Many others, you say?

Two local film series highlighting comics

Ghost World: It’s called America, dude,
learn the rules

Over the next few months, two film series will be highlighting the 4-color world of comic books. First up, on Saturday night (February 21) “Movies On a Big Screen” has Independents: A Guide for the Creative Spirit, a documentary about independent comic artists by filmmaker Chris Brandt. Brandt is “scheduled to appear” to answer questions after the film, and he will be joined by local artists and comics creators Skinner, Ben Schwartz, Paul Allen, Anthony Leano, Stephen R. Buell and Mike Hampton. Most of these guys were written up by the SN&R’s Nick Miller a few months back: I [heart] comics.

And then March and April, the Mondavi Center’s Focus on Film series highlights 3 Oscar-nominated movies based on graphic novels. Continue reading “Two local film series highlighting comics”

Celebrate Punk History Tonight

Dead Kennedys, Rancid, NOFX, and more recently, Green Day: The Northern California punk scene has just as much to celebrate as Seattle or New York. Tonight, you can reminisce with author Jack Boulware of the new punk historical book Gimme Something Better. He speaks at Time Tested Books (1114 21st Street in Midtown) at 7:00 p.m.

The book documents the colorful history of the underground Bay Area punk music scene. According to the author, “outside of New York and London, California’s Bay Area claims the oldest continuous punk-rock scene in the world.” Gimme Somthing Better is the first exclusive look inside the scene from a strictly San Francisco perspective. The San Francisco Chronicle calls the book “…a sweeping oral history likely to remain the definitive tome on the topic.”

Pick up a copy of the book and hear the author speak tonight. And rock on!

An Outbreak of Honesty?

I was catching up on the news today when came across this story about two Safeway stores going unlocked on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Police said when they showed up at 3:30 p.m. Friday they found that people had been taking items and leaving money at the registers.

Sounds like an opportunity to dust off the old Sac Rag “Right Awn” right? Not if you read the comments. Ah, the comments…

“This is why I LOVE ROSEVILLE! We are hard-working, trust-worthy people. You would never read a story like this (the honest people part) happening in Sacramento or most other cities.”

Sac Bee digs up the dirt on Whitman

sacbee-meg-whitman

This voter hasn’t really thought much at all about who he’ll vote for in next year’s gubernatorial race. But I am getting the feeling the Sacramento Bee has a suggestion for me. Check out the related articles in one of the articles up on sacbee.com today.

I can’t believe Meg Whitman is still in this race after being linked to the gas leak explosion that killed a Rancho Cordova man, and either the accidental death of a firefighter or the child abuse committed against that woman’s children.

(Note to any Sac Bee folks: I am not being serious. But you might want to tweak those results, lest Whitman take a break from not voting and sue you.)

KCRA news van burglary highlights growing trend of crime against KCRA

Normally I wouldn’t joke about the break-in of an unmarked KCRA news van earlier this month. But in this otherwise positive report about homicides being down 42% since 2008, KCRA references the burglary of its van to tie the incident to crime trends that “depen[d] on the neighborhood.” Did the crooks actually steal the vehicle, leaving KCRA able only to report on news that happens at KCRA?

I’m kidding, of course. The vehicle break-in happened in Natomas which today’s report points out is experiencing a major increase in vehicle burglaries.

The Big Chill

We have some colder weather coming to our beloved city today and tomorrow. As such, temporary shelter for Sacramento’s homeless will be opened tonight.

I won’t even comment on the comments because I am all about the “Hide comments on sacbee.com” feature. It’s like you get to read about what’s going on in Sacramento and form your own opinions! Imagine.

The article did use my favorite phrase:

Homeless advocates have been scrambling to find emergency housing since funding for the Cal Expo winter shelter was closed because of budget cuts.

In other news, the CIM sold out five and half weeks earlybecause of these hard economic times.

It’s all about how you look at it, right?

At any rate, being homeless has to suck in pleasant conditions. Being homeless when it’s 28 degrees and snowing…
