Well here we are, Sacramento, it’s time to get out the vote. Beckler has an entertaining post on Heckasac conjuring Aileen Voisin’s penchant for straw men and the helpful services they provide. If anyone has any enjoyable polling place stories or witnesses anything out of the ordinary (people eating $6000 combo meals outside your polling place, for example) make sure to post them here.

Only in Sacramento…
Last week two very incredible things happened to me, and they both I think have everything to do with life here in Sacto. First of all, we found out that one of my daughter’s preschool classmates lives in the house I grew up in. Her parents actually bought it from my parents about 4 years ago, and now she is one of 24 or so kids in my daughter’s class.
The second one is I think even weirder. Continue reading “Only in Sacramento…”
Halloween wrap-up
We enjoyed some high-returns trick-or-treating last night in Tahoe Park (specifically the region between 11th and Raymond Aves and 58th-60th streets. It was positively hoppin, a great vibe.) Witches seemed to be very popular. As usual, the most popular costume had to be “punky high schooler walking around with a pillowcase full of candy” (and I know that’s not limited to TP…)
When we got home and reviewed the photos we realized that I wore the same outfit as last year, which is funny considering it’s a night specifically about dressing up, even though as I previously stated I do not participate. Read on for the photo comparison…
Hulk sighting
A friend told me about an hour ago that his wife had just spotted Hulk Hogan at a local 24 Hour Fitness, obviously coinciding with his daughter Brooke’s appearance at 107.9 The End’s Halloween party last night. Who among you (okay, among you 25-35 year old males) does not picture him strutting his stuff in the original yellow and red spandex? Ah, nostalgia…
Tricks and/or treats
Despite the fact that I blog here every day under a geeky fake name, CoolDMZ and Mrs Cool do not dress in costume for Halloween (although if I did, it would be BSG related). We’re planning to take the girls (both “nice” witches) in a little loop around the hood and then we’re going to hit the church event and then maybe Boo at the Zoo. I also understand there is an event at IKEA which is a little too weird, although most IKEA product names would make great candy names (“dude you totally scored some EKTHORPE!”) and we got invited to Midtown Safeway (by a clerk who was inviting everyone, but still, partay!!)

New forum for the politically minded
Got an email tip last night about Sacramento Political Forum, a new site providing a sounding board for Sacramento’s diverse opinions. Stop on by and squip to your turty’s content!
Read the arena “Memorandum of Understanding”
The City released the MOU today and KCRA has the document (31 page PDF). I’m not going to read this very closely and as always I’m no expert, but so far I can only find a few things of note…
UPDATE: KCRA has Dave Jones stating that the MOU contains new costs, but I actually disagree on that point; the preliminary term sheet didn’t contain the $45 million for parking, but the July 25 Quality of Life measure did.

Daddy and the girls review: “Dark Metropolis”

Detail from “My World and Yours” (1954). Oil on Trapper Keeper.
This Sunday, I took my 2 daughters to the Crocker because, if you didn’t know this already, it’s free from 10 to 1. We started our visit with a snack on the grounds of the Crocker–crackers and apples in a garden setting, just to the left of the main entrance. It was a fabulous idea.
Then I made the mistake of telling my 3 year old that we probably didn’t need to see the special exhibit “Dark Metropolis: Irving Norman’s Social Surrealism” because it would probably be scary. Well, I might as well have told her that the paintings were made of candy (not because she’s a museum toucher–she’s actually quite restrained, maybe because I fed her first).

KCRA loses anchor Alston
I have learned from a source at KCRA that Friday was John Alston’s last broadcast. You’ll notice he’s already de-listed on their News Team page. Apparently his contract was up for renewal and negotiations broke down. No word on whether Alston was asking for 8,000 parking spots…
Another local reality star
According to the Bee’s Lisa Heyamoto, the next installment of MTV’s “The Real World,” this time set in the mile-high city (wonder how much mileage they’ll get out of punning on that) will star a Sacramentan! As a bonus, he’ll be playing the character of the “uber-conservative who is deeply religious and against gay marriage”! Yippee for Sacramento!
