Fargo’s tax charge bogus

Heather FargoHeather Fargo should be ashamed. Apparently her campaign’s charge, repeated several times, that among the problems Kevin Johnson must answer to is “not paying his taxes” has been all but proven false. Yesterday, “pressed” (not sure by whom) “to support her claim,” Fargo couldn’t provide any evidence of outstanding liens or unpaid taxes either for Johnson personally or for his businesses.

I wonder if she’ll take a closer look at the interview she granted Eyes of Argus yesterday in which she claims “we’re also going to need to look at his record and … look at where he is in terms of, you know, paying his taxes.” And Argus might want to amend his claim Johnson was “hamming it up at the Guild Theater” during the interview to “fighting Fargo’s bogus claims.”

More fuel for the KJ for mayor fire

Newish Natomas-based “The Buzz” found the Bee’s report today that a representative of Kevin Johnson has “pulled papers” for entering the upcoming election for mayor. KJ still has a few weeks to officially enter the race, or should I say to actually create a race, as otherwise Fargo would run unopposed, I believe.

The vote is coming

The Presidential Primary Election is coming to Sacramento on February 5th. In an effort to encourage folks to vote, Regional Transit has been running ads featuring McClatchy High School students…

Sutter’s Fort makes a list!

Sadly, it’s not the list we were hoping for:

From north to south, here are the 48 state parks, beaches, reserves and recreation areas that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is proposing to close to help balance the state budget. The parks would be closed until enough money is available to reopen them. The governor’s office also said some parks could be turned over to local governments to operate.

Well hopefully this will help California get out of this pickle and our kids won’t have to suffer any other cuts…

This is What Lame-Ass Editorials Look Like.

May I turn your attention to the latest anti-war protest coverage from SN&R. This is the kind of thing that makes me feel SN&R is often just a half-step up from a zine I got from some kid at the show my mom didn’t know I went to. Oh wait, it’s 2007 and I’m in my 30’s? Never mind. Anyway it’s kind of a non-story, but the only people who showed up at a recent anti-war protest were old hippies romanticizing the 60’s, and the effect was neither as far out nor as radical as hoped for. Some but not all obvious conclusions include a) lots of people who oppose the war recognize the issue is a lot more complex than a bumpersticker can address or b) lots of people support the U.S. action in Iraq or c) anti-war protest groups need some help in the organizational department.  I’d be interested in hearing a report about these or any other curious aspects of the paltry attendance at an anti-war rally held in state portrayed as being wildly opposed to the war.  Instead SN&R chose the approach of assuming that there exists a massive body of folks who believe violence has suddenly been popping up in the Middle East with no genesis but “U.S. Policy” but we don’t see them at protests because the great spirit of passionate outrage and protesting has been suppressed by evil oil companies and corporate-backed politicians or the Patriot Act or something like that. I’m bored of my own post just thinking about this type of cliched analysis of the political landscape.  The end.

Tower Bridge To Be Changed To “Tower Roadblock” Today

The Tower Bridge is scheduled to be closed to all forms of traffic from 9/17/07 – 11/20/07.  This shutdown will allow a widening of the pedestrian and bicycle sidewalks that, according to the Bee, are like skinny calves on a body builder.  (Let’s all absorb that for a moment)  Alternatives to crossing the river are the Pioneer Bridge and the I Street Bridge.  To stay up-to-date on all things bridge related, click here.  Or, if you have questions about the status of the bridge, please call the Tower Bridge Pedestrian and Bikeway Improvements Project information line at (916) 492-6454.  I’m quite sure that they’d like to hear from you about your not using the bridge for two months.  By the way, this whole issue prompted the following conversation in the office today:

Person 1: Man, they’re closing the bridge for two months?  How am I going to get to West Sac?

Person 2: West Sac?  Where’s that?

Happy Admission Day Weekend

157 years ago, on Sep 9, 1850, California was admitted to the Union as the 31st state.  In order to celebrate this great day, there was a somewhat understated presentation at the Capitol including a barbershop quartet and a color guard.  Maybe it’s just my Calicentric viewpoint, but I think is a day that we should celebrate with a little more oomph.  There should be fireworks and parades and lots and lots of drinking.  In fact, this is a day that we, as Californians, should reflect on the greatness that is our state, and how fortunate the other 49 states are to have us.

I mean, think about it.  California provides 60% of the fresh produce, 35% of the commercial lumber, 68% of the wine, 90% of the movies, 80% of the attractive people, and 100% of the “California Cuisine” in America.  (all of these stats are made up, and therefore, totally true)  We need to celebrate all that is California this weekend.  Fly your Bear Flag in front of your house.  Shout “Eureka” a lot.  And don’t ever forget that you live in the greatest state in the greatest country in the world.

Library maintenance scandal goes deep

If you’re like me, then you’re probably closely following the library maintenance contract scandal, which concerns a contract between the Sac Library and Hagginwood Services Inc to provide buildings maintenance. The library is now investigating $1.3 million in fees paid to Hagginwood after the Bee filed a request to examine the money trail. At the heart of the investigation is several instances of possible overcharging, including “$410 to unplug a toilet, $411 to fix a leaking water fountain and $2,423 for repairing lights in one room” (personally, $410 to unplug a commercial toilet doesn’t sound like a stretch).
