bring the energy, get the fans out of their seats and have the players ready to go. The Locomotives won’t know what hit them.”

Is this a big score for Sacramento? I don’t follow popular music at all, but I would guess that for a fledgling professional football league like the UFL, this has to be good for business. Has anyone been to a game? Apparently, their first home game played to a sold out crowd at Sac State’s Hornet Stadium and lead to a traffic nightmare. This is being addressed for the October 15th game.

Also, a $40,000 scholarship will be awarded to a college student if he or she is able to kick a field goal. Students with proper identification will receive $5 off tickets to Friday’s game. And, tickets for Friday’s game are just $10 for California state employees.

Anyone that has ever tried to kick a field goal knows that it is extremely difficult to do. Even from 30 yards out. Any joker can get lucky with a half court shot at a Kings game, but knocking it through the uprights would be fun to see.

Zombie related scheduling nightmare on Halloween

This year, October 31 not only brings us candy and costumed fun, but it brings us AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” based on the acclaimed graphic novel published by Berkeley’s Image Comics. However, local film series Movies on a Big Screen is showing George A. Romero’s 1968 classic “Night of the Living Dead,” widely considered the finest example of the zombie film genre. So your options are a classic that you have seen a bazillion times but maybe never on the big screen with other fans, or the small screen debut of a more relevant story and a soon-to-be classic.
