More traffic problems for I-5 corridor in ’08

One of my favorite Bee columns, Back-Seat Driver, reports today on CalTrans’ new plan to shut down lanes and onramps on I-5 in downtown.

Beginning in February or March and lasting through October, Caltrans will close one or two freeway lanes in each direction from Richards Boulevard on the north to the I-5 junction with Highway 50 on the south.

That will leave three lanes open in each direction, Dinger said.

Key ramps, such as the commuter-heavy I and A street connections also will be closed at points during the year

Apparently there are drainage problems there and it leaks, and therefore flood danger in the long run. But holy smokes, that does not sound like a fun 2008 for commuters or people flying on airplanes. Bizjak says this is the busiest strectch of I-5 north of Los Angeles. (Yay Sacramento!) I’m sure RT and the city have some ideas to alleviate the problem though… Continue reading “More traffic problems for I-5 corridor in ’08”

Infant murder makes national news

Sorry for the downer post on your Monday morning, but I think we need to talk about how the most despiccable crime ever happened over the weekend. It is now being reported on by Fox News, so we’re going to be in the national news for the wrong reasons yet again. I think I speak for many when I say I hope anybody who could assist the sheriff in finding these monsters will speak up.

My heart goes out to the family of Sean and his baby, and also to the detectives who are investigating this, who must be in hell right now. The witnesses, who were apparently the victims of a home invasion robbery, are reportedly coming off as sketchy and that is disturbing.

“McClatchy Red” banned at… McClatchy

red Yankee hat
This photo provides an ironic
touchpoint to the article.

The Bee reported yesterday on a new rule at McClatchy High School banning students from wearing the color red. Problem is, the school’s colors are red and white.

Now I am not very educated when it comes to current gang problems, names of gangs, ways to identify bangers, which gangs are the coolest, etc. I’m sure that banning the color red is a great way to go, since I assume gangs usually wear solid color outfits to maximize their display of the gang-affiliated color. For example, gang members who are fans of the Yankees baseball club must have a tough time, since their team colors are blue and white. If their gang color is red, they are screwed. Likewise, a gang member itching to wear red is going to shy away from anything with something else on it like an M or a picture of a lion, right?

Cats continue postseason success

Who’s got River Cats championship fever? I know I do, and the rash is killing me. Hooray for Jorge (call him George) Piedra and AA callup Brant Colamarino, and for the great pitching by Michael Madsen, Jeremy Blevins and Brad Ziegler. Madsen really cut the ears off the Zephyrs hitters for 6 strong innings! (Sorry.)

The Cats are now up 2 games over the Zephyrs in this PCL championship series. Stay tuned to River Chat for all your River Cats blogging needs.

Attention “Reno 911!” fans

Reno 911
Dangle takes down Big Mike

Starting tonight at 2:00 a.m., CW31 will begin airing reruns of “Reno 911!,” the Comedy Central mockumentary-style show about Reno’s bumbling and offensive fictional sheriffs, starting with the show’s pilot episode from 2003. Reruns don’t currently seem to be airing on Comedy Central, so that’s a pretty good deal right there if you’re looking for some fun comedy viewing to tide you over until fall TV starts. Are we “Silicon Valley East”?

Computer programmer
From NASA for Kids’ careers page
on being a computer programmer

From the Computer Science Programming page on Sac City’s website

Sacramento is known as “Silicon Valley East” because of the large number of computer and high-tech companies that have moved to, or established a facility in, the greater Sacramento metropolitan area.

By whom? I don’t mean to disparage our tech sector, but has anybody actually heard that appellation used before? Also wouldn’t East be a bit too specific, considering we are just a few clicks East of San Jose? I think North would be better. Not sure what Redmond, Washington would think about that, though…

CBS13 acts out Minneapolis airport shenanigans

Some can’t miss video this morning from CBS13.com (the show) on CBS13.com (the website): Chris Burrous and Jeff James acting out an – ahem – interaction at the Minneapolis airport that has been in the news recently, featuring a national politician. SFW, but you will want to burn your eyeballs after viewing…

About KCRA’s new prep sports site…

Have y’all seen KCRA promoting “our new site, highschoolplaybook.com”? And have you also seen the commercial on KCRA for highschoolplaybook.com, clearly indicating that our region is just one of the communities featured on the site. (That commercial, by the way, is very confusing … the young gal is interviewing the football star, and then suddenly the sound goes out on them? implying to me that they are falling in wuv, but without that classical music snippet that they play when people are in wuv, you know the one. I assume it was written by Mozart.)

I assumed it was one of those mistakes about computers that old people make, like saying “how can I download the internet.” It made me wonder why they didn’t promote their new video feature a few months back as “our new online video site, YouTube.com”…

However, it took the wind out of my sails when I saw that the site is actually a property of Hearst-Argyle Television. Abort snark!!
