It’s on like donkey kong!

Jim Rome, the nationally syndicated sports radio host – and sports radio icon – of “The Jim Rome Show” (heard daily on KHTK 1140AM from 9 AM to 12 PM) is holding his “Smack Off” on Friday, May 4, 2007.

What is the Smack Off? According to Wikipedia:

The Smack-Off is an annual competition on The Jim Rome Show, held in mid-to-late spring and which takes up the entire program on a Friday. The contest is a way to recognize the best callers to the show, as well as a means of determining the best caller of the year. Show host Jim Rome has referred to the Smack-Off as the most important show of the entire year.

Ain’t your caller-back girl

In the true spirit of the Sac Rag RIGHT AWN!, I’d like to bring to your attention (thanks for the tip, RonTopofIt) to one Sacramento resident by the name of Andre Lamme:

Telemarketers ignoring the “do not call” registry should think twice before calling Andre Lamme’s house in Sacramento.

Fed up with repeated calls from stubborn telemarketers, Lamme resorted to a little-known federal law allowing consumers to sue violators in small claims court.

Despite getting my phone numbers on the national do-not-call registry, I’m still getting calls from telemarketers, and I’ve gotten tired of warning these interruptors to my dinner that it’s illegal for them to call me.

Imus have said something bad

By now many of you have heard of controversy that nationally syndicated (and future former) radio host Don Imus has put himself in:

The drama started when Imus referred to the Rutgers University women’s basketball team as a group of “nappy-headed hos.” The remarks were a seemingly off-the-cuff reference to the squad, which had just lost the annual NCAA women’s national championship, but Imus’ insensitivity to a group of college athletes who were coming off a remarkable season aroused public ire that seemed to increase with each passing day.

Interestingly (and why I’m writing about it here, of course), it turns out that Imus used to work as a radio host in Sacramento:

Overestimating the underestimate

MSNBC has just published a review of the “Top 10 underrated US cities” for travel destinations. Guess why I bring this up?

Sacramento came in as the number 10 top underrated city – which would mean that it’s the least underrated of the top 10 underrated cities. So, in effect Sacramento is the most overrated of the most underrated cities. So, like, is Sacramento really all that underrated then?

Spinning the lunch

There used to be a lunch time tradition in the early days of the Sac Rag. When we’d need a break from the snark and the hard hitting journalism, we would find ourselves at a loss in choosing where to go for lunch. To solve this problem, we came up with a way to spin a wheel that would give us a random number that would correspond to our own legend of restaurants and eateries to go to. One spin of the wheel would give us a number, and whatever restaurant we assigned to that number ahead of time was our lunch time destination.

Looking back at those days, it’s amazing that we didn’t starve to death.

Welcome to 2007, happy lunch go-ers. Someone has made picking a lunch spot in your neighborhood very easy.

Foreign invasion

The foreigners are coming.  The foreigners are coming.

The Sac Bee reports today that the Sacramento International Airport is finally becoming worthy of its name:

Sacramento International Airport landed its second foreign carrier Tuesday when Air Canada announced it would begin two daily nonstops between the capital and Vancouver, British Columbia, beginning June 15.

Apparently, this is a coup for the airport, who has been courting Air Canada for years to create more links up the Pacific Coast with Vancouver: 

Sacramento County Supervisor Roger Dickinson, who helped lobby Air Canada to start the service, said he expects an enthusiastic response.

“I think there’s a huge interest here in traveling to British Columbia and vice versa,” he said. “That is an area people love to visit. And there are a lot of people up there interested in coming this way.”

Are-eye-gee-ayche-tee aye-double you-enn. Right Awn.

Thought I forgot about this little bit, didn’t ya?

Well, actually, I did.  But late last week, after a tip from sources close to the Sac Rag and the media reports that came out the next day, it seemed appropro to throw up a fist and give a shout out.

Last year, Roseville’s Josephine Kao won the Central Valley Spelling Bee, sending her to the National Championships where she made it to Round 4.  While that was an accomplishment in itself, guess what – she just won the Central Valley Bee again:

The Roseville sixth-grader won the 24th annual Central Valley Spelling Bee on Wednesday for the second consecutive year, cementing her status as the region’s top speller.

On May 30, she will head to the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. She competed there last year and finished 45th.
