Wonks: The Next Generation

Today Sacramento State is hosting a commencement ceremony for this year’s graduates of the Master’s Program in Public Policy and Administration. I finished this program a few years ago and still consider it one of the best investments I’ve ever made.

If you work in the public sector, or in the political or nonprofit arenas, or if you aspire to work in these fields, I’d recommend giving this program a close look. The training I received in this program marvelously strengthened my skillset as a wandering politico and generally opinionated person.

TWF live show @ Colonial Saturday

TWF TV Champion Rob Banks

The folks behind Total Wrestling Federation are basically living the dream. Begun in Tracy in 1998 as a tribute to 1980s WWF awesomeness, TWF is now a full-fledged federation, with colorful characters, themed TV programming and live shows. If you’re into this sort of thing, then you already know about it. The whole aggro wrestling aesthetic is not my cup of tea, but I simply love living in a world where a bunch of kids can dream up TWF and make it into a worldwide phenomenon.

Le SFFF, c’est magnifique!

I’ve been sworn to secrecy…but un peu oiseau whispered a few details in my ear about this year’s Sacramento French Film Festival  — celebrating its tenth anniversary! — and it is shaping up to be quite the event.  It opens on Friday, June 17th and features some fantastic French classics you won’t want to miss.

Whatever plans you might have had for that weekend, or the next, just toss them! The Crest is where you want to be!

Glee coming to Sacramento (soon!)

The hit show Glee comes to Sacramento on Monday, May 23rd at Arc…er…Power Balance Pavilion and we have two tickets to give away. Originally scheduled for Sunday, May 22nd (tickets are still being honored), the concert tour presents the cast of the show performing one hit song after the other.

The live show is presented by Chevrolet, who is also running a trivia contest on Twitter for folks to have another chance at winning free tickets.

So, if you’re interested, use the hash sign #sacragcontest on Twitter and let us know what Sacramento-based band’s song you like to see performed on the show. We’ll pick our favorite and let you know via Direct Message. While you’re at it, give us a follow @thesacrag.

This contest will end at midnight today, Wednesday, May 18th, so get to twittering.

The keys for restaurants to succeed

Help me out, folks. I read this article on kcra.com about downtown Sacramento Restaurants fighting to stay open, you know, because of the economy.

Or is there another reason?

Over the past couple of weeks, several downtown restaurants have shut their doors for different reasons. Table 260, Danielle’s Creperie and Fog Mountain Cafe recently closed….”The economy has really impacted folks, from furlough Fridays to reduction in the work force,” said Downtown Sacramento Partnership executive director Michael Ault. Ault said despite restuarants closing others are opening in their place.

How has it impacted folks outside of them not having enough cash to eat out?

He said the keys for restaurants to succeed are to offer a unquie product, know how to market your resturant and provide good customer service. (that’s a cut and paste, folks, enjoy the typos…)

So, did Table 260, Danielle’s Creperie, and Fog Mountain Cafe close because of the economy, or because they didn’t offer an unique product, or know how to market their restaurant, or provide good customer service?

Police clean up makeshift homeless shelter

Earlier this week, I witnessed law enforcement removing folks who were living under Interstate 5 along the Garden Highway. Since I ride by this area every morning I have been tracking the growth of this tent city wondering how they are created and ultimately removed. They gathered quite a pile of belongings and trash which was gone the next day.

Then this morning I read this article about police returning to Discovery Park in wake of rape and I wonder if there is a connection.

The woman was at the park for a company barbeque when she was attacked about 8 p.m. Wednesday. She walked into the restroom at the park near the Garden Highway and Truxel Road when she was grabbed and sexually attacked, police said.

Anyone know how makeshift homeless shelters are allowed/removed? Makes you wonder where the folks end up once they are pushed out of an area like this.

Band Tesla ft. Nick Toma

So what’s up with Band Tesla threatening to cancel their appearance at the Kings rally because of Don Geronimo? and Where is Nick Toma from Good Day Sacramento?

Don said he was broadcasting his show live from the Kings rally at Cesar Chavez Park in Sacramento when local band Tesla, who was scheduled to perform at the rally, was on stage getting ready. Don, who’s known for his crude and often biting humor, saw the band from across the park and commented on air that Brian Wheat, Tesla’s bassist, who has long hair and was wearing a Chicago Blackhawks jersey, looked like Garth from Wayne’s World.

How crude…and biting.

And now Nick Toma goes missing and has two, count them two, Facebook pages created in his honor?

i asked this on their page and they deleted it. there is something going on. they said he was on vacation and then off and then he was just gone. with a generic post as to “he is no longer with the company and is pursuing other options” yada yada yada i have not watched their show since that day…

I say Don is behind this what with his new three-year deal at KHTK and job as program director and all, not to mention his addition to the Good Day Sacramento lineup.

Next thing you know, Don will be opening restaurants with Mark S. Allen.

Shady Lady on Hiatus

Prohibition Strikes Back!

Maybe the R strip’s most beloved watering hole, the Shady Lady Saloon, will be closed until May 19. Apparently a technical slip up in Shady’s reporting to Alcoholic Beverage Control landed the bar a 10-day suspension of its alcohol license.

Shady Lady is a fantastic bar. The decor drips 1920s speakeasy. The front patio has lots of streetside seating. There’s often a live band playing. And I’m told they make their own tonic (though I’m not really a gin and tonic drinker) and it’s excellent.
