The RT service cuts announced last night will hurt pretty bad. On a personal note, this rider loses 3 of his regular routes including the beloved (for some reason) 50E. Apparently the cuts were not as bad as expected, though since money doesn’t grow on trees, one doesn’t relish the sound of the other shoe dropping someday on the “last-minute agreement between the governor and Democratic legislators” that freed up an additional $12 million for RT.

Friday Night Concerts in the Park lineup announced
Downtown Partnership announced the lineup for their summer concert series at Cesar Chavez Park today. The series is sponsored by a local beer supplier, by which I mean they supply beer to local liquor stores: Budweiser.
Lots of the usual bands, including Kepi, The Secretions, The Brodys, Mike Farrell, and Mumbo Gumbo. Also quite a few that have never played the series before. And as usual, they have done a good job booking similar bands for each night.

Discount lift tickets for late season skiing
On the office bulletin board I noticed a flyer for the Sierra Avalanche Center, a non-profit resource providing avalanche advisories for the Tahoe area. Since they are sponsored by local ski resorts, they have some pretty killer deals on lift tickets for the next few weeks. If you’re looking for some late-season skiing this might be worth checking out.

K Street proposals offered tonight
If this was a comic book, I would read it
Separate articles on LivingInUrbanSac and by William Burg on Sacramento Press highlight the proposals being submitted tonight to the City Council for the 700 and 800 block of K Street. An ambitious face lift is being proposed by 4 different groups.
This is an area that I am interested in enough to read up on the proposals. I have always loved the K Street Mall and I would love to simply see it back to what I remember, much less something along the lines of these proposals. I suppose my vision would be closest to Proposal 3 by D&S Development and CFY Development; this proposal aims to “preserve the historic fabric” of the block by retaining the existing facades. Proposal 2 by David Taylor/CIM Group/Domus Development/Zeiden Properties, which is probably the most likely to be chosen, also looks like the most boring. Thing. Of all time.

Voetbergs play their way into Library fans’ hearts
Two weeks ago I hyped the Voetberg Family Band, an octet of fiddlin’ siblins’ from Washington State. The family’s performance last night at the Tsakopoulos Library Galleria at the Central Library was not to be missed by bluegrass/folk/Celtic/Christian hymnal music fans.
The two elder Voetbergs have professional chops right now (the eldest, Liddy, has released a solo album), but the rest of the group are right behind them — right down to 8 year old Rudy, who is a fiddle champ. Mama Voetberg (I don’t know if they call her that) sang a few beautiful tunes with the kids, and Papa handled the soundboard. The kids played a great set of bluegrass and Christian standards along with some original tunes. The fiddle was heavily represented, but 19-year old Elisha strums the guitar and mandolin and 13-year old Dieter hangs on the side and plucks an electric bass.

CoolDMZ vs. the Laker Nation
My dad treated me to a viewing of Tuesday night’s Sacramento NBA Kings contest versus another basketball team from Los Angeles. In case you missed my Twitter tweets from the Arco stands, the most notable topic was the fact that the Laker Nation was out in force. I suppose this should not be surprising, but that didn’t stop it from being strange and demoralizing. If anything it made for a schizophenic crowd: loud boos for Kobe when he lines up for a free throw, then equally loud cheers when he sinks it (on those rare occasions when he was able to make one). The Kings played great for most of the game, they were in it until the end. Rare defensive lapses–though the Lakers create serious matchup problems for almost everybody–but also some amazing D from the Kings.

New look, features for SacMix.com
Local happy hour website SacMix.com launched an updated look today with some new features. This week marked the official launch for the site, which aims to be the “Craigslist of Food and Drink” for the Sacramento region.
In addition to tweaking the design, SacMix.com founder Tim White has added hundreds of new listings in outlying areas from Davis to Rocklin, and added additional sorting on the food and drink specials. Other updates will be coming soon, including improved navigation and more specific content on the locations and deals. It’s a great site for quick listings of all the hot spots, and it’s now extremely useful for those off the grid. Cheers!
Conan O’Brien to appear in Sacramento
Conan O’Brien’s nationwide stage tour, the “Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour” (ha) will be making a stop right here in Sacramento on May 6, according to the just-released tour dates.
The show will take place at the Memorial Auditorium. Let’s show Team Coco how wonderful Sacramento can be! Tickets can be purchased here.
Election deadlines coming Friday
The deadline to register as a candidate for the District 1, 3, 5 and 7 City Council offices is Friday, March 12. As of today there will be quite a field, with 17 candidates running, including 5 candidates in Districts 3 and 5. The deadline for District 5 is actually March 17, since the incumbent Lauren Hammond won’t be running (she’s a candidate in the sure-to-be-exciting 9th Assembly district race). March 12 is also the Secretary Of State’s deadline to register for statewide office.
I’m planning take a look at the candidates for the 5th district (my district) in more detail in the next few weeks, in a humorous but fair and balanced manner. So, you know, stay tuned for that.
Cool family events coming up at Central Library
- Sunday, March 7: Family Concert with the Camellia Symphony Orchestra. On Sunday the Camellia Symphony Orchestra holds a free concert in the Library Galleria at 2 pm. But the coolest part happens before the concert, when the orchestra will present an “instrument petting zoo” to allow the kiddies to get up close to different instruments. I’m not sure how much actually petting they will allow but there will definitely be a chance to get up close and personal and “see how the instruments are played.”
