Nacheez Release Party

Here are three words you never thought you’d hear: vegan nacho cheese. It’s true. Local artist and, dare I say, Midtown personality Ilsa Hess has developed a totally dairy-free nacho cheese sauce for all of you that love the idea of neon orange cheesy chip sauce but can’t (or prefer not to) handle the lactose. In other words, start stocking up on corn chips my Asian friends!

She’ll be holding a raging release party of both her spicy and mild “Nacheez” on Friday, April 8 from 5–8 p.m. at the Never Felt Better vegan shop at 2315 K St. Free samples to be had for all, so drop by and get cheesy!

Kitchen Nightmares in Sac- Nominate Your Least Favorite Restaurant

Gordon Ramsay is coming to our fair city. The temperamental Scottish chef, known for his pugnacious attitude and glistening, golden-haired barrel-chest will be dropping f-bombs on some of your (least) favorite area restaurants as part of his Fox show Kitchen Nightmares.

This is where you come in. The producers are looking for readers to submit their nominations for the most nightmarish kitchen in town. I’m nominating a few myself — specifically Sweetwater and The Corner — as I think neither of them has a clear culinary vision, tasty food, or skills in the kitchen. And my friends the Crushers saw multiple rodents at Sweetwater. What more do you need?  Continue reading “Kitchen Nightmares in Sac- Nominate Your Least Favorite Restaurant”

La Favorita name change?

Ahora es más machista.

The La Favorita near my home was recently re-christened, and today I noticed that the La Favorita near my workplace has undergone gender reassignment surgery to become El Favorito. They still have the same font on the signs but perhaps that’s just because that font just really says taco. (Can’t think of the font name. Who’s that one commenter who is a typog nerd?)

I haven’t been to either location in a while… does anybody know what is going on? Are they just trying some different names? Did they have to sell off some of those stores?

Opa! Opa! tries to be hipa hipa

Opa! Opa! Coupon Image

Got this coupon in the mail the other day from Opa! Opa! and it made me think, “Et tu, Opa?”

I get that they are trying to be clever, and current, and cute, but the softening of the f-word in our society is really starting to annoy the fuck out of me. I’m just getting over the Cee-Lo song and now Pink, sorry P!nk, drops another kindler, gentler f-bomb song on us. Admittedly, I am a curmudgeon and many of you may tell me to chill the eff out, but it’s tough when you have young ones around the house telling you that they’re not saying the real word so it’s okay.

And I get it, Opa! Opa! disclaims that “OMG” means “OH MY GOSH!” (what, we’re censoring His name now?) and “WTF” is meant to stand for “WOW THOSE FRIES!” and it’s an attention grabber (it grabbed mine, right?).

I don’t know, what do you think? Take it easy, RTOI? Lighten up, it’s only an ad for hummus? Let me know. I gotta run, another car just ran a stop sign on my street and I’m going to call the sheriff.

Sacramento Beer Week

Get your livers tuned up and your walking shoes a-ready, as Sacramento Beer Week is here again! More than 300 beercentric events are listed on the website for your tasting pleasure.

Much like last year, the second annual celebration of Sacramento’s craft beer community will feature tastings, pairings, beer dinners and more at all of our local breweries, alehouses and restaurants on a daily basis. The difference is more venues and some new ideas. The week begins with the Showcase of Sacramento Breweries at Crocker Museum this Thursday and is anchored by the impressive Capital Beerfest at Cal Expo on March 5th. Organizers are even supplying free bus service to help revelers travel safely, a very nice touch. Another new event for this year is the Meet the Masters beer dinner, which features all of the Sacramento-area brewers at The Sterling Hotel.

What Beer Week events are you looking forward to?

Mati’s. Is. Open.

Who says Sacramento’s miserable? Not with great Indian food mere blocks away from my abode.

As of last week, the long anticipated opening of Mati’s Indian Express has come to pass. Her new digs on 16th St between O and P promise to bring hungy naan-loving Midtowners to her door in droves. If you never had a chance to check out Mati’s Natomas storefront, drop by the new Midtown location and sup full of curries and other South Asian delectables. And, seeing as there’s an application to sell alcohol in the works, odds are Kingfisher will be on the menu in a jiffy.

Guy Fieri continues his DDD tour of Sacramento at Gatsby’s Diner.

Guido chop!

Guy Fieri continues this season’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives tour of Sacramento with a stop at Gatsby’s Diner tonight. Earlier this season, he stopped at The Golden Bear and business immediately boomed. A similar effect is expected when his visit to Dad’s Kitchen airs in four weeks.

As usual, the food he featured looked great as chef-owners Chuck Caplener and Jerad Nuttall showed off their local examples of homemade dishes and condiments. Guy tried the beet sliders, smoked pork chops, and German beef rouladen.

Since we know he’ll be back, where else should Guy visit in Sacramento? Am I crazy, or does he almost never feature Asian restaurants?

Popfest this Friday!

Poppy!

Sacramento’s culinary community is banding together this Friday to help out friend in need. If you are a local foodie and have a little cash for a great cause, you won’t want to miss Popfest at the Sterling Hotel. Popfest will benefit Poppy Watson, who was terribly injured in a dog attack last November. She has already undergone two reconstructive surgeries, has several more ahead of her and the bills are already devastating.

This is the part where you go to the Sterling Hotel on Friday for Popfest. You will feast on wonderful food from the all-star lineup of Selland, Mulvaney, Mahan, Ngo, Pechal and Zoellin. You will quench your thirst and cleanse your palate with local creations from Two Rivers Cider, Barryessa Gap Vineyards and my favorite new local winery, Turkovich Family Farms, or cocktails made by bartenders from The Shady Lady and DeVere’s Irish Pub. You will try the incredible new Fortaleza Tequila, which is made using centuries-old artisan techniques. You will hold your head in shocked delight at the prizes you can win in both a live and silent auction.

“Nick on the Town” on new K Street nightlife

Nick on the Town reviews Dive Bar, Pizza Rock and District 30 and gives them his stamp of approval. Well, all of them except for District 30…

which I actually didn’t go into last night because I didn’t feel cool enough. Of course, by “didn’t feel cool enough” I mean I felt sleepy. But, man, they’ve gone through a lot of effort to convince you just how cool the place is. They even hired “world famous hipster DJ Steve Aoki” to play tonight.

Nick would know, so if he goes thumbs up on this then I am almost completely turned around on the issue.

Classy decor at Sandwich Spot

I work out at Mather AFB, and one of the small number of lunch options out that way is Sandwich Spot. Sac-eats reviewed the midtown location when it first opened and had favorable things to say about the experience, and I basically agree with his assessment. Good bread, interesting combos (like my favorite, hot roast beef, pastrami, and salami with pepper jack cheese), and inflated but not egregious prices.

However, what is notable about this location is its laughable “Vegas-themed” decor. A large photo-printed mural of the strip adorns one wall, and the rest of the walls are covered with stenciled words that connote Vegas: Baccarat, jackpot, slots, etc. It is cringe-worthy. And that was before I noticed the door to the restroom… Continue reading “Classy decor at Sandwich Spot”
