Deterding Pool brings classic summer fun

Loved Deterding Pool! https://sacrag.com/?p=9332

Deterding Pool waterslide

I’m always complaining about the pool situation in Sac City so I thought it would behoove me to post something positive about public pools in the area. Over the weekend my family brought me to Deterding Pool in the Arden Arcade Community, a place they had been enjoyed the previous week.

Deterding Pool is basically a perfect public pool experience. There are 3 pools — the competition pool with a deep end for diving, but also a kickass waterslide; the “family pool” which goes from 3 feet at each end to 5 feet in the middle; and a wading pool for the kiddies. There is a snack bar with summertime classics like ice cream sandwiches and candy. There is ample shade provided by majestic oaks and the overhang on the pool building. And there is the soundtrack of summer fun, via mix CDs provided by the lifeguards themselves. Though I usually try to avoid today’s hit music, the kids love it, and I have to admit there is something about listening to today’s hits at the pool that is just like being a kid in the 80s and having Journey on constant rotation at the pool. Also I could hear that Florence and the Machine song on constant rotation.

Sacramento inches closer to car theft capital

Over at the new ranSACkedmedia.com, Isaac Gonzalez covers the news that Sacramento is now the #6 city in the country for car theft, up from #11 two years ago.

In Sacramento county over 9,500 cars were stolen in 2010, an average of one every 60 minutes. Amazingly, 8,900 of them were recovered.

That does seem too good to be true!

New reality show features former Aggie athletes

Team "California Girls"

ABC’s upcoming Mark Burnett reality show “EXPEDITION IMPOSSIBLE” features 12 teams in a sort of Fantastic Race across Morocco, and when the show premieres it will count 3 former UC Davis female athletes among the teams vying for the Amazing title.

The beauties from Team California Girls not only carry the burden of being both gorgeous and smart, they also happen to be talented athletes. Christina, Brittany and Natalie met at UC Davis, where they were all recruited to compete for the Aggies. These ladies are always up for adventure and aren’t afraid to get a little dirty.

We all have our burdens. The show, which premieres June 23, will be hosted by Dave Salmoni, otherwise known as that idiot who bangs a stick to taunt wild lions. (The Huffington Post is still a thing?)

Swim season starts today

Swim season at the City’s pools, such as they are, opens today with hours at Doyle and Johnston pools and the Mama Marks and Robertson Park play pools. Clunie, McClatchy, Pannell Meadowview and Sim pools open next week. With only 6 pools open for 4 hours weekdays and a little more on the weekends, I suppose it is the best they could do. The pools that will remain open are basically open every day. It seems like they will be so crowded that you’ll wish you had just let the kids open a hose in the front yard, but what are you gonna do.

This Thursday in Roseville, Mikuni Restaurants will be sponsoring the aptly named “1st Annual Mikuni Japanese Street Festival” at The Fountains lifestyle center to celebrate the opening of its newest location.

“We wanted to do something different in the community to generate awareness of our newest location, Mikuni Kaizen,” said Jeanne Mabry, Vice President of Marketing. “The atmosphere of The Fountains is perfect for an event for all ages to include an evening of Japanese themed entertainment and activities to kick off the summer.”

I suppose if we’re treating The Fountains as a neighborhood, then a restaurant grand opening is the equivalent of a street fair. Oh and by the way Mikuni Kaizen will be open for “normal business hours” during the event and will be open until 9:30 PM.

Takedown is coming!

Surewest warns subscriber not to torrent Game of Thrones

A local pirate warns (via email-he must have 3G on his ship):

So I got a notice from Surewest that they had detected that I downloaded, specifically, Game of Thrones over bit torrent and they advised that they would monitor for copyright infringement and would terminate service for anyone that is caught abusing the service in perpetuating copyright infringement. Just an FYI. I don’t know what makes GoT special as opposed to all the other shows, but just be careful. No more pay channel torrents for me.

The other local angle to this is that Ashwin Navin, a co-founder of BitTorrent Inc., is totally from Sacramento.

Kickstart Colin Hanks’s Tower Records doc

Better days

Sacramento’s own Colin Hanks hopes to produce “All Things Must Pass: The Rise and Fall of Tower Records” and is asking for your help to do it.

From a cultural standpoint, Tower Records had a monumental impact on millions of people, worldwide. It was “the place” to escape for a few hours; a sanctuary, a haven. Tower Records was a place to meet your friends, your co-workers or a place to meet new friends who shared a common love of music, literature and all things cultural.

Yet, in 2004 the company filed for bankruptcy and by the end of 2006, Russ Solomon’s Tower Records had shut the doors to nearly every one of its worldwide outlets.

We are approaching this as a passion project, and as such are dedicated to making this film as cost effective as we can. In other words, we are trying to do this grassroots.

The true cost of an arena

This is my excerpt.

Sprint Center 3-10-07
Sprint Center 3-10-07 by ChrisM70 on Flickr

This week you’re going to hear lots of discussion about arena financing, and piece in the Bee today calls attention to the Sprint Center in Kansas City, which is acting as the new model of an arena plan that worked without costing taxpayers anything.

So you might hear a lot about the Sprint Center this week from various groups, and one thing to take into account is that the touted $200 million price tag for that arena is about far less than half ($470 million what folks thought a new Sacto arena would cost back in 2006 in recommending the failed arena tax. Just keep that in mind throughout the week.

UPDATE: KCRA reports that the cost could actually be closer to $370 million.
