It’s not all bad news for Sacramento radio fans… Over the weekend I noticed that Flash 92.1 has undergone a rebirth and is now K-HITS 92.1, Sacramento’s Cool Oldies, filling a gap I had noticed previously. Those of you who are reading this thinking that 92.1 was “Jack” are thinking of “Bob,” which was at 92.1 way back a few months ago before it changed to Flash and then to K-HITS.
Kids: Do not plan to go into the radio industry.

Breaking Story: It has come to the attention of the editorial staff at sacrag.com that the Java City in Loehman’s plaza has closed. That’s right, the perennial hangout for the Armenian, Greek and Russian organized crime lackeys in this town has closed.
How could this happen, you ask? Well, those of us in the gustatory press might say that it was long overdue, since Java City’s coffee tastes like monkey piss mixed with coagulated blood. But, the word from my source across the road at Peet’s is that there were problems with “the lease.”
Nevertheless, this means double the traffic at the Lyon’s center Peet’s, which may make some alterations necessary. On the bright side, my reliable source (Michael) says that the space formerly occupied by JC will now be a branch of the venerable San Francisco institution, Boudin Bakery Cafe. I know, awesome, isn’t it? I’m looking forward to that chowder in a breadbowl–as long as it doesn’t taste like monkey piss.
The Bee’s Sam McManis reports that KCRA has laid off 5 editorial employees (including Mike Bond) in a restructuring move aimed at making room for a new morning news show over at sister station My58TV in late March.
Elliott Troshinsky, president of KCRA and My58TV, said new hires will be made for a My58TV newscast slated from 7 to 9 a.m., but it was necessary to eliminate several positions.
“This new newscast will need a different type of staff than what we currently have,” he said. “So this will free up some positions for the new morning news.”
I hope this “different type” of staff doesn’t include My58’s Street Team duo of Travis & Kelly. You know, the two winners of My58’s “Host Hunt” last year. Frequent Sac Rag readers will recall that CoolDMZ reported on this in September:

Just to catch you up on their goings on lately, here’s Travis & Kelly “hitting up” Capitol Garage and the True Love Coffeehouse. Rest easy, folks, the chin stroke and super toothy grin are still in heavy rotation.
I know that title makes little sense but I’ve been absent from SacRag for a while and I guess I’m a bit rusty. Anyhoo (a phrase I hate), I don’t know whether it’s just that I’ve been living in Sacramento for a while now, or the subliminal pressure of past SacRag posts on the subject, or all the talk of “the environment”, but I’m obsessed with getting a bike. And not the kind of bike that would give people any chance of mistaking me with an athlete either. I’m in the market for a super-vain cruiser that can only get me to Burr’s ice cream and back, people. The obsession is so strong that it’s finally motivated me to have that garage sale I’ve been talking about for months. So it’s coming up. The date and location have been intentionally ommited so as to preserve our hallowed SacRag from becoming a craigslist substitute. I’m not plugging my sale here, I’m wondering: Any good tips out there for pulling off a blow-out garage sale, Sacramento style?
The only redeeming feature of “The Sports Show,” CBS13’s new half-hour sports show featuring Arran Andersen and Gary Gelfand, is that it occasionally features sports footage. While I originally thought this show had premiered in September (based on reporting of its original launch date on 21Q), I managed to completely by chance catch the premiere broadcast on Friday night. (Hat tip to new reader anaughtymouse)
Let me start with the inexcusable logo, which is either a blatant ripoff of The Man Show’s logo, or a cheap reference to that show’s logo (see what I’m talking about in the lower right corner of the screenshot). Either way, seriously, that’s all you’ve got?

According to the Bee today, Thomas Enterprises, Inc., new owner and developer of the railyard, are going to be moving as fast as possible to clean up the toxic areas of that site.
The faster the cleanup, the sooner Thomas will get city approval for development. The sooner the company sells parcels to developers, the faster it can pay off loans and turn a profit.
My mom always loved this approach to cleaning my room. Why on earth would you attempt to portray your handling of a gigantic environmental mess as proceeding as fast as humanly possible? It’s one thing if there are just a few big-box stores going in there, but there are going to be thousands of homes on that site.
The latest rounds of buyouts and departures at the Best Newspaper on Q Street has been all over the news, with R.E. Graswich milking his swan song for all it’s worth on every media outlet that’ll let him talk about his departure.
But the fact is The Bee has been a great place to be from for a long, long time, with a list of folks who’ve gone on to win journalism Pulitzers (including medical reporter Diana Sugg at the Baltimore Sun, photographers Caroline Cole and Michael Williamson, at the L.A. Times and Washington Post, respectively) National Book Award writer Pete Dexter, Letters and Drama Pulitzer winner and Friend of Springsteen Dale Maharidge, Tour de France expert James Raia and many, many more.
On any list of notable Bee alums would have to be Elaine Corn, former Bee food editor, top-selling cookbook writer, teacher and current Capital Public Radio (and NPR) food reporter. Elaine is married to top chef David SooHoo, and together they have run restaurants like the late and still much missed Bamboo in Midtown. Anybody know a good copyright lawyer out there? I can’t tell but I think The Sac Rag’s copyright is being infringed by “ralph myree,” registered owner of “Free Traffic Counter” which as pictured is reprinting an article by sac-eats without attributing it to our site. However, the link for “Original post” does point to our post. Is there a name for this type of site? I assume it is just built to generate Adsense revenue. Maybe I’ll sue Google too, for allowing its service to be used in such a manner!
