CAKE chart topper is death of music industry?

Good news for Sacramento’s own CAKE band, whose new album “Showroom of Compassion” opened at #1 on the Billboard charts for the week! However, it did so by selling only 44,000 copies, the lowest high sales mark in Billboard history (beating out Taylor Swift). McCrea and co shouldn’t get too comfortable in that spot as you know the record won’t last. But still, that’s great for their “comeback album” to get some interest.

I know that I have not bought a compacted disc since the Clinton administration, but I’m also not sweating it. The only development of the new music industry paradigm that worries me is that bands now have to do almost anything but focus on selling records if they want to make money, which could lead to more selling out. For example, there is no way in hockey sticks that Vampire Weekend didn’t have a discussion of whether J Crew or Old Navy commercials would be better suited for their song “Holiday.” (Or is it much less sinister than that? Does Old Navy just go through the record label to purchase a song for their winter launch?)

P.S., yes, I know I used Cake and death in the title of the post. Wasn’t that like 4 years ago now though?

“Nick on the Town” on new K Street nightlife

Nick on the Town reviews Dive Bar, Pizza Rock and District 30 and gives them his stamp of approval. Well, all of them except for District 30…

which I actually didn’t go into last night because I didn’t feel cool enough. Of course, by “didn’t feel cool enough” I mean I felt sleepy. But, man, they’ve gone through a lot of effort to convince you just how cool the place is. They even hired “world famous hipster DJ Steve Aoki” to play tonight.

Nick would know, so if he goes thumbs up on this then I am almost completely turned around on the issue.

Classy decor at Sandwich Spot

I work out at Mather AFB, and one of the small number of lunch options out that way is Sandwich Spot. Sac-eats reviewed the midtown location when it first opened and had favorable things to say about the experience, and I basically agree with his assessment. Good bread, interesting combos (like my favorite, hot roast beef, pastrami, and salami with pepper jack cheese), and inflated but not egregious prices.

However, what is notable about this location is its laughable “Vegas-themed” decor. A large photo-printed mural of the strip adorns one wall, and the rest of the walls are covered with stenciled words that connote Vegas: Baccarat, jackpot, slots, etc. It is cringe-worthy. And that was before I noticed the door to the restroom… Continue reading “Classy decor at Sandwich Spot”

Maloofs open to “all options” for Kings

Regarding what to do with the Kings, dumping them on Anaheim or Vegas is now an option. I can’t really see Anaheimians attending Kings games, but maybe an underwhelming last place basketball team that is currently showing it can waste even a rookie of the year is just what that area needs. It doesn’t sound like the Maloofs are as secure in Vegas as they once were, so if they move there it won’t be for the same reasons it would have been a few years ago. I also can’t see the NBA going for contraction but it would fit the storyline of the day and age we’re in.

It would probably take at least 2 years to move the franchise to Vegas. At this point the grieving process, once the other shoe drops, will only take about 2 days…

Second thoughts on K Street

I know I had my fun with the Karpaty venues recently, but I was down there today at lunchtime with The Game Guy, and he helped me to see another side of the coin: at least it’s something. When you get a look at K Street from the Crest to the Community Center, you realize that there is a lot going on and a lot already there. Granted, it is almost exclusively for the nightclub set, and it will have a restaurant with a mermaid tank, but when the establishments open there will be a lot going on. Which for downtown is saying very much indeed.

I’m no planning expert, but the K Street I remember had much more for everybody, from nightclubs and nice restaurants to janky shops and the Crest (which is still looking awesome). Maybe a few good months of nightclubbing will help retail around that area, but it seems like even if lots more Four Loko is getting bought in the mini marts, there still won’t be too much to do if you’re not having some ‘za or stepping out with your 30-something lady friends. GG and I had both spent time in LA’s West side so we have Santa Monica’s 3rd Street Promenade to compare to–and K Street probably never be that. But at least it will have something.

Weird structure on Amer. River Parkway (PHOTOS)

I took the family a-walking on the American River Parkway in the Sunrise Blvd/Jim’s Bridge area on Christmas Eve and noticed this weird structure on the north side of the river. It looked like it would be pretty tricky to get there from any of the houses on the cliff. My photos don’t have geotagging but AFAICR it was midway between Sunrise and Jim’s Bridge on the north bank. I’m assuming it is either a duck blind or some sort of ecological outpost? Does anybody know what this would be?

Stuck in a-Lodi again

Spent some time in Lodi over the holidays with a family member who just moved there. My family on my father’s side is from Merced, so the Central Valley always feels very homey to me. We were close to downtown Lodi so on Boxing Day we took a nice walk down to visit the shops, since there was no rain. It seems like a pretty neat little downtown, with some nice local restaurants and lots of quirky shops. Tom’s Used Books in particular could just open up my wallet and take everything I’ve got, plus they have cats. Pictures after the jump.

Train fire this morning!

Zombie commuter 2

You know, most days my bike-light rail-bike commute is uneventful. (Most days.) When I have complained about the variable length of trains being an inconvenience that I have been complaining somewhat, though not completely, facetiously. If anything it is a compliment to RT that as a daily LRT commuter this is my chief frustration. (At least, if we don’t get started on the fact that I keep buying monthly passes and yet I haven’t been asked for proof of fare payment in over a year.)

So today I was actually thrilled to have been slightly inconvenienced by the light rail train fire at the Starfire station. I had to disembark Watt/Manlove and catch a shuttle to my usual stop. RT was able to scramble shuttles to meet us there instantaneously.

Hallelujah panic! UPDATE

RonTopofIt just alerted me to this situation at the Roseville Galleria:

Evacuations were ordered at the Westfield Galleria at Roseville Monday night because a “flash mob” by the Sacramento Choral Society brought an overcrowding concern.

The Galleria has had some scary moments recently so I don’t want to make light of that. But a “flash mob by a chorale society” has me thinking Onion article right off the bat. I’m so glad KCRA was on the scene to capture 54 seconds of video of people standing and walking and a voice on the overhead that you can’t hear.

On the other hand, was this really a “flash mob” at all? I’m open to the fact that it can still be a flash mob if it is a group of people only singing and not a group of people doing the dance from “Teenwolf,” but as far as I can tell it was just open to SCSO members so there was really no mob. Don’t mean to split hairs here.

UPDATE: The Bee’s Ed Fletcher is picking up what I am laying down.
