“Man sought after making Virginia Tech-type threats”

Sutter County officials are looking for Jeffery Thomas Carney (oh really, they used his middle name?) because he has reportedly been telling acquaintances that he is planning a shooting rampage that will “make Virginia Tech ‘look mild.'”

This is really scary. I hope they find the guy. If only there were some way to remove the fame aspect from the minds of these psychos. For example, you might be able to prevent that by not rushing out to print whatever deranged rantings they send you, NBC.

My mind is reeling that at no point was there anybody in whatever team put that crap on the air who had the good taste and/or an ounce of brains to put a halt to it. I hope the parents of the victims sue the crap out of NBC.

Survey Says…

You Peet’s regulars have surely noticed the sweet lady asking folks to fill out a survey while waiting in line at the Lyon Village location. She is offering a free cup of joe just for filling out the two page survey which mostly deals with demographics and coffee drinking patterns.

So, first and foremost, we love us a free anything here at the Sac Rag so head on down to Peet’s and hop in line.

Now, back to my point. Today I struck up a conversation with the gal. We discussed the Lyon Village location as well as the others in the area. Of course, this lead to our thoughts about a redesign. I freaked her out I am sure with my overly thought out plans for renovation as well as my opinion on the confusion that occurs from time to time when the coffee bean counter doubles as a coffee line which then forces the patrons to create a feeder line on the fly. This doesn’t always work out so well when everyone is not on board with the idea. She humored me and provided feedback. She also mentioned that some folks had suggested a line be created for just drip coffee orders and one for specialty drinks. If you are reading this survey lady, I apologize for my enthusiasm and references to sketches and blueprints I have available upon request.

My assumption is this has to do with the pending remodel first discussed on this here web log last month. You insiders care to chime in?

Recommended: Bonney Plumbing

It’s probably hard to live in Sacramento and not have heard of Bonney Plumbing, but there is simply no reason to call any other plumber. Today was the second time we’ve had to have Bonney out to the house, but only the first time we’ve had to pay…the first time, their man talked us out of paying him to do his work, and gave us some DIY tips instead. That’s insane. Their phone customer service is great — in the old school style — they are always on time and professional, and there is no catch to their “charge by the job” pricing structure. And as RonTopofIt reminded me, you gotta love the 70s glam shot of the owners.

But the question remains: Who will you vote for in their character contest? I was always partial to Larry Lethargic, the stoner one…

Rumble in The Jungle

It’s on like donkey kong!

Jim Rome, the nationally syndicated sports radio host – and sports radio icon – of “The Jim Rome Show” (heard daily on KHTK 1140AM from 9 AM to 12 PM) is holding his “Smack Off” on Friday, May 4, 2007.

What is the Smack Off? According to Wikipedia:

The Smack-Off is an annual competition on The Jim Rome Show, held in mid-to-late spring and which takes up the entire program on a Friday. The contest is a way to recognize the best callers to the show, as well as a means of determining the best caller of the year. Show host Jim Rome has referred to the Smack-Off as the most important show of the entire year.

Ain’t your caller-back girl

In the true spirit of the Sac Rag RIGHT AWN!, I’d like to bring to your attention (thanks for the tip, RonTopofIt) to one Sacramento resident by the name of Andre Lamme:

Telemarketers ignoring the “do not call” registry should think twice before calling Andre Lamme’s house in Sacramento.

Fed up with repeated calls from stubborn telemarketers, Lamme resorted to a little-known federal law allowing consumers to sue violators in small claims court.

Despite getting my phone numbers on the national do-not-call registry, I’m still getting calls from telemarketers, and I’ve gotten tired of warning these interruptors to my dinner that it’s illegal for them to call me.

Eve’s Market- The Grocer That Saved Carmichael?

For the last several months, the grocery/retail space formerly occupied by Ralph’s on Marconi and Walnut has sat empty.  While not exactly a blot on the landscape, the vacancy has been inconvenient to the folks in the neighborhood.  Like a missing back tooth, the emptiness of the space was not readily visible, but it was a big pain in the ass when you wanted to eat.  Why, you say?  Good question.  It is because of the location, I say.  The corner of Marconi and Walnut is, simply put, a perfect place for a grocery store.  The nearest stores are just too far away, too sketchy or too small.  For example, we’ve already expressed our displeasure  at the Raley’s at Watt & Marconi, and I’ve never spoken to anyone who has shopped at Mike’s Discount Grocery and Sketchy Food Emporium on El Camino and Mission that hasn’t felt like taking a shower afterwards.  Which brings me to the new, fabulous, Eve’s Market.

Calling all Sacramento historians

Ok, folks, I’m looking for help settling a bet between a couple of buddies. Years ago there was a Baskin-Robbins ice cream store located at Watt & Fair Oaks next to the Casablanca restaurant. I’m looking for an approximate year that the store closed to become one of many cell phone retailers.

In similar news, I had to let go of my memory that there once was a Leatherby’s in Loehmann’s Plaza where Giovanni’s pizza no resides.

As you were.

RT Rider Poll: Which seat do you take?

When I got on the bus the other day I realized that unlike on an airplane, where you have solid reasons for preferring an aisle or window seat, on a bus your choice of seat is much more instinctual. You choose window or aisle without really thinking about it. I suppose maybe an aisle seat is more likely to deter seat sharing, but I really think the choice is more deep-seated than that. Also I wanted to test out this polling plugin. So read on and take the poll if you will…
