Elk Grove essence

The City of Elk Grove is requesting feedback from the general public on a variety of new logos and taglines to go with. I’d put up a sample of what they are considering, but apparently I’d have to get permission first and hell if I do that. You can check out all the different logos and taglines here.

Personally, I think that a picture of an elk standing in front of a grove of big box stores would be the best logo, but hey, that’s just me.

(Note to City of Elk Grove: if you don’t want people to steal your pictures, don’t put them on the internet.)

Friday Night Concerts @ Cesar Chavez lineup

Jackpot
Jackpot the band

Looks like the Friday Night Concert series at Cesar Chavez park started last week with Bright Light Fever, Still Life Projector, The Radio Life, and The Dead Celebrities (that lineup has some top-notch wordplay, kudos to the planners).

Highlights include a June 1 CD release show by An Angle and Spider Silk Dress, and of course the Kai Kln reunion show July 13 (backed by Hot Pistol, one of my new favorite local bands) and an August 3 show by Jackpot (which apparently lost its ownership of the best band URL ever, jackpotswebsite.com, and which also has its own CD release for “Moonbreath” coming up on June 2 and Marilyns). See you in the heat!

(Almost) Nobody’s Perfect!

As one who scientifically deduced the precise number of school days I could miss or otherwise tune out and still get the required grades, may I be so bold as to nominate high school student Jennifer Matre for a big fat SacRag Right Awn?  This morning Matre was honored by the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors for acheiving a perfect attendance record from kindergarten through high school. Can we agree that that is amazing? Way to go Jennifer!

Maybe they are frightened of a fur-maniac?

I snapped this shot of the Raley Field crowd standing at attention for free hot dogs the other night, and then realized it would make a good Cooky Kaption Kontest. Who knows what is lurking up there in the press box. Have at it.

(P.S. I want to make an “I’M A JJ FUR MANIAC” shirt, even if FFT and his brother and me are the only ones who might wear it.)

Tied to the Wiki post

The current issue of the News & Review features Sacwiki.org, the newly launched wiki site from the guys who made Daviswiki.org. This should be a swell resource for useful and questionable information about our fair city.

Other than reading Wikipedia, I have never been a big wiki guy myself, so I don’t know the etiquette… is it typical to create a new page about your “thing” or is that a no-no?

L Wine Lounge & Zocalo

Last night found the Mrs. and me sampling the new L Wine Lounge and Urban Kitchen. We had been invited to an opening event for the joint and thought it an interesting destination for a Sunday night. We arrived at the location (18th and L St. in midtown) around 7pm and gave the place a once over; decorations were sparse but tasteful, very modern and angular (and almost 100% purchased from this catalog ). We were plied with wine immediately and given the broad choice of “white or red.” We went for the red which was an unpresumptuous shiraz/cab blend that followed a little gravelly and finished with a Jeff Gordon-like flare that one usually associates with only the finest clamatoes. (Honestly, the wine was fine, not particularly memorable, but pleasant enough to drink.)

Cakes and Cookies for Cash

Our friend Cakegirl is trying to raise money for the Twilight Walk for Wishes which benefits the Make-A-Wish foundation.  According to her blog, anyone who sponsors her for the walk will be eligible to receive homemade cookies and a cake from one of the best bakers in the Sacramento region.  So go ahead, give to a good cause and maybe get yourself some frosting covered goodness for your effort.  For details, click here.

City Beat, starring SacPD as itself

My wife and I were looking for information about the Sac PD’s bus billboards that show a random trunk search with the text “How much junk is in your trunk?” when we found City Beat, the Sac PD’s video channel. I dare you not to think of those public service announcement videos on “Reno 911!”

There’s actually some fun facts in episode #1 about the history of Sac PD. I would embed one of the videos here for you to watch but I don’t want to mess with the po-po…
