United State v. City Hall

United State boutique
United State boutique, from Yelp

Via the sac for tourists blog we learn that the City of Sacramento pulled the September Second Saturday permit for United State, a “DJ/Clothing Boutique” in Midtown. According to the United State blog, Sac PD cited “Attract(ing) a younger audience” as the reason for the notice. Sac For Tourists’ Nick Miller (also of SN&R) followed up on the gossip with a roundup of mostly nonevents between Sac PD and hip-hop folks at last weekend’s Second Saturday.

Bill Clinton backs Newsom for Governor

ABC News is reporting that SF mayor Gavin Newsom has won the support of President Bill Clinton in the 2010 governor’s race. I suppose he see Newsom as sort of a younger version of himself. Newsom has apparently not raised as much money as Jerry Brown, but shockingly is beating Brown in the Faceybook friends department.

Notably, the 2010 gubernatorial race creates a reason to use “succeed” and “Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger” in the same sentence, hardy har.

Woodland’s Top Model candidate makes doe eyes at Tyra

Rachel, a native of Woodland, CA, made the cut on the 13th season (I just can’t type “cycle,” I can’t do it!) of “America’s Next Top Model” last night, continuing Norcal’s dominance of the show. (We can also claim blonde-turned brunette Brittany, who hails from from Livermore.) Doe-eyed 19-year old Rachel is one of 13 finalists all under 5′ 7″ ready to claw their way into the industry. Apparently, if you wish to be a model but you are under 67″ tall you may as well also have scaly skin or a prehensile tail.

Radio contest death trial starts today

Jury selection begins today in the trial to determine whether Entercom, the radio giant who owns 107.9 The End (and 98 Rock, and 96.9 The Eagle, and KSSJ, and 106.5, and AM 1320…) is responsible for the death of Jennifer Strange during a radio contest in 2007, which of course I blogged about back then. Since I really haven’t thought about it much since then, I still feel pretty much the same as I did back then: I still maintain that “personal responsibility” doesn’t protect a company asking people to abandon their common sense. I’d rather err on the side of protecting people who should know better than protecting organizations without a discernible conscience.

I also hope as a side effect of this trial that somehow NBC will be forced to stop airing “America’s Got Talent” — hey, I’m no expert, it’s up to the lawyers to figure out how to make that happen.

“Success For Every Student By Name”

Success for this student by name: Melvin Van Nerdlinger
Success for this student by name: Melvin Van Nerdlinger

It’s that time of year again, with schools opening from Rocklin to Dixon, and so I return to one of the biggest educational mysteries of the Sacramento region: the enigma that is Sac City Schools’ motto: “Success For Every Student By Name.” I have blogged about this before, when at the time I thought it was merely the motto for the open enrollment department. But with Sac City’s website undergoing a redesign for the new school year (actually I believe it’s been completely re-engineered, not just redesigned) that motto is right there staring me in the face, daring me to either stand up and challenge its naked lack of sense or sit politely and accept that the Emperor’s new motto is quite beautifully crafted.

Keith Lowell Jensen’s “To The Moon … Live at Luna’s”

Keith Lowell Jensen: To The Moon... Live at Lunas
Keith Lowell Jensen:
To The Moon...Live at Luna's
Some of the best stuff on Keith Lowell Jensen’s debut comedy CD, “To the Moon … Live at Luna’s” comes at the beginning of the record; Jensen turns a throwaway Light Rail Drivers joke into an extended piece about remixing the joke for different audiences, and segues from that into a great series of jokes about performing in small town “comedy clubs,” building to a great bit about parents who bring their kids to bars, with a classic R-rated punchline. In fact, beneath his “alt comic” veneer there are lots of classic comic skills behind KLJ’s act. He does pretty slick segues (except for one groaner, you’ll know it when you hear it) and keeps his bits threaded into the act, such as his comment about the phrase “I’m just saying.” He seems very comfortable mining his personal life for his act, with some raunchy jokes about his wife’s pregnancy and his own childhood and educational experiences at “Success High.” But he seems equally comfortable in lots of other areas like Windows Vista and tech support.

Freilachmakers klezmerize the crowd at Fairy Tale Town

freilachmakersThe family had missed the other Twilight Concert Series shows at Fairy Tale Town, but we were in attendance last night for the final outing in the series, when local klezmer band The Freilachmakers made with the freilach. Although I love to rock and/or roll as much as the next guy (unless the next guy is Gene Simmons), I always come back to the sounds of traditional music, and the Freilachmakers are experts at their craft. I don’t speak Yiddish, but I do believe the band’s claim that it has “defined what may be called ‘the Sacramento sound’ in klezmer and Sephardic Jewish music.” Who is going to dispute that claim? I hear the klezmer kids in Europe go nuts for that swingin’ Sacramento sound.

I’m finally an Art Beast

I finally got a chance to take the whole family to Art Beast yesterday, and I submit for your consideration that Art Beast is the coolest family outing that has ever existed in Sacramento.

Imagine you live in a charming, drafty old Victorian in Midtown. Now imagine you have a second charming, drafty old Victorian in Midtown that you can use exclusively for your kids to play. (I’m not sure how you came to own 2 homes in Midtown. Maybe you had a lot of money invested in gold, or you own the agency that makes “There’s an app for that” ads for Apple. Work with me here.) If you were to dedicate the entire basement to dress up, the whole living area to every kind of art and/or craft known to man, the entire upstairs to dance and other creative movement like tumbling and arm-wrestling, and your backyard to water and sandboxes, you would have something like Art Beast.

City offers class on water conservation

watering at Oki ParkThe City of Sacramento will be offering a class in water conservation to any local resident who wants more info on “how to use water wisely and comply with new watering rules.” As expected, the Sac Bee commenter krew are all over this one.

I should make sure to point out that I do not advocate wasting water. For example I do not support watering the lawns at parks that have reduced maintenance. One wonders whether lesson #1 in the workshop is “have your yard annexed as a City park”…
