The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) didn’t pass out this honor lightly. Their mission is to “protect wildlife and wild places and to ensure a healthy environment for all life on earth.†Birds, bees, trees, you, and me—the NRDC is trying to protect us all. Their “Smarter City†ranking drew upon a number of environmentally-friendly criteria, breaking down the results by city size. Sacramento was measured in the “large city†grid along with jolly green giants San Francisco, Seattle, and the like. Â
When I first moved to these fair parts several years ago, one of the things I took note of was the casual attitude where DUI was concerned. People here don’t take drinking and driving very seriously compared to where I’ve lived before. It’s so commonly done and accepted that I’ve seen off duty cops do it (and even a certain coach of your Sacramento Kings). I’ve had difficulty understanding how unconcerned people here are with impaired driving and the risks that come with it.
As I predicted, Nevada City will be involved in the 2010 AMGEN tour. In fact, the prologue to the 2010 race might start in the wonderful foothill town, News10 reports. The prologue would end here in Sacramento which means lots of two-wheeled action for our fair city as well.
In addition the race has been moved to May. The announcement about the race layout will be made official tomorrow, and it looks like it is still uncertain whether Lance will compete since the Tour of Italy also takes place in May.
UPDATE (Thursday 10/22): It’s official, Nevada City will start the 2010 tour. Also official is Lance Armstrong’s participation in the event. Big news for our neighbors up the hill!
Frequent fun guy Radio Matthew emails to point out that 107.9 The End’s new star search contest to find a local singer who’ll open this year’s Jingle Ball concert is sponsored by Vitamin WaterGlaceau. From the press release:
107.9 The End is teaming up with Vitamin Water 10 and the Westfield Galleria at Roseville to host an event to see who will open the show! Sacramento has a ton of talented singers, and we’ll find out who will open the upcoming Jingleball concert!
You can sign up on The End’s Web site to get preauthorized to audition on Sunday, October 25 at noon. I’ll let the peanut gallery suggest other things you might want to think about before you enter a contest with The End 107.9…
Old Soul Co., who run Old Soul and Weatherstone in Midtown, announced on their blog yesterday that they will be opening a coffee shop in the site of the Oak Park Starbucks which closed earlier this year. There will be a party to celebrate the opening on Monday from 11 am – 4 pm. The location is at Broadway and 35th Street.
That location sure didn’t stay vacant for very long even despite the recent economic downturn you may or may have not heard about. This is great news!
Almost nothing is not funny about this Fox 40 story about Arden Fair Mall’s new dress code, which bans baggy pants and hooded sweatshirts.
“That’s retarded,” one shopper told FOX40’s Rowena Shaddox. “I should be able to wear anything I want. I’m a person.”
I’d only really quibble with part of that statement. Though I do agree that the policy has a cognitive disability — it is divorced from reality in a major way. Arden Fair is sticking to their hoodies on this one, though…
Since 2006, a strange worldwide phenomenon has been growing. Once a year, people around the world perform the Thriller dance to benefit charities for kids and to break the World Record for largest simultaneous dance. Some dress like zombies, others might actually be zombies. Last year, more than 4000 dancers in 72 cities in 10 countries broke their own record and are shooting for even more this year. The 2009 Thrill the World has additional poignancy because of MJ’s passing earlier this year and has turned into a “tribute” to MJ’s music and his love of children.
So, Sacramento, are you ready to Thrill the World? Rehearsals are already happening every Monday night, 7:30 PM at the Southside Park Bandshell. There is a local website set up by Event Manager Donna Fultineer, who has designated the Meadowview Family Resource Center as the local charity. Organizers emphasize that the only requirement is a soul for getting down and that people of all ages and physical ability participate. To join in on the fun, check out the website or simply show up on Monday! If you want a head start, there is a tutorial video to help you out.
ABC News is reporting that SF mayor Gavin Newsom has won the support of President Bill Clinton in the 2010 governor’s race. I suppose he see Newsom as sort of a younger version of himself. Newsom has apparently not raised as much money as Jerry Brown, but shockingly is beating Brown in the Faceybook friends department.
Notably, the 2010 gubernatorial race creates a reason to use “succeed” and “Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger” in the same sentence, hardy har.
