New CAKE video for “Sick of You”

CAKE’s video for the new radio single “Sick of You” showed up on YouTube over the weekend. Here’s what the band says about it:

After years of holding back from using a pair of beautiful rabbit costumes acquired by CAKE long before the Flaming Lips even thought of using their various animal costumes, CAKE has finally decided to use the costumes anyway in their very own home made, self-directed music video! CAKE feels strongly that the rabbit poignantly expresses so much about human hope and frailty that CAKE could no longer restrain themselves. Filmed in one of Sacramento, California’s own richly decorated suburban decay settings, it is CAKE’s sincere hope that our “Sick of You” video and song accurately express the hostile cultural mood currently being enjoyed by so many in the United States today.

You gonna take that, Flaming Lips? Here’s the video. Who can identify the shooting location? Looks like Florin Road to me.

P.S. It got 1000 views in about 15 minutes while I was writing. I think this YouTuby thing is going to take off.

Far at Daytrotter Studios

Another Sacramento band graces the Daytrotter Studio, this time the recently reconstituted ’90s proto-emo band Far, led by Jonah Matranga. From the trippy-dippy (in a good way) intro by Daytrotter’s Sean Moller:

… [T]he band builds itself around very intense and very serious thoughts of when we’re living and when we’re doing something less than living. It could refer to dying, but more often than not, in listening to the words that Matranga pens, we get the feeling that being dead and dying don’t carry all of that permanence. These just happen to be conditions – no less serious – but situations that can be fixed if the winds and minds are right.

My friend and local TV producer J Greenberg is also a rock ‘n’ roll singer, and he is performing Saturday at Luna’s Cafe in a solo show. He opens for Family Bandits.

In addition, I am pleased to announce that J Greenberg will be joining us here at The Sac Rag as a contributor! He should provide a great dose of Midtown flavor and hopefully will be able to report on the music scene. Look for J’s take on our fair city starting soon.

Friday Night Concerts in the Park lineup announced


This won’t stop until one of them changes his name.

Downtown Partnership announced the lineup for their summer concert series at Cesar Chavez Park today. The series is sponsored by a local beer supplier, by which I mean they supply beer to local liquor stores: Budweiser.

Lots of the usual bands, including Kepi, The Secretions, The Brodys, Mike Farrell, and Mumbo Gumbo. Also quite a few that have never played the series before. And as usual, they have done a good job booking similar bands for each night.

Voetbergs play their way into Library fans’ hearts

Two weeks ago I hyped the Voetberg Family Band, an octet of fiddlin’ siblins’ from Washington State. The family’s performance last night at the Tsakopoulos Library Galleria at the Central Library was not to be missed by bluegrass/folk/Celtic/Christian hymnal music fans.

The two elder Voetbergs have professional chops right now (the eldest, Liddy, has released a solo album), but the rest of the group are right behind them — right down to 8 year old Rudy, who is a fiddle champ. Mama Voetberg (I don’t know if they call her that) sang a few beautiful tunes with the kids, and Papa handled the soundboard. The kids played a great set of bluegrass and Christian standards along with some original tunes. The fiddle was heavily represented, but 19-year old Elisha strums the guitar and mandolin and 13-year old Dieter hangs on the side and plucks an electric bass.

Cool family events coming up at Central Library

And chances are, if you give a Pesci a gambling license... (read on, it makes sense)
Several interesting events are coming up at the Central Library downtown:

  • Sunday, March 7: Family Concert with the Camellia Symphony Orchestra. On Sunday the Camellia Symphony Orchestra holds a free concert in the Library Galleria at 2 pm. But the coolest part happens before the concert, when the orchestra will present an “instrument petting zoo” to allow the kiddies to get up close to different instruments. I’m not sure how much actually petting they will allow but there will definitely be a chance to get up close and personal and “see how the instruments are played.”

A new player entered the crowded field of crappy music on the radio dial today as RADIO 94.7 launched at noon on the air and online.

RADIO 94.7 features music from artists like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dave Matthews Band, Coldplay, Green Day, U2, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Sublime, Nirvana, Linkin Park, Weezer and Stone Temple Pilots along with music from new bands like Muse, The Killers, Train, Kings of Leon and many, many others.

Ganglians at Daytrotter Studios

Local band Ganglians have a session up today on Datrotter.com, one of my favorite sources for discovering new bands. The sessions on Daytrotter come with cool artwork (which shows up on your i-Whatever) and a spacey/poetic writeup.

The Ganglians, who rocked last year’s SXSW, have an intriguing and unique garage pop sound. The heavily reverbed vocals and hard, sometimes darker, psychedelic sounds will kick your ears’ ass. The ass of your ears. “Hair,” which I wrote about previously, is an amazing track from their self-titled debut, which is available for purchase…somehow…from Woodsist.
