The vote is coming

The Presidential Primary Election is coming to Sacramento on February 5th. In an effort to encourage folks to vote, Regional Transit has been running ads featuring McClatchy High School students…

By the way, are we ready to retire the use of pop culture phrases in advertising? (this post is sponsored by Buick – It’s All Good).

At any rate, visit the County Web site for more details on the election. Not sure if you are registered? Use this handy look up tool.

Netflix has no limits (sort of)

Popular video rental company Netflix apparently is offering its subscribers unlimited access to movies and television shows to watch via the Web on their personal computers (NOTE: This feature is only available to folks using IE 6 or higher!).

The feature will be open to all subscribers already on one of their unlimited monthly video rental plans, with no extra charge.

I currently subscribe to the “2 at-a-time (Unlimited)” plan and am still limited to 14 hours of online viewing. But with instant access to A Fish Called Wanda, Real Genius, and Zoolander, who is complaining?

On a local note, it is always fun to check out what folks are viewing in Sacramento (via Netflix)…

Sutter’s Fort makes a list!

Sadly, it’s not the list we were hoping for:

From north to south, here are the 48 state parks, beaches, reserves and recreation areas that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is proposing to close to help balance the state budget. The parks would be closed until enough money is available to reopen them. The governor’s office also said some parks could be turned over to local governments to operate.

Well hopefully this will help California get out of this pickle and our kids won’t have to suffer any other cuts…

At least he didn’t drive into a house

From News10.net:

A Roseville 12-year-old can consider himself lucky — he’ll only face DUI and hit-and-run charges for his alleged drunken driving spree last weekend that had Rocklin Police relieved things didn’t end much worse…The boy allegedly showed signs of being drunk and was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, hit and run and driving without a driver’s license.

Two notes of interest, however (well, other than a drunk 12 year old driving a car on public streets of course)…

Safety first! or Stickie finds a friend

From KCRA.com:

A man who lost control of his vehicle and was later treated for injuries may have buckled in a pack of beer, but not himself, according to a police report…Officers said Gritsyuk appeared to be unrestrained by a seat belt, but that a 12-pack of beer in his car was secure.

Odds that this guy owns a “Everyone has to believe in something….” bumper sticker?

Another Shins Sacramento connection

I wrote a year ago about the new Shins album and their Sacramento connection — Omnibus records and current Mt. St. Mtn. co-founder Mark Kaiser. Well, that’s probably their coolest Sacramento connection, but as of this weekend it is definitely not their most domestic-abusingest connection. The Kitchen

I’ve sensed a lot of mixed feelings in Sacramento about The Kitchen. Being the most expensive dining choice in the greater Sacramento area, The Kitchen has garnered its share of devotees and detractors. There are those who claim that spending $125 on a meal is never appropriate, no matter what is served, how it’s prepared, or how many “special” massages you are entitled to per course. Then there are those that claim the $125 per person cost at The Kitchen is justified due to the top notch ingredients, top notch service, top notch atmosphere, and top notch notches.

The truth, as with most truths, falls somewhere in between. When The Kitchen is “on,” meaning the food is extraordinary, the “performance cooking” is presented with theatrical flair, and the five hour eat-a-thon flies by in the blink of an eye, the price, to me, is justified. But when the food, while creative and interesting, fails to tickle you in your naughties and lift you out of your chair, it sets the whole evening on tilt and makes you question the steep price tag. Storm Watch ’08

Do we believe the weather prognosticators that these incoming storms will be of Biblical proportions?

I, for one, am not taking chances.

I’m about to go top off my gas tank so I won’t have to stand outside at a gas station at any point in the next few days. I’m also about to go take down the Christmas lights now so they’re not knocked off by Mother Nature and so they’re not up for several more days (I realize some will say we’re OK ’til Epiphany for leaving them up.)

What are your storm plans?

Prediction for 2008: TRAFFIC

Beginning in the spring of 2008, motorists using Interstate 5 through downtown Sacramento can expect traffic controls and congestion while the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) replaces pavement, improves drainage and installs new wells to keep the river water out between L & S Streets.

I would say that keeping river water out is a good thing- Continue reading “Prediction for 2008: TRAFFIC”
