From the Bee’s portrait Monday of San Francisco Assemblyman Tom Ammiano:
When the Assembly was locked into all-night budget talks last winter, Ammiano broke the tension while joining colleagues for a brief nap in the lounge.
“He said he hadn’t slept with that many people since the ’70s,” recalled Assemblyman John Perez, D-Los Angeles.
Life sure was different before AIDS. To quote Abed: Hence AIDS.
Here’s a shot taken in a busy Sacramento shopping center last week. You may have trouble getting into this area, but once you do you should be able to find our way out no problem.
NOTE: If you would like to participate in the Where was I? fun, feel free to send me your photograph along with a short blurb (and, you know, where you were) to rontopofit at sacrag dot com.
Mark your calendar for the first annual Sacramento Beer Week, February 24-27 2010!
Following in the footsteps of incredibly successful beer weeks from San Francisco and Philadelphia, Sacramento area beer folks are planning the first annual Sacramento Beer Week for February 24-27, 2010.
This is nothing more than a mark-your-calendar kind of advisory, as this event is still in the early planning phase, but it would be interesting to hear from readers about what kind of events you would be interested in attending. Beer history? Brewing demonstrations? Food and beer parings? Beer sampling? Beer pong tournament? Pub crawl? Beer trivia contest?
If you are interested in hosting an event for Sacramento Beer Week, drop me a line at Stickie(at)sacrag(dot)com with your idea and I’ll pass along any serious inquiries.
Just as we were there when they first opened their doors, SinghCity and I enjoyed our favorite burrito today in the renovated digs. You’ll be happy to know the menu has been upgraded, the ceiling fans seem to be new, AND they have what appears to be thermostats that may or may not control the conditioning of air (see photo)! You summer patrons will surely appreciate that one.
While we enjoyed the taquerÃa down the street, we are really glad to have The Party back within walking distance.
I mean to blog this earlier in the week, but if you’re a current or potential Sac City Unified parent, you might want to check out the “Showcase of Schools/Open Enrollment Fair†tomorrow:
The fair is the place to go for information about SCUSD schools and programs and meeting principals, students and teachers from all schools in the district. Translators will be available. Families will also be able to learn more about the February 2010 open enrollment application process which will allow students to apply to schools not in their neighborhood attendance area. Representatives from local colleges and technical institutes will be available with information about their programs and to answer questions about how to apply at their
colleges or institutes. District staff from offices such as Special Education, Child Development, and Health Services will also be on hand.
The fair will be held tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 7) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Serna Center, 5735 47th Ave.
Jericho was at the Sacramento Horror Film Festival two weeks ago … for a screening of a movie in which he appears. During a Q&A session, Jericho referred to the moderator several times as “Hadji” — a term sometimes used as a racial slur against Middle Easterners.
After the first wave of slurs — and a random shot at Paris Hilton — the host jokingly takes Jericho’s drink to sniff it for booze, when Chris chimes back, “it’s apple juice … fag.”
Agent Ribbons is ready for a primetime boutSacramento’s Agent Ribbons are taking a step today in opening the doors to wider exposure, more fans and (fingers crossed) a more successful career in the music biz. At 6pm they will appear on Demolisten, KXLU’s showcase of underground artists. Agent Ribbons performs Victorian Punk and Baroque Pop, with songs that are simultaneously haunting and whimsical, rocking and longing, beautiful and disturbing. This year, they expanded from a duo to a trio, which has added several beautiful new elements to their live shows, and have been busy touring the world and recording a concept album called Chateau Crone.
KXLU, the FM station of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, is known worldwide as one of the gold standards of college radio. Their diverse programming and dedication to cutting edge music has resulted in thousands of bands over the years lining up at their doors, clamoring for access to the playlist. Demolisten, which has aired weekly since 1984, is one of the primary gatekeepers of the KXLU airwaves. DJs Fred and Octavius have the difficult job of performing triage on the music of the day and deciding which acts need immediate attention.
The story takes place in Germany in the 1800s, yet you could easily be watching a modern drama. The themes are utterly timeless: teenage rebellion against strict parents and stern teachers; new love; curiosity about the body; heartache and hope.
